Gardner is on the bench today against the lefty Hamels.
Didi dropped to the 5 hole against the lefty. The Big 3 righties are batting back to back again.
Yankees Lineup:
Hicks CF
Judge RF
Stanton LF
Sanchez C
Didi SS
Austin DH
Andujar 3B
Walker 1B
Torres 2B
German on the mound
Bird coming back is great news, crazy to think the power numbers we are putting up and now adding back a 20-30 HR guy in bird, wow!
Hamels is a nice pitcher, getting no run support all year....maybe he is a guy we make a move for at deadline? lol
Go Yanks!
I see us going with either one less arm in the BP or someone getting a phantom DL stint.
Torres was always a decent SS defensively but he’s taken it to another level in a short time at 2nd. It really is remarkable
RP- This Torres production is not a complete surprise. He ripped up the AFL and won MVP by hitting .400 the fall before he was injured. This kid is for real and we get to watch him for years to come.
I do as well. There is no reason they can't get Austin in the line-up vs. all lefties when Bird comes back. You can sit Bird for half of them and Gardy for the other half (with Stanton in LF). I think they finally get rid of the extra arm in the bullpen when Bird returns and keep Austin around. Kahnle should be returning around same time as Bird, and Warren isn't too far behind him. That will clean up and strengthen the bullpen, and put less of a need on the extra arm as well.
Agreed. If/when Bird returns and is healthy, he will be an everyday player. But he will certainly get the occasional rest here and there, and that will be vs. lefties. But Austin can still get in the line-up vs. every lefty by sitting Gardy, putting Stanton in LF, and DH'ing Austin (what they are doing tonight). Gardy stinks against lefties at this point in his career (has been real bad past couple years). He is still an upgrade over Stanton in the field, but you gotta get Stanton in the OF sometimes anyway. And Gardy at 35, can use the breaks here and there...particularly with the all-out style he plays with.
That was everyone's concern at start of season.
What is it gonna cost Cashman in young talent to patch up the problem?
Too bad. Now Hamels will have the game of the year trying to show Cashman what he can do.
after sevy its all question marks and streaky pitchers.
i dont feel comfortable with any yankee SP on the mound outside of sevy come playoff time.
hamels could be a little rental and at 34 may not cost to much.
lol, was just going to post the same thing.

German is all over the place though.
interesting, I never posted that.
There are some promising arms 2 or 3 years away, though.

Yeah, this team needs pitching. Before Montgomery's injury and Sonny Gray's unraveling, last night not withstanding, I was thinking we needed a 1b or a legit #2, but now, we just need somebody competent who can be relied on to produce the innings. I was reading where Hammels might become an option. If we could get him without giving up a major prospect I think it would be a good get. But no frazier, Andujar, Sheffield, Florial or any of those other guys who are really starting to emerge this year.
There are some promising arms 2 or 3 years away, though.
yea and he has poor plate discipline
Earlier in the year he was swinging wildly, I pointed it out and then he got tighter and started raking. I think he just swings really hard all the time, but when he makes contact it does not stand out. Scouting is finding how to exploit the holes in that swing so his misses look wild.

Is he getting any coaching? He appears to be attacking harder and swinging more wildly.

So you're thinking it really hasn't changed since he started raking? We had an Andujar conversation a week or so ago after that trip against all that good pitching. I was thinking much of his issues were due to the level of pitching, but now he just seems out of control to a large degree regardless of who's throwing to him. I think it might be getting worse. A trip to the minors might do him good. Let him settle things done and reset. Right now it is hard to watch him at the plate...
he is struggling and he comes out hacking at first pitch pop up...
make the fucking guy pitch, we cant get to him, make him work and get him out of the game.
judge had a bad AB too, swung at a lot of shit pitches
didn't see it, but been waiting for that to happen.

His intensity was a little better then I thought .. Boones gonna be okay.
I thought he did a nice job in his first argument , Girardi was elite at it in his last years here
Right now watching Didi is hard. That loopy uppercut swing is killing him.
Hope he's okay
He's still young but his habits and tendencies show me Starlin Castro as of now.
Machado over Andujar , or even over Didi.
Machado needs to be a Yankee next year or even this year to complete the super team. Harper , optional. Manny, needed. Let's open the checkbook as planned and get these super rare stud 26 year old FAs and win 5 of 6 championships plus maybe one this year , upping our total to 33/34 atleast ...
Andujar Blast!!! Maybe I just shined some luck on him, back to Vlad now!!!
Agreed, if no true Ace is available, he's the guy I want as plan B.
Followed up by Andujar's 5th HR.
And for a guy who throws ALLLLLLL of his every last bit of weight into every swing, he's incredibly smooth and effecient.
It's really a treat to see.
He's also about 200-205 pounds now (baseball reference and eyes) also, some websites have him listed at 175 still.

