NFT: What's your favorite brand of coffee?

Ira : 5/21/2018 9:06 am
Mine is Cafe Altura. I've used it both with an espresso machine and an aeropress. I've also used their freeze dried coffee when I was in a hurry. It comes in whole bean, ground, with or without caffeine and in different roasts. I get it on amazon. Most or all of their offerings are organic. But the bottom line is the taste which is excellent. It costs a little more, but it's worth every penny.

I started this thread for me and for all of us to learn from each other about brands of coffee that we might not be familiar with. So, if you have a brand that you think others will like, please share your experience.

but I go to a small local roaster here in NJ. I've posted about these guys before, last week as a matter of fact, Jersey Shore Coffee Roasters. There have been a ton of roasters opening up over the past few years, but they were one of the first in this area, probably 15 years or so. Small batch roasters, everything is fresh, and I know they ship. Some of the Beans/Blends I enjoy are the Sumatra, Bali Blue Moon, and their Tres Guatemala.

And I like it.

you can grind your own beans there if that matters to you. But it's a pain in the ass to go there for me just for coffee whn we can get Lavazza at Shop Rite and they run good specials on it often enough that we never have to pay full price.
I also like Westrock's Rwanda Select Reserve

Every now and then Kroger has it on sale dirt cheap. I snap up several bags of it when that happens.

I went to a place in Greenport called Aldos Coffee. Apparently its a destination out north/east and now i know why. Aldo is an old school grey haired artisan. Small batch roasted on site .Best cup of coffee Ive had in half a century.
Depends
jcn56 : 5/21/2018 10:31 am : link
For iced coffee, I tend to prefer a cold brew using a mix of Dunkin and Lavazza beans off Amazon. For espresso, Fairway here in NYC makes a great espresso blend, for when I'm not lazy and make the espresso instead of just caving and using the Nespresso machine.

Hot coffee, in the morning I'd rather take the lighter blends, city roasts like DD, while I'll go for something mroe roasted/heavier in the afternoon.

That guy's a character, but the main reason to go in there is their scones, although the smell of their coffee beans roasting is always a great greeting. I've bought beans from him and had less than optimal results at home, though.

I overload the coffeemaker by 2 scoops - 10 cup pot, use 12. Strong, round flavor.

Hate Starbucks. Burned beans ain't for me!

Can't stand the bitter taste of some coffee. Folgers is medium balanced with the slight nutty taste from the hazlenut and suits my daily dose at breakfast.

Makes me wonder though. Can you still get instant coffee? Hard to believe maybe for younger people but when I was just starting to drink coffee (late 60s) there were a lot of people who actually drank instant all the time. Nasty stuff if you drank it black but not so bad with cream and sugar.

Thats now my house Blend. Go ahead and Laugh!

Lots of great local roasters out there, but the Aldi 12 0z is selling for less than $5 a bag.... it compares to Peets and Starbucks at about half the price.

I like to mix it up, and I love finding "Locals"...but the 6 am cup is The Barissomo Honduran is the "House Cup"--- and the San Pablo Estate Peru is also a nice option.

It comes with my double money back guarantee.

BJs Colombian or Costa Rican. And all three are cheap, about $13 for a 40/42 oz bag.

Somebody mention Jamaican Blue Mountain. I used to get it right in Kingston to bring home - directly from the distributor. It was always to weak for me, but people liked it as gifts...

It's actually pretty popular in Europe, especially in offices. There have been a lot of advancements in freeze-drying and I was shocked at how good the quality has gotten.

I used to work with a contract manufacturer who specialized in freeze-drying. They are the ones who do the majority of the freeze-drying for the fruit in cereal, but their biggest business is freeze-drying coffee. Every meeting, we had the freeze-dried coffee. Actually was better than most regular coffee.

In the US, freeze-dried coffee share is far less than it was in the 70's, but it has rebounded a bit with starbucks Via and other specialty items.

LOL - yep, Nescafe is the rage in Europe. Done a couple Viking cruises and their machines use Nescafe and it is ridiculously good.
The Suez Canal pilots asked if we could spare a jar or two, but we did not carry it.

About 10 years ago I took a trip to Bolivia. They are a relatively poor country with poor soil, but one thing they can grow is coffee beans. And, all the restaurants serve Nescafe. I couldn't believe that I had to suffer with instant coffee in a country that's known for growing coffee beans.

Years now but it's getting a little light for me. About to try something called chestbrew Vietnamese coffee since I can get it on subscribe and save (I'm in the get it on sale camp). Kicking horse coffee isn't bad either. Used to buy counter culture from fresh market but their beans got outrageously expensive.

I’ll second La Colombe. I’ve been drinking it for the last 5 years and there are 2 locations within walking distance of my office in Philly. Their in store beans are a tad pricey, but their selection is great and obviously the coffee is great. Once you have something like La Colombe regularly, a place like Starbucks is a noticeable distant second.

Yes! Their rum was pretty good, too.

Their croissants are also the best I’ve had on the East Coast.
