Grid Giants Greeted By Storm In Vermont Winoosti, Vt. (AP) -- “The New York Giants' professional football squad opened its 1956 training camp at Si. Michael's College yesterday and was greeted by a thunderstorm that drenched the practice fields and precluded a acheduled morning workout. There were 31 rookies in the group of 37 players. Three veteran quarterbacks, Charley Conerly, Bobby Clatterbuck and Don Heinrich, joined the first year men, along with halfbacks Frank Gifford and Kyle Rote, and tackle Roosevelt Grier. The six veteran players will aid Head Coach Jim Lee Howell and his coaching staft in indoctrinating the rookies into the Giants system of play. Outstanding rookies included Hal Burnine, Missouri's 'great pass catcher, and Sam Huff, 230-pound tackle from West Virginia. The rest of the squad, 29 veterans, is due to report next Sunday.”
