NFT: Islander Fans Unite!

Looks as if Lou Lamoriello will be in charge of hockey operations starting today (rumors of an announcement today are out there). As a long suffering fan of this team, I am ecstatic about the move. Lou is a professional and will hopefully turn this into a professional organization. The big question is, what does this mean for Tavares? Apparently he has reached out already. I know how important Tavares is to this team, but I wonder if it is worth giving him a max contract. That is a lot of years for a guy who will be 30 in a few years. Could that money be spent elsewhere?
And if this were 1998, that might mean something

Yeah, back when Lou was in his early 70's.
Wasn’t Lou just “let go” by Toronto?
figgy2989 : 5/22/2018 9:21 am : link
Not to rain on the Islander fans celebration, but he ran the Devils into the ground and had to be replaced by Shero. His stint with the Leafs was less than 3 years. Dude is pushing 80, what value does he bring?
I had Frank Sinatra in this chair
Greg from LI : 5/22/2018 9:22 am : link
I say to him, Frank, you know Lou Lamoriello, how old is he? You know what Frank told me? He said hey, Lou Lamoriello is 137 years old. A HUNDRED AND THIRTY SEVEN YEARS OLD!
I don't care if LL is 100 years old, the last GM was a backup goalie
Eric on Li : 5/22/2018 9:24 am : link
this is the most legitimate hire by this organization in more than 3 decades. Has LL lost something off his fastball? I'm sure he has but his age isn't a secret - part of his hiring will likely include staffing the rest of the FO who may or may not then be part of the future.
You have to understand
Metnut : 5/22/2018 9:27 am : link
that he's replacing Garth Snow. Toronto was a bit of a laughingstock and Lou at least played some part in getting them to respectable again. The word around is that Hunter is also leaving Toronto and will be coming to join NYI after the FA period.
well toronto's assistant GM was also
pjcas18 : 5/22/2018 9:28 am : link
just separated from Toronto and Lou's son Chris is in the Islanders FO too.
So, a few options.
RE: Wasn’t Lou just “let go” by Toronto?
theold5j : 5/22/2018 9:29 am : link
No he wasn't "let go". Apparently they had a 3 year plan with Lou to phase out of GM spot and the guy they were grooming to take over. That was what Toronto and Lou have said from day 1.

As a fan, I'm happy cause it was time for a change and if there's one thing Lou is going to do is make changes. He's a credible name. He's 75 so this is not a long term project. But maybe he can lay the ground work for someone else like he did in Toronto.

Not an Islanders fan
Gman11 : 5/22/2018 9:32 am : link
but the Maple Leafs were floundering just a few years ago. Now, they look like a team on the verge of contending for the Cup. Why they let Lou go "because it was in his contract" I don't understand. He built the team up and, when the contract was up, didn't even give him the option of continuing in his present capacity.

Well having consecutive years of top 5 picks and having Marner and Matthews fall into your lap certainly helps.

Not for Edmonton it hasn't. Or Buffalo. Or Arizona. Or most of the other teams who picked as high as TOR during those years and didn't hire LL.
The Islanders have had top
Metnut : 5/22/2018 9:37 am : link
picks for over a decade and have stunk. Just having top picks doesn't mean you're going to have a good team.
Yeah you have to make the picks
pjcas18 : 5/22/2018 9:38 am : link
so Toronto FO does deserve some credit obviously, but having Nylander, Marner, Matthews in consecutive years as top 10 picks helps turn a franchise around. Though only Matthews of those three was under Lou's leadership I believe. Lou did select Liligren who I like too, but he's not NHL ready yet. Next year probably.

You have to be really bad sometimes to get better and Toronto has been bad.

But they still deserve credit since Edmonton has been worse and hasn't markedly improved.

It's hard to take much from his stint in TOR since it was so short
Eric on Li : 5/22/2018 9:43 am : link
from a top level I'd say the improvement in record alone has to be looked at as a net positive even if circumstantial. The end of his tenure with the devils post Brodeur is more of a concern than his time in Toronto.

Good call PJ, he was hired the month after the 2015 draft.

