NFT: Jason Vargas: GET IT TOGETHER MAN!

PatchoguePete : 5/21/2018 2:31 pm
Tonight, the Mets look to continue their winning ways. 3 wins in a row. 2 games out of first in the loss column. 1 game out of the WC. Unfortunately Jason Vargas is pitching tonight, so it'll probably be 12-0 Marlins after 2 innings.
Is this the game thread?
ZGiants98 : 5/21/2018 2:51 pm : link
Yeesh
send him down,
cjd2404 : 5/21/2018 3:09 pm : link
trade him, have him mow the lawn...something, anything other than let him pitch
Jason Vargas has pitched in 3 games/12 innings total this year
ZGiants98 : 5/21/2018 3:17 pm : link
My God. 5th starters get bombed. Colon had stretches that were comically bad. Can we give this guy a few weeks? Holy smokes.

And no.... I don’t think Vargas is ever going to be a great pitcher... but he might round into the 5th starter we expected him to be.
.
arcarsenal : 5/21/2018 3:25 pm : link
It's more than just 3 games. He was abysmal the entire 2nd half of last year. He had an ERA well over 6.

Vargas is a 35 year old junkballer who looks like Jon Lovitz and is pitching so poorly that he's not even allowing the team to compete when he's on the mound.

He might get it together and be "passable" but his stuff is terrible and I'm not holding my breath.
.
arcarsenal : 5/21/2018 3:26 pm : link
Bottom line - if he sucks again tonight, they have to pull the plug. Can't have an auto loss in the rotation every 5 days like this where the pitcher isn't even giving the team a chance. On top of that, he's completely wiping out the pen every time he goes put there because he's averaging 4 innings a start.
Thank you Z

It's funny, it has been almost a carbon copy of the trash he provided just over 10 years ago.

2007:

10.1 IP, 12.19 ERA, 8.08 FIP, 14.8 H/9

2018:

12.1 IP, 13.86 ERA, 8.89 FIP, 19.0 H/9

Yeah, it's been a real blast today.
You know 10-12 IP is a comically
ZGiants98 : 5/21/2018 3:37 pm : link
Small sample for a SP right? Can we see where he’s at at 50 IP before making whole sale changes on a guy we just signed to a two year deal.

I know he’s a junkballer and he’s definitely not anything exciting but he was also an all star last year. Guys like Cobb and Lynn are off to horrific starts while getting paid three times the coin. Vargas also didn’t really have a ST due to his injury.

Man, let’s just take a deep breath.
.
arcarsenal : 5/21/2018 3:42 pm : link
Sure, it took him 3 starts to get to 12 innings, so simple math tells me he'll need roughly 12 starts to hit 50 innings.

I'm sure we can afford to throw away another 5-6 games with him on the mound. He's been terrible since July of last year. It's not a small sample size. It's like 90 innings of pure garbage.

Vargas sucks.
.
arcarsenal : 5/21/2018 3:44 pm : link
He's started roughly 20 games since last July and has gotten through 6 allowing 3 runs or less just 4 times.

What else do we need to see here? He's 35 years old. He's not learning or improving or ascending.

Mind-bogging that this guy got 2 years.
It’s a long season and we aren’t depending on him
ZGiants98 : 5/21/2018 4:03 pm : link
For anything... even if he does round into a 5th starter, he’s not starting playoff games or anything if we get there. And if he doesn’t? We can move a Gsellman or Lugo to the rotation. Heck I bet even a Oswalt could be a decent 5th starter. I’m hoping for more stability from Matz and Wheeler going forward and continued dominance from Thor/DeGrom. We’ll be ok.

I know. It's all love. I'll be the first one to be excited and optimistic if I feel like the team is playing well and going in the right direction.

The entire last couple of months of 2015 I was as confident as anyone. Every time people thought the Nats were about to make a run I was supremely confident we were better and they wouldn't catch us.

I was super optimistic down the stretch in 2014 too - which wasn't even a good season. Just because I thought it looked like all the young kids were on the way up and the future was super bright.

I'm just disgruntled and want this team to be better. Hopefully they'll turn it around and get back on track here. I can't deal with another lost season. I'm so tired of losing.

24 wins and 19 loses.

24 + 19 = 43

24 wins / 43 total games - .558

162 games at .558 winning percentage is 163 x .558 = 90.4

(this is a Mets thread so you have to show your work).
90 wins
Metnut : 5/22/2018 9:16 am : link
might not be a good enough this year. With teams like the Marlins, Reds, Pads all so bad, a lot of teams are at or above .500. The Nationals will be getting players back relatively soon also, Cards will get Reyes back, etc., so things aren't going to be easy. The Mets will have to keep winning to get back to the playoffs.