He's really thick and hard if you check out his upper arms and chest, also nice thick thighs , guys a specimen and filling out really well.
Wonder what he looks like when he's fully grown in a few more years

future Yankee Cole Hammels is looking good tonight. He's easily the best pitcher available at the deadline who won't cost a fortune.

yea, mentioned him earlier in the thread as a possible target. he has been pretty good and he would get good run support with the yanks.
he has held the best lineup in baseball to 4 hits and 2 runs through 7 innings...thats pretty damn good
he shouldnt cost to much either and texas wont be in the playoff race so he will be avail.
If no other option is avail as mentioned, he would be a good option....
shit if tanaka, german and gray all continue to struggle we could use two pitchers lol
They will call us first or return our call first for sure when the time comes to talk price .

Sounds like a porn movie description.
who needs Gary?
Nice to see Romine hitting well.
he does!
Yep, they've made some crazy plays. But brings up Torres and the top of the order for the 9th.
The 8 or 9 walks hurt them.

be nice if we can work a man on and have a legit shot with top of lineup coming up
walkers AB kinda sucked, swung at a high pitch could have been working ahead...
*Didi @ .247 and is starting to look like Willie Mays Hays in spring training. Perhaps 20 pushups for every pop up?? Terrible at bat after the 2 walks to Stanton and Sanchez. Where's Lou Brown when you need him? :-)
*Ditto Austin, who shows why he's really not a big time player. After the Didi pop up by Didi, just hacking at garbage.
*Andujar with a dinger and a couple of nice plays a 3B. Yes Denny, what a disappointment. .285 5HR 17 RBI and playing a good 3B. Definitely needs to walk more, but that will come. The kid is a player. He'll learn.
Well he and especially German lolygagged after one and let Chirinos steal a run. Also he didn't stop runners from advancing early on. Listen I'm not killing the guy he has Mike Piazza power, a rifle for a throwing arm and seems to call a pretty good game. The receiving thing is a problem though and he just didn't help a struggling kid out last night by having guys advance like that. It is what it is, other catchers just seem to have better technique with blocking balls in the dirt its just never going to be a strength of his. However he creates a hell of a lot more than say a Lucroy to win a baseball game. You take the ton of good with the little bad...

some props for El Gary behind the plate last night. Got a workout from German. He was so far off the plate and in the dirt so often that it looked like lateral movement drills.

Yeah he'll never be Munson back there, but last night I think was squarely on German. He had no idea where the ball was going.

I was not real impressed with the technique. German was wild and missing his mark by a lot. Gary is not the most nimble catcher and is slow moving after balls away from where he is setup. And yes the PB/WP score is more on Gary than German. If you watch it, German is late, but the ball is later. Even if German is there, the runner is scoring.
It is really not worth talking about because he is what he is and as Coney said his offensive talent far outweighs his defensive lapses, which really are only the blocked balls.
Hope the calf is ok, and I wonder if all the bad pitches by German caused the cramp? That was a lot of quick movement to try and stop WPs.
Getting ahead is paramount. With the 1st 4 runs, he had given up only 2 hits - the home runs. So he has to be able to get those 1st pitch strikes.
All the days off, probably lead to his wildness. And it is true that he was just awful out of the stretch.
Quote:
neither he nor Sanchez had any idea where the ball was going. If he can harness that great (you saw that for approximately one inning), if not he's going to get behind in counts, he's going to have to groove pitches, and those pitches are going to be hit hard.

yep this free swinging Ranger team suddenly has become insanely patient the past 2 nights especially early in the games. German wasn't missing by much early on but they were patient and really jumped on a pitch he left out over the plate.
Still, the guy has some serious shit if he can harness it.

