I have this theory on Eli Manning

wgenesis123 : 5/22/2018 10:03 am
I believe from my own observation that Eli needs more work in preseason games. I don't know if stats would back me up but it has seemed to me that the less he played in the preseason the more likely he was to be flat out of the starting gate. Is this just me or has anyone else noticed the same thing?
LOL...
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/22/2018 10:04 am : link
anybody have any Advil?
other than the year he got the gash on his head
ron mexico : 5/22/2018 10:05 am : link
has his playing time in the preseason varied that much?

Seems like he plays about the same amount every year

They have cut back his reps in preseason, especially under MaGoo!
wgenesis123 : 5/22/2018 10:07 am : link
.
Years ago starters worked their way up in preseason to playing
wgenesis123 : 5/22/2018 10:11 am : link
at least a half the last game. Now they don't play at all the last game.
He's been in the league a very long time
UberAlias : 5/22/2018 10:11 am : link
He's faced just about everything, he's a tireless worker in camp and in the film room. Lack of pre-season reps? No.
I don't think the pre-season reps...
BamaBlue : 5/22/2018 10:13 am : link
are any big deal for a guy who's been in the league since 2004. The guys who need the reps are the OL, DL, Lauletta and Webb.
This attitude
Doomster : 5/22/2018 10:13 am : link
that you don't play your starters much in preseason, to avoid injuries, has to stop.....

Didn't help us avoid them last season.....

Especially when you have new players and a new system, they should play more in preseason, than they have in the past....this offense has floundered out of the gate the last several seasons...
All I hear around here is how playing in their underwear in practice
wgenesis123 : 5/22/2018 10:16 am : link
means nothing, especially when they can't hit and than I hear how all these practice reps are equal to actually playing in a game. Its just not the same thing. Eli is like everyone else, he needs real competition to sharpen his game.
The offense..
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/22/2018 10:18 am : link
has floundered out of the gate??

Just two years ago, we beat Dallas 20-19 in the opener. Eli had 3TD's and an INT.

The next two games, he had over 350 yards passing in both.
Doomster...
BamaBlue : 5/22/2018 10:20 am : link
the avoidance of injuries is a reality. The risk is just for the sake of injury, but injury in a meaningless situation.

Stop it! You're citing facts. Just ... stop it.
Eli an immobile quarterback
joeinpa : 5/22/2018 10:22 am : link
Played behind a line that could not pass protect or run the ball with any consistency.

Not that complicated
Not a crazy observation.
NorwoodWideRight : 5/22/2018 10:28 am : link
When instilling a new offense, like when McAdoo decided to switch things up after Gilbride, yes, I could see how he would have benefited from more live reps. He looked very uncomfortable at times.

But last year or the year before? No.
Normally
Beer Man : 5/22/2018 10:29 am : link
I don't see an issue with protecting the QB during the preseason. However, with the implementation of Shumur's new O, Eli may need to get in a bit more work.
...
christian : 5/22/2018 10:33 am : link
I'd fully expect Manning to get more burn in the pre-season in a brand new system. Whether Shula adjusts the pocket and drop back mechanics of the QBs will be a factor. Remember McAdoo got Manning to change his footwork significantly.
With the new O
The Natural : 5/22/2018 10:37 am : link

solution
giantfan2000 : 5/22/2018 10:41 am : link
if they just played 3 exhibition games instead of 4

it would probably make teams play more 1 stringers in the games
which would make the exhibition games better
i don't disagree w the OP
Dave : 5/22/2018 10:52 am : link
also, consider that the reps benefit the entire O, not just the qb
And I think Eli
NikkiMac : 5/22/2018 10:57 am : link
Does need more reps in the preseason just as

Phil Simms did.......
I felt the same way last year with McAdoo
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 5/22/2018 11:36 am : link
Manning didn't play in the first or last preseason games and only played about half of the other two. With the amount of practice time reduction, seems like he isn't playing enough.
I have a theory with Eli too
Matt M. : 5/22/2018 12:00 pm : link
It seems like every day somebody just makes something up to stir shit up and tries to go with it. Same goes for Barkley, Gettleman, and one or two select others. Fucking ENOUGH!

The Giants hired an excellent and professional GM and HC. Both have good resumes. Can we give them a fucking chance before we keep writing every decision, draft choice, personnel move, etc. off?

