Really took a chance on Christian Peter as well as Kerry Collins. They put both of them in a program and really made sure they followed through with it. Kerry and Christian straightened out their lives and rebuilt their careers.
It's good to see Christian is still giving back and helping where he can
I hope he continues down this path because if he doesn't his demons will come back. He knows this better than anyone. I'll place my money on Christian Peter beating those demons down. Happy to see him doing well.
but I legitimately wonder if a signing like that could happen today and withstand the backlash that would arise.
I think a lot of team's would be wary of bringing in a player with that kind of reputation because of the personal conduct policy. A team will do it though. We saw the eagles do it with Vick (and they got a lot of backlash), the cowboys with Greg hardy and the list goes on and on.
He was a pretty big a hole in high school and nobody was shocked at the Nebraska problems. There ar3 still demons in there, but hopefully he is on the road to recovery.

Speaking from experience, those demons NEVER go away. It takes daily, sometimes hourly work to keep them at bay.

Look what’s going on with Luke Heimlich, the Oregon St pitcher . Over 3/4 of MLB teams have already said that they will not go near him. I think it’s the Doc on this site that takes the no-second-chances hardline position . The thing is, if you felt that way, then they should have put a bullet in Heimlich’s head when he was fifteen . You have taken his life away. Have the courage to follow through on your conviction .
Wellington Mara made the decision to sign Peter. He knew Peter’s parents, who owned a restaurant in Middletown , a joint that he frequented . Mara convinced the Giants’ psychiatrist to issue an evaluation that stated that Peter’s primary problem was alcoholism and that as long as he didn’t drink, he would not be a sexual predator .
People reason, and understandably, that some crimes are different Â
Maybe a sex offender deserves a second chance, but maybe he doesn't deserve it as the face of an entertainment corporation that is heavily reliant on public approbation. I don't think that's incoherent, and for a fringe roster player like Peter or a guy who is maybe a 25-40% chance of even making the bigs why take the risk of reoffense on your watch?
this is the last thing I want - an article reliving his past.
Bringing those sexual assault incidents back to the surface in this day and age will not go unchallenged. This could seriously hurt his current business and employment.

Perhaps he wants to use his past for good. Maybe he wants to inspire people who've made mistakes and want to change. To me it shows he's not only concerned about himself, but helping others.
He tried to help me out when I graduated from College. I almost went to work for him, actually at first he had this idea that I would be living in his brothers basement in Lincoln, working for Jason at ESPN.
He doesn't shy away from his past because he is dedicated to not repeating it, and trying to better himself and the community every single day.
If you ever get the chance to speak to him in public, I highly suggest it. You'll see for yourself first hand.

The fact that today's atmosphere is less tolerant has nothing to do with politics.
Yeah ok.
Absolutely snowflake, this has to do with visibility, not politics. Just like LT would never have gotten away with half the shit he did back in the day, simply because he wouldn't be able to hide it as well.
20 years ago, the Giants pick up a guy with Peter's background and you're lucky if it's covered in the Daily News or mentioned in passing on ESPN. Now, thanks to social media, it's all over the nation in a few minutes. That's not political, that's societal change.
after all that's why he was available for the Giants to sign. The Pats had to ditch him soon after the draft. Today a team wouldn't touch him. Nor should they. There were multiple allegations and some were recent cases. It wasn't like he had one incident and then had been a good citizen for a couple of years. It wasn't a second chance type deal as much as paying no price at all. I'm not sure he even got suspended by Osborne. He certainly didn't get kicked out. And then he went right to the Giants.

Collins yeah. Peter no.
