and you don't need to empty them regularly like a dehumidifier - only occasionally for condensation?
Yes...I have had an LG for three years and I only empty the bucket once a year. Of course where I live in upstate New York we only have about two months of warm weather.
If you're handy, you can pick up black pond hose line from Home Depot (super cheap -- $20 for 50') run it to the back of the unit where the drain plug is. You need to drain these units manually unless you do this, and the pond hose is a perfect fit for the valve. Drill a hole in the flange that fits in the window and run the hose outside so it can drain automatically.
The units have a shut off when it fills up. Depending on the humidity, this can become a MAJOR pain in the ass if you don't run a line like I illustrated above.
For me and my disc problems, not having to remove and install a window unit each fall & spring was a major consideration. Louder and uses more electricity than a window unit but it gets the job done.
Got one for a room where I needed to put it in a cheap vinyl window and didn't want to worry about it supporting the unit. Works well. empty the plug once a summer and yes a bit loud.
for my daughter about 5 years ago for her apt. in Boston when she was in college. It was a lifesaver. Big room with high ceilings. A little noisy but not terrible. Use CNET as a guide. For an individual room they are great especially because they are portable. Recommend washing the filter every couple of weeks. Just run it under warm water for 15 seconds and you are good to go. Most have the reuseable filters.
Only maintenance is draining the condensation out every now and then. There will be a small plug at the bottom of these units.
