NFT: Yankees vs. Royals; Yanks up 5-2, Top 5

Dave in Hoboken : 5/19/2018 8:38 pm
Ok, got to watch up until Hicks hit his 2nd inside the park HR of the year, then had to step out unfortunately up until now. So, not sure how we got to 5-2. If someone feels like posting it in here, go for it. 5-2 Yanks right now, top 5.

Nice play by Torres.

Gray is obviously the biggest note of the game
UConn4523 : 5/20/2018 4:23 pm : link
but Hicks coming through the past couple of games is important. If he can just hover around .250 with his defense I don’t see how he’s replaceable.

Up to about .790 OPS. The Yanks will take that with his D/base running/patience any day of the week.
What an outing from Gray.

Bird also doesn't have much of a platoon split while Austin's is huge. A right-handed hitting platoon 1b/DH is a guy who doesn't give you much roster flexibility.

I looked up the splits for Bird. .168 vs RH and .286 vs left last year..now he doesn't have much in the way of ABs.

What am I missing?

Romine still isn t good

I don't complain about him starting because Sanchez isnt going to start 150 behind the plate, but I would like a better backup catcher.
30-13

If Bird ever gets healthy and can stay healthy, he'll be starting at 1st base.

Austin is streaky, but has never had consistent playing time. But you dismiss him far to easily out of hand. He is starting to look like a legitimate starting MLB first baseman.

And isn't that a good thing? They have options, even with Walker.
21-4 in their last 25 games.

romine is a QUALITY backup catcher...

i dont mind him giving gary a rest here and there. its the royals...gary can take a breather. the yanks have so much offense its borderline unfair.

if they add a top end of the rotation guy they will be VERY tough beat come playoff time.

especially when didi gets back and heats up and stanton gets really going.
That's win #30 on the year.

It’s going to be a travesty if either the Yankees or Red Sox have to play a one game playoff.

Doesn't seem to be an alternative, does there. I doubt either team falls apart.
It’s going to be interesting
BigBlueShock : 5/20/2018 6:05 pm : link
Austin mashes lefties and with Boston having so many lefties in the rotation, he HAS to be on this team. He took Sale deep last year too. He is an equalizer against lefties and they need him in those games. I’m not sure what the heck they are going to do but man, I want Austin in the lineup against tough lefties

Romine would play every day
Bgaff : 5/20/2018 7:21 pm : link
for the Sox. The Yanks are uniquely positioned to give more days off with the depth of their bench. Good problem to have.

His two walks yesterday showed a lot

Next time he comes up I don't see him walking for a while ... sad

play 3b?

If so I think Andujar will go down. Keep Austin up and against lefties go with this lineup.

Hicks CF
Judge RF
Didi SS
Stanton LF
Sanchez C
Bird 1b
Austin DH
Walker 3b
Torres 2b

They're not going to let Torreyes go because he does keep hitting but I wouldnt hate it if they let him go and brought Drury back in his place and Bird in Andujars place. Walker could play 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, Drury could play some outfield in a pinch and 2nd/3rd, Torres could play 2b, SS, and 3b. Austin back up at 1st for bird.

I have no idea if this guy is actually a good comedian or not, but if those 42 seconds are anything like his stand up, he would be the worst comedian on the planet. There was nothing even remotely funny in that video. Painful.

In about 1,100 MLB games Walker has played 20 at 3b.

I don't think he's in the running for 3b with the Yanks. Andujar, Drury and even Gleyber are ahead of him there.
When Bird comes back later this week,
Dave in Hoboken : 5/20/2018 11:20 pm : link
it's going to be interesting to see what they do. It's a good problem to have, but they have too many major league ready players right now with Bird, Austin, Drury, and Andujar; all in the in-field, too. Then, you got Frazier, too. As far as baseball goes, it's 'first world problems,' but still will be interesting to see what they do.

I whole heartedly disagree about Gleyber ahead of Walker for 3B

While Gleyber is a great 3B defensively, he is a phenom at 2B and he is not moving. If Gleyber Torres ever plays another position besides 2B from now on I'd be surprised.

Andujar , Drury, Torreyes , Walker is the 3B depth chart.

I believe Walker actually might have played a couple of innings at 3B this season at 3B if I'm not mistaken . His defense at 3B is probly well below average but in a pinch I'm sure Walker could fill in at 3B if it was ever needed
I mean, Walker's a 2B so he should be able to handle 3B
Greg from LI : 5/21/2018 9:10 am : link
But I have no idea if he has enough arm for the position
Walker has played 3rd in his pre-NYY life.
Victor in CT : 5/21/2018 9:59 am : link
I looked up on BB Reference com he played about 25 games there.

I think Austin loses out because with only 3 bench players (one of whom is Romine), verstility is at a premium. And he's a switch hitter to boot.

I really wish they would go 12 pitchers and caryy an extra bench player.
