Its a quiet Sunday, so here is a Giants related 2 part trivia question.
The year is 2012 and the college team is the Miami Hurricanes.
Who started 12 games that season at left tackle?
Who played in 12 games that same season at right tackle (and starting 4 of them)
Remember-this is Giants trivia---- and.........
GO !!!!!
Have not seen it mentioned on BBI, but Ereck Flowers and Malcolm Bunche were teammates at Miami.
In 2012, Bunche was a Junior and Flowers a Freshman.
In 2013, Bunche would play his senior season at Miami, as well as graduate.
In 2014, as a graduate student, he transferred to UCLA because he had one year of football eligibility remaining.
So Bunche and Flowers are former Miami teammates and current Giants teammates.
Y28, you've been on fire this off-season.
Last week at the tryout, the Giants invited slot receiver James Clark of Virginia Tech to attend. Clark was not ultimately signed, but as I mentioned here last week, Clark and Apple were college best friends when they both played for Ohio State.
Clearly the Giants need a roster made up of the best players, and Clark didn't impress enough to earn a spot. But perhaps is was a subtle sign to Eli Apple, that the new management team wants Apple to feel welcome.
It's no secret that Flowers didn't spend much time with the other Giants O-linemen outside of football. Bunche is going to have to prove himself, but it can't hurt to have Bunche on the field and in the same meeting rooms with Flowers right now.
It could be subtle, or purely a coincidence, but worth a mention.
There is no question that bailing on two of Reese's last three (quite high) 1st Round picks would be a terrible waste of resources and cap, perhaps even confirmation that GM and HC see talent to support overall roster strength at key positions.
I'm certain that many here have a better sense than I as to the lousy chemistry and dynamics that drove EF and Apple so far off the reservation. How did the locker room become so toxic? And as important, are all the influences that contributed to that negative dynamic gone? That may be an open question.
I loved that Shurmur shut down Collins....the press are not their friends....they love stirring shit up. They do it with OBJ.....they jumped on the potential contract/ holdout. They pushed the Collins/Apple narrative....and was ready to jump on the Collins/Flower....these guys (Shurmur and DG) know how to defuse and move forward....love it.
"I'm just happy to be here, hope I can help the ball club."
Etc.
In his sophomore season,(2013) Flowers battled Bunche for the starting left tackle job.
Flowers won, and Bunche had a limited role in his final year in Miami. Bunche was actually moved to guard that season.
