Looks like former Panthers WR Russell Shepard has signed with #NYGiants. Released by Carolina last week. Had inked a 3-year deal last offseason with Panthers + then-GM Dave Gettleman. An outstanding gunner on special teams, so Thomas McGaughey link too...

Good find. We already have a lot of players to "feed" the ball to. It's really Important the specials teams have talent.
Lattimer is a good St player. Roger Lewis is ok.
Our special teams were so bad, getting guys who can excel,at specials should have a marked improvement that keeps us in games,
watched Russell Shepard cover a punt. He is channeling an opinion from a source he is choosing not to name.
Roger Lewis was talked up as being a great gunner but anyone who paid attention could see he had the athleticism to get down there but no appetite for throwing himself into a high speed tackle.
Very understandable on the part of an offensive player for whom tackling is not instinctive.
It wound up costing NYG the Lions game Week 2 last year when Lewis dodged a tackle opportunity and the return went 86 yards.
I'll look up Shepard's gunner act on Game Pass with an open mind. Yes, specials do need help,

LB Tae Davis is a player that could be a surprise on the 53 man roster. He is said to be a great special teams player and he could be a cheaper, younger, and faster replacement for Herzlich.
Incredible athlete, but I don't know if he's ever developed into a football player. Admittedly, I didn't follow him too closely after college, but he was REALLY underwhelming as a Tiger.
Shepard is a good ST player who can also play WR in a pinch and actually separate a bit thanks to his athleticism. He's had quite a few starts in his career.
He is a direct replacement to Harris as a ST player, but younger, cheaper, and healthier. Plus he is a better WR than Harris. Not a returner though (like Harris), or at least he hasn't been.
The ST coverage units are looking really good. Michael Thomas is one of the best ST players around, and Shepard is a very good one as well. So is Latimer. Plus, I think Sean Chandler is going to be a good STer if he makes the 53, which I believe he will.
It's interesting that we keep picking up guys who have been waived, and yet it is only May. I have a feeling we're going to see a lot of faces come and go August and early September.
Had multiple double digit tackle seasons for Tampa and was there special teams captain. Adding Latimer, Michael Thomas & Shepard should really improve our special teams.
One guy is going to be our primary gunner and one guy is bagging groceries. No team in the NFL uses two wide receiver position slots on special teams and I don't expect the Giants to

Well then Barkley has to pick a new number. This is Orleans Darkwa we are talking about.
LOLOLOL
This year we are appeasing Sterling Shepard by signing family.
Darkwa would be the 8th best WR if he was targeted 40 times a game.
Had 33 receptions for only a 7.7 yd avg in 2010, which was the year before OBJ got there.
Then Shepard's receptions dropped to 14 and 6 his last two years, and he wasn't doing a whole lot else either.
Signed as UDFA with Tampa and hardly got on the field from 2013-2015.
In 2016, he had 23 receptions for 341 years.
Gettleman then signed him to a 3 yr/10M deal for Carolina.
In 2017, he had 17 receptions for 202 yards on 482 offensive snaps.
Yards per snap is my favorite stat for evaluating WRs. 0.42 is about as bad as it gets. Not many players performing at that level get 482 snaps.
Panthers released him after the season, cutting their losses.
DG wants to take another swing.

It's too bad Eli is such a malcontent that won't take to coaching. Oh and he is a pocket passer and those can't win in the NFL anymore.
Hopefully he can have a special teams impact.

Two quotes from two posters:
"So he's supposed to be some special teams ace but can anyone recall a single tackle he made on special teams?"
As mentioned, exactly the problem with Lewis as a gunner.
And: "I'm not a Gettleman 'hater' but that was a straight trash free agent signing."
You're welcome. I will check Shepard out on Game Pass when I can.

Because if they, they'd have to make room for him, thus would have to cut Barkley
