NFL changes will redefine O & D line techique

Giantsfan79 : 5/22/2018 5:13 pm
without cutting and pasting the whole article it basically said the NFL announced today that the new helmet rules will apply to lineman as well.

To review lowering your helmet prior to initiating contact will now be a penalty - and expulsion for multiple violations. It makes sense if you are talking about players getting a running start before contact but not so much with lineman where contact is made before too much momentum is built up.

This seems like one of those rules that could be called on almost every play. Also for a d-lineman in a 3 or 4 point stance, being forced to lift your head is almost always going to stand you up and give away leverage.

That's one

that can be called every play but also one of those that if they do call it'll be more often in September and October.....In January they're not making game changing calls on that.
Say goodbye to short yardage plays.

Lowering your helmet means looking at the ground and exposing your spine to permanent damage. You are taught from day one, to see what you hit, if you lower your head you can't see it and you can snap your neck. Getting your head bent backwards hurts but it won't paralyze you.

It's essentially outlawing spearing again with stricter language, it won't destroy the game as many portend. This cow is too fat to let die.
Anyone looking at a lineman's helmet after a game would see all the

scrapes and scratches from numerous helmet to helmet strikes during the game. Both sides are trying to get as low as possible, especially in goal line situations.

Is this going to be like baseball where the official strike zone varies from League to League and from umpire to umpire?
Its a dangerous sport

Here are the reasons risks...

Brain damage
Paralysis
Torn ligaments
Cracked bones

If these cool concern you, don’t play. Otherwise...deal with the risks.

that they are doing everything to reduce head injuries, they will be making the game unwatchable. Some shameless attention whore ref will be making his presence know every game calling these.

Can't wait until some guy that is tripped falls forward into another player and is given 15 yards.

The Kickoff changes virtually eliminate the onside kick.
This is all posturing by the NFL

Past few years they have seemed to lack cohesion

Which seems to result from lots of variation in understanding what the rules actually are.

Which seems to me to indicate that additional detail is required in the actual rule book.

Define lowered helmet. Define impact, define situations. It doesn't seem doable for linesmen when at the line.
I mean, with linesmen
idiotsavant : 5/23/2018 9:04 am : link
It would be every play, every team, both sides of the ball...

That's too fundamental of a change.

Is Godell really that dumb?

Goodell doesn't make these decisions. The competition committee does.

see what you hit and there's no issue ... hopefully they'll be able to instruct officials to understanding. Hell, put them in a helmet and tackle drill and show them.
I mean, on many plays you literally cannot line up

Without pointing your helmet - if your a linesman. This constant tweaking of a selling product is mind bogglingly stupid.

Fix that catch rule vaguery and that's it.

Exactly.
Your helmet can contact the man across from you
JonC : 5/23/2018 1:17 pm : link
but if you're looking at the ground when contact occurs with the crown of the helmet, they've expanded the rule to basically call that spearing like a tackler in the open field spearing a ball carrier.

Find a form tackling video on youtube ...
See what you hit
JonC : 5/23/2018 1:23 pm : link
For linemen there are few instances of spearing, it's going to be a strange situation if they're start calling it often and erroneously.
I think this rule means Flowers