I understand the excitement from Isles fans on the hire and you guys are right, anything is better than Snow. I just remember Lou leaving the Devils franchise in shambles prior to his departure and left Shero to clean up his mess. As long as he puts the right FO in place and get Snow out of there, it is a step in the right direction
It is not just about Lamoriello taking charge
marbles : 5/22/2018 9:49 am : link
It is about a culture change. Players are no longer on scholarship. Lamoriello rid Toronto of some dead weight as well.

It is also about who Lamoriello brings with him to run the franchise.

And he already spoke to Tavares on behalf of the Islanders. So he is already attacking the franchise's biggest off-season issue in decades.

Now Snow has extra time to go for thirds at the buffet table, and maybe play soduku.

Ledecky is just along for the ride. There are rumors that Tavares has already or will be signing a contract. Mark Hunter from Toronto will be joining Lou after the draft/free agency.

There may be 12 of us but we are still in better shape than the other team from NY. Find a real goalie this year and a stud Defenseman and I think this team competes. This of course is all about Tavares re-signing.

Honestly, the Rangers tanked last year and you still barely finished ahead of us. If you think you are a "real" goalie and a "stud" defenseman away from competing, you live in a different world. Not to mention, how are you going to afford said "stud" defenseman and "real" goalie (which wont even come close to doing it for you) when you now have to pay Tavarres, a guy you can't win with. I know, it was Capuano, then it was Snow and Weight, and pretty soon we will be hearing that its Lamoriello. You have won one playoff series in 25 years. Islander fans make me laugh. I hope the Isles resign Tavares. You couldn't win anything with him at a cheaper salary, nothing to make me think you will be anymore successful with him at a much steeper salary.
So, no you are not in better shape than us.
Essex : 5/22/2018 12:37 pm : link
. . . we are both in bad shape, the only difference is it seems you are going to double down on your shape while we are going to try to correct our so we can "compete" in a few years.

Pure class. Yes the organization is not run well. We get it. Whom would you take on your roster over Barzal and Tavares? Just curious as to the justification for the arrogance. The Rangers are an old organization with a lot of history. Being a perennial powerhouse isn't one of them. The rivalry is gift, but trying to understand the entitlement with Rangers fans, is something i struggle with. Do Islander fans regularly give you guys crap, and its par for the course?
I wasn't the one who said we were in
Essex : 5/22/2018 12:50 pm : link
"better" shape than the "other team" in NY. I didn't say a word on this thread. But, just having Tavares and Barzal doesn't mean you are in better shape than anyone. In fact, as I said, doubling down on this supposedly great team you have that hasn't made the playoffs the last two years and has one won playoff series against a pathetic Florida team in 25 years is not the team I would want to say is in better shape than anyone, even if you have the two best offensive players in NY.

Nobody on this thread suggested the Islanders were a "great" team. Which of these two franchises is in better shape is a silly discussion since neither is in great shape.

They were the 8th best offense in the NHL last year, so shoring up the defense and adding a good goaltender won't make them competitive?

Not really. The Rangers mortgaged their future trying to win a cup with Lundqvist in his prime, and rightfully so. It was the right decision. However, the cupboard is bare for them at the moment.

Sorry I disagree about being in terrible shape if Tavares stays. They do have some work to do, though. As do a lot of teams.

If the Islanders manager to re-sign Tavares
Mike from Ohio : 5/22/2018 2:59 pm : link
then obviously they are in much better shape. But getting past the first or second round of the playoffs is going to take defensive structure and goaltending that they just don't have now. I don't know that the first part of that equation requires a lot of new talent on D, but it requires more sound defensive structure from both the forwards and the defensemen.

The goaltending is a much harder problem to solve. This can be a playoff team for sure with what they have now on offense (with Tavares back), but a first round series win seems to be the limit.
RE: If the Islanders manager to re-sign Tavares
theold5j : 5/22/2018 3:48 pm : link
Mike I agree about goaltending being the tough part but it's not fair to put limits on any team in May for the next season. I mean teams jump up every year and make runs. Isles haven't but others have. It happens. On paper there's no way Veags is a cup team but look where they are. It happened. Whether it's a miracle or not, it still happened.