Smart approach against Tanaka whose out pitch(splitter) is a ball and is unhittable, anyway. So do not swing at low pitches and if they are called strikes, so be it. He needs to do something with the FB or he is finished. Should talk to CC.
Hamels would be a nice fit when the time comes and may not cost the team our best prospects given his age and contract status.
Still a lot of time to figure out that situation though. Gray and Tanaka getting back to normal would go a long way towards alleviating those concerns in the rotation. Positive start for Sonny last time out and at least Tanaka is in a better place than he was a year ago this time.
These are nitpicks though. The team is playing fantastic. What else can you say about Gleyber Torres at this point. Cashman turning scraps into Chapman, then flipping Chapman for Gleyber, and bringing Chapman back on top of it all may just be his greatest heist. And that's really saying something.
The question is not whether Hamels would make the Yankees better. He obviously would. The question is whether a 34-year-old rental with home run issues is the right guy — the guy who will put the Yankees over the top — to target at the deadline. The Yankees have time on their side. My preference would be to look for a younger pitcher with more long-term upside and team control, but if that type of pitcher doesn’t become available, the Yankees can always shift gears and look at Hamels.
Will definitely be something to follow.

This is a REALLY bad take.
Does ANYONE remember Tanaka's struggles in May last year? Maybe you forgot Tanaka's 8.42 ERA, with a 1.77 WHIP, going 2-4? Maybe you forgot that Tanaka was 7-8 with a 5.47 ERA in the first half, with a WHIP of 1.373?
Anyone remember the second half or playoffs last year? Yeah, the part where Tanaka went 6-4 with a 3.77 ERA and a WHIP of 1.061. Or the playoffs, where he was the Yanks best SP- going 2-1, with a 0.90 ERA and not even giving up a run in 2 outings.
May is NOT a time for panic for SP- unless you are a 5th SP getting a hard challenge from a rookie. Tanaka will be fine. Every year, fans forget that it is a 162 game season that is a marathon. Because he gives up a LOT of HR, his ERA will run high- but he does win games because most nights, he keeps it close enough for the offense to win it. Then, seems to find an extra gear late in the season.
He's not an ace- that's Severino's job. However, as a #2 SP in the playoffs, he's fine.
Nice story, but he is a classic soft-tossing LHP. He really has zero prospect status with this team- though maybe some other team will latch on since he is a LHP. Maybe they can flip him for some IFA money in July.
Stephan was last year's (2017 draft) 3rd round pick out of Arkansas. He just made his first start in AA after dominating high A ball. The AA start did not go well, but he does have big upside- as an a SP from the SEC, he should continue to move up quickly if he continues to show improvement.
Loisiga was a guy the Yanks literally picked up for nothing a couple years ago. The SF Giants originally signed him as an IFA, but he got hurt and they let him go. The Yanks signed him out of a tryout camp- but soon underwent TJ surgery. After rehab, his stuff was outstanding. He dominated the short season league last year- and despite not playing in a full season league, the Yanks added him to the 40 man roster (was Rule 5 eligible). He has already risen to AA this season. He has been VERY good, but the Yanks are capping him innings. There MIGHT be a possibility that he could be a option for the pen late in the season, assuming he doesn't reach his IP cap.
I should also note that last year's 1st round pick, Clarke Schmidt- is now throwing in extended spring training. He might be pitching in a month or so. Given his background as a star at South Carolina- where he underwent TJ surgery before the draft- he could open at high A Tampa, or even AA. Probably won't pitch in NY this year- but assuming rehab checks out and his stuff returns, he could be an option early in 2019.
Please tell me your joking. Time to Panic????
Tanaka's struggles in the first half last year were a big reason we lost the division to the Sox - if we don't win that Wild Card game, Tanaka doesn't even get a chance to redeem himself in October. He's a big part of our team, and it'd be nice if he pitched more like a #2, and less like a #4/#5. That's all.
Been a few weeks. How about giving it until All Star break before signing Manny.
Peter Angelos is NOT trading Machado to the Yankees. Will not happen unless we give up Torres, Frazier and Severino or something crazy - which will also not happen. The only chance is to get him in FA after the season.
Quote:
I wouldn't be opposed to giving the Orioles a good not great but good haul to get him over here early assuming his agent and Cashman have an understanding that he will resign and fill out the blank check and not visit others

I think that the O's WILL trade Machado at the deadline- but not to the Yanks. The O's desperately need a rebuild- and can at least get a couple pieces to work with in a Machado deal.
I still think the Dodgers are the most likely destination simply because they need some more offense- and don't need Machado long term because they have Turner and Seagar. They can let Machado walk at the end of the year without a second thought.
Another possibility- the Cubs. They need a change and their window might be closing as their stars get expensive and the SP isn't getting better. Machado in Wrigley might result in crazy numbers.
