Also, I may take grief for this, but M&Ms are pretty friggin nasty. I don't know if they recently changed the recipe, but they now taste like spoiled chocolate with a chemical coating to me.
I think they were supposed to be lemon and lime, but the only really truly awful necco wafer flavor was the purple.
And as a kid for me it was like bakers chocolate, that unsweetened chocolate that no matter how many times I saw it and my mother told me not to eat it, it doesn't taste good, I still had to try it.
purple candy should taste good. but the purple necco wafers tasted like cigarette ashes, yet every time I saw them I still ate it. Maybe it was cigarette ashes and it was like the Simpsons when homer created tomacco (the mix of tobacco and tomatoes)
For his famed South Pole expedition, Admiral Byrd brought 2 1/2 tons of Necco Wafers. That provided nearly 1 pound per week per man for the two year expedition.
and I could never understand why people bought so much candy that tasted like SHIT. Necco Wafers was tops and Good n Plenty was another. Just munch on a urinal cake or buy a box of chalk it lasts longer and you can write a message for help in a pinch

I'm hoping that Necco wafers have some sort of value in the event of a disaster/ration situation, because allocating resources to pull 2.5 tons of Necco wafers to the South Pole with the technology they had available to them at the time seems like a horrendous waste.

For a 2 year expedition with little local food sources you need to haul a lot of calories. NECCO Wafers don’t freeze. They don’t melt. They don’t require special storage. Their packaging is small and lightweight. They don’t rot or degrade over time. Even if smashed and damaged they’re just as edible.
invented back when your candy options were limited. Like many such candies (I like Mary Janes but it applies to Goldenberg's Peanut Chews, Smarties and a good many more) they no longer stack up next to modern incarnations and we eat them out of nostalgia. Nostalgia for when our grandparents' grandparents' grandparents were young.
I'm old enough to remember penny candy, but as a child I was allergic to chocolate and nuts, so I missed out on a lot.
Banana Splits, Mint Juleps, root beer barrels, Mary Janes and a few others were 2 for a penny. Jaw breakers, Atomic balls and red & black licorice whips were in the mix. With a nickel or a dime, you could buy an afternoon of tooth rotting goodness.
Some odd ones were the candy cigarettes in the realistic looking boxes, the wax bottles filled with God knows what and "Wampum"... strips of paper with dots of candy lined up in rows.

That can't be true ...? How many ships were on that expedition? 2 1/2 tons must take up a of of room that could have been used for other important things - like food and water? That is crazy ...

I think they found them and that’s what they have been selling the past few years
Old timers, remember Nickle-Nips? They're back, but more expensive, of course. Colored sugar water in wax bottles. We used to melt the wax to put in bottle caps to play Skully. Link - ( New Window )
a fan of Neccos but only once in a while and almost always for a movie. Not a huge fan of Good n Plenty but their theme song is one of the best as far as candy goes.

Both of these are on the top of my list.
worst candy ever is whoppers. they taste like something in them is spoiled.
circus peanuts are a good call too, they taste like someone put coloring on the styrofoam packing peanuts.
Chocolate was no good and licorice was good
One of my all time favorites. Those green apple and banana flavors are delightful.

I guess I shouldn't marry you then. I swear she likes them just so she doesn't have to share her candy with me.

How about the Bit O' Honey theme song?
"Bit O' Honey goes a long. long way...
If you have one head it lasts all day"