Solid performance by Vargas and the pen last night. Hopefully Wheeler can give us something tonight.
I agree Metnut
figgy2989 : 5/22/2018 9:52 am : link
There are a lot of bad teams for the NL to feast on this year. 90 wins might not be enough. You also have to think teams like the Nats and Dodgers are going to start playing better while the Phils and Braves might come back down to earth.

I’ll tell you why I think the Braves will fall, you'll tell me how they won’t based on X, I’ll tell you why I think they will and why the Mets and Nats are more talented based on Y... we’ll both disagree and the only thing that will prove it will be the end result. Am I close?

Because I like you, The Braves, Phillies, and Braves are all 2.5 games apart. The Braves and Phillies are young teams that have had just about everything go right. They have talent but not a ton of depth for when injuries will most certainly hit. I also don’t think the Braves have the top pitching to last the summer months. The Mets have had just about everything go wrong. Key guys are out again, most of the lineup has underperformed, some younger guys are just getting their feet wet. Everyone will self correct eventually and players will play up to the backs of their baseball cards before long. The Mets have better depth IMO and will be buyers at the deadline. I see it as Mets and Nats finishing between 90-95 wins of relatively healthy with the Phillies and Braves finishing more in the 80-85 range.. both still a year away.
That’s fine but the only thing I 100% disagree about depth

The Braves don’t have the pitching depth? Come on man they have Top 100 prospect’s Luiz Gohara, making his first start today, Mike Soroka, and Kolby Allard in AAA dominating. Not to mention last years top 5 pick Kyle Wright and another top prospect Touki Toussaint in AA. They also have Matt Wisler in AAA who has pitched surprisingly well. Tyler Flowers is hurt? No problem here comes Suzuki. They also have top 3B prospect Austin Riley raking in AAA. How is that a lack of depth? I am not going to argue about any other points.
For the record

I don’t think Atlanta is going to win the NL East but I do think they will be in the WC hunt for the whole year.
I’m saying you don’t gave the top end proven pitching
ZGiants98 : 5/22/2018 2:23 pm : link
To last the summer and if a few guys go down a couple of prospects in AA/AAA wouldn’t be able to just step in like a Gsellman or Lugo could. You might have depth in terms of your outlook over he next few years but not in terms of your playoff chances in 2018 imo.

And that’s possible. I’m saying 80-85 and the top end of that is likely in the wild card mix. I do think the dog days of summer will slow you down though.

It’s all good but you’ve been making comments like “I love Sandy Alderson, etc.”. I’d slow it down a little bit.

I don’t think Alderson is a good GM. I’m not alone in that regard. I know you disagree and that’s fine but I don’t see the point in getting upset or angry that I don’t think Sandy is the right man to lead the Mets. I was just trying to bring humor to yesterday’s thread.
I won’t make anymore Sandy jokes

....
I’m not upset or angry at all...
ZGiants98 : 5/22/2018 2:33 pm : link
It just comes off as cocky and that you suddenly think the Braves are so much better. Just something I observed. It’s still a little early.

Mets fans are a fickle bunch. If the Mets are in the postseason and the farm rebounds on the heals of players like Alonso/Peterson (It will)... everybody will be all over Sandy’s junk again.

How is it being cocky? I think the Braves will be in the WC hunt, they are currently in 1st place. They lead the NL in offense, 4th in ERA, and a very good bullpen. I didn’t even predict them to win the division I think it will be Washington or Philly. I am enjoying this season as it is the first time in 4 years that the Braves are a good team. If you were in my shoes you would be over the moon.
Seriously?
ZGiants98 : 5/22/2018 2:44 pm : link
You don’t see how “thanking” Sandy for the current Mets situation might come of as cocky when we are 2.5 games apart and the Mets have had virtually nothing go right?

I get it. You were joking. I’m telling you what I perceived. We hashed it out. What else needs to be said?
Plawecki joining Vegas tomorrow to begin

Playing in games. Whoohoo. Finally some good injury news. Hopefully, Frazier and Cespedes are only a few days out as well.

Dude, you put thanking in quotes. My exact words were
I think Sandy has done an excellent job. He deserves a lifteime extension.
Let's move on

this took too long.
I think Sandy was the perfect fit

to shepherd the organization through the financial crisis the team found themselves in after Madoff cost the Wilpons.

I don't think he has proven the best to take them to the next level, and that is what they currently need in a GM.