Now, we're reading Eli needs more reps...until he gets hurt playing the 3rd quarter of a pre-season game. We're reading that Webb might outplay him and then there is a decision. And on and on.

Eli Manning is the QB of the Giants. Period. Deal with it. This will be the case this year and perhaps next year and possibly even beyond depending on how things go. Barkley is the lead RB and will likely be on the field all 3 downs a lot of the time. Deal with it.

We didn't draft Darnold or Rosen. Neither has played a down in the NFL. So, nobody should really be that upset right now. Let the HC and GM do their jobs.

If Eli had played every single snap last preseason, it wouldn’t have meant squat given what and who he had to throw to for much of the season
I have a theory also
NYBEN1963 : 5/22/2018 12:29 pm : link
Eli will be very good this season now that he has a real HC and a real NFL offense to run
I would like to see Starters play Game 1 most of first qurter; Game 2
Ivan15 : 5/22/2018 12:48 pm : link
First half; Game 3, into 3rd quarter; Game 4, most of first quarter.

Battles to start, for example RT, should be decided before Game 3.
I think it applies to the entire offense.
Giant John : 5/22/2018 12:52 pm : link
Team has not opened the season well on offense in years.

What in the wild world does that have to do with anything posted on this thread?
I actually agree with the OP
JFIB : 5/22/2018 1:19 pm : link
I think in general the team has not looked very well prepared to start the season. The starters under Ben did not play much in pre-season and I would attribute at least some of that to less playing time in the weeks leading up to opening day. I really hope coach runs a tough disciplined training camp and we look ready on opening day.

I guess McAdoo's offense and playcalling was fine then...
Eli/Preseason
Giantslifer : 5/22/2018 1:41 pm : link
If Eli needs pre season to figure out how to play football the Giants are in BIG trouble.
most likely what Eli needs is a simplified offense. hand off/look deep/ throw to Barkley in flat.
NO passes over middle, except deep , and NO running (more than 5 yards)
No passes over the middle??

wait, he did except deep!
Everybody know Eli can't throw deep anymore
Jimmy Googs : 5/22/2018 1:50 pm : link
that's not an exception...
You forgot that if its 3rd and 6
dep026 : 5/22/2018 1:51 pm : link
he shouldnt run past 5 yards either. Even if there is no one in front of him!
And are we really concerned that Eli is going to
Jimmy Googs : 5/22/2018 1:52 pm : link
run for more than 5 yards?

i think we can skip that one too...
Beat me to it
Jimmy Googs : 5/22/2018 1:54 pm : link
The key is lets gets a simplified Offense in there for Eli. He has been known to get confused with the numerous options available to him in the 1.8 seconds the O-line gives.

Really? taking the 5 yard run as literal?
Remember the GREAT Philly run.... untouched fumble.

Dont know why we didnt castrate him on the spot there.

I also remember many over the middle throws, especially to OBJ, that won us a lot of games and socred us a lot of points too.
So you're saying that after 14 years in the league
Scuzzlebutt : 5/22/2018 2:05 pm : link
Eli needs more practice? ok.
I have this theory on Eli Manning too...
the mike : 5/22/2018 2:16 pm : link
If we develop an offensive line that protects him... surround him with multiple elite weapons who remain healthy and provide a truly balanced offensive attack... hire a GM who knows something about talent development... who hires a coaching staff that implements an offensive scheme that actually exploits Eli's talents rather than detracts from them... And who publicly supports and praises him rather than singling him out and blaming him for the coach's own ineptness... Well then - perhaps Eli might just have the potential to win a super bowl or two. Who knows. Call me crazy.
Don't crap on the OP's theory...remember this 1st throw of the season

Actually they always worked themselves to play into the 3rd quarter of their 2nd to last preseason game and used to play a series in the last preseason game.

The Giants were completely unprepared to play offensive football under Mcadoo at the start of seasons.

How many points did the giants score in that 350 passing yard game vs the Saints. You're better then throwing out empty stats, fatman.

Not to mention, 20 points isnt a good point total. It's actually bad in todays NFL.

Is it because of a lack of preseason snaps? I'm not sure but the offense in at least two opening days (last yr dallas, @ detroit) the offense completely was unprepared under mcadoo as both HC and OC
