I will safely assume this is "an adult friendship." Honestly, your wife needs better friends. This one sounds like a drain ... a complete taker.

have her give the answer that the friend does not want to hear. Yes eat a salad for lunch, Yes go to the gym. Eventually she will just stop asking.

if you want to feel better about yourself. Don't lose these connections... otherwise the bar gets a little too high.

just tell her what she doesn't want to hear and she'll be gone.

I told my wife to start doing this. She had been largely ignoring her. I'll let you all know what happens.

a family member that does something similar. Ending the relationship is not an option for me because its family. I just be direct. Not mean, but direct in saying “I don’t know what you should do”. Or just turn it around and say “I don’t know, what do you think you should do?” Then just listen sympathetically without giving a decision. Everyone needs to make their own decisions at some point, I would tell your wife to be direct and honest and point out that enabling this person may not be helpful in the long run. Sounds like this person has other issues going on.

They are less concerned about the actual topic, solving their problem, learning something new or whatever, just want YOU to look at them and blather on for themselves. And as you said it's like the "asking advice" platitude - people only ask advice w/ hopes you agree. In this case to 'make them feel better' about an obvious bad choice (and if you disagree, they get pissed at you no less)

and if she's not happy with that say good-bye or change the subject.
