Baker Mayfield

Doomster : 5/23/2018 8:03 am
I keep thinking about that pick.....The Browns did a good job of keeping this quiet, until the last 24 hours when the rumors started...

Were the Browns right in taking him with the first pick?

Will he be the best qb of this qb class?

I mean, we might not truly know for at least 5 seasons....

Did the Browns get it right this time, or are the Browns still cursed at picking qb's?

On paper, this offense looks like it can go from last to in the top 10, overnight......

But will Taylor be the qb, or will Mayfield see the field this season?

What do you think BBI?

I heard Darnold's family fully expected him to be a Brown. No idea if they were blinded by smoke or if a late change of heart had been made.

before Dorsey was hired by Cleveland he mentioned that he would take Mayfield with the first overall pick if he had it. Former Redskins GM McGloughan who was hired by the Browns as a consultant said the same thing before he was hired by Cleveland. The Browns were a joke but their new front office is very impressive so it is a bit absurd to think that the Jets swayed their decision. I think they really did like Darnold but obviously they saw something in Mayfield that they liked more. Time will tell if they were right.

Dorsey never said that. He said he had attended a number of Mayfield's games, but he did not say he would take him number one.

McGloughan did say Mayfield was his number one QB in the class.

And, to emphasize this and amend my previous post, I've found that Dorsey did speak after the draft about when he made his decision. And it was just as Chris Mortensen reported: about six weeks beforehand, after a private workout with Mayfield in Norman.

Quote:
Browns GM John Dorsey echoed Hue Jackson's sentiments that he was ultimately sold on Baker Mayfield after his private workout for the Browns on March 22.

"I personally knew when I walked away from the Norman, Oklahoma workout -- I just kept it to myself for a while,'' Dorsey said Tuesday on 92.3 The Fan. "I kind of knew but that was the moment that I said maybe, you know that 'that's the guy.'"

Darnold and Rosen better. Do not believe Mayfield’s game translates to the NFL as well as the others. He had all day to throw behind a LT that never gave up any sacks or pressures period... he had great skills guys around him whom have been drafted fairly high, year after year... he has good feet and a solid arm... but he is short and will have trouble seeing over the OL and DL from the pocket and if he has to consistently leave the pocket he will get killed on the next level... I don’t see it with him.... great college QB, jag pro QB think. Not even mentioning the immaturity on and off the field. I do love the fire he has, the swag he has... until he crosses the line like he tends to do... I believe the Browns got two bust’s with the 1st and 4th overall picks

I agree with this post. I would have taken Chubb if I were them at 4 but hey, it’s the browns

then they were absolutely right. If they picked any other player there, the Jets were almost certainly taking Mayfield at #3. So, if that's the guy they wanted then it's the right pick.
Only playing time will tell the story of Mayfield,

that and the team around him. If he finds himself surrounded by a crappy team, it won't matter.

I thought Mayfield was the most exciting QB prospect to enter the draft in a long time. And the reasons are obvious. But he also has a high bust potential. His game is dependent upon movement, and his ability to move successfully is dependent upon him having adequate athleticism relative to the defenders. In the NFL, I'm not sure he will.

The other issue is his mouth. The NY sports media piranhas would have eaten him alive.

I would never draft a QB with number 1 pick that is 6-1

the odds are too stacked
only 2 QBs 6-1 and under have won Super Bowl
Russell Wilson Drew Brees

and they are currently the only short QBs that start in NFL
I'm a Darnold guy

of the QBs. But Mayfield has the leadership qualities in spades of what I would want as a signal caller on my team, moreso than Darnold.

And it says something that he walked on to the OU football program and won the Heisman, at the QB position. There is something special about a person that does that.

It would not shock me at all to see him succeed and take the Browns to new heights.
Hmmmm very interesting

Mayfield when asked what his goal is for the upcoming season

Said he wants to be Rookie of the year, when Barkley was asked the

Same question he said he wanted to help the team win a championship

Mayfield is great QB but the chip on his shoulder may NOT play to his

advantage......

Right now, I think the best thing these young guys can do is sit & watch for a bit as the veterans play. That goes for Mayfield, Darnold, Rosen, etc.

in lieu of Barkley, Chubb and Hernandez will go down as the three biggest reaches in NFL history. Mayfield is not even as good as Tyrod Taylor. There is a reason the Browns are the Browns.

Thank you George Young, Ernie Accorsi and David Gettleman.

that if the QB was a franchise QB (and I was thinking Darnold), the Giants had to make that pick and set up the proper succession plan.

However, if the Giants were not sold on the QBs, it was not worth the risk of making that pick at #2 because not only do you bust at a QB, but also bust at the #2 pick and those types of moves set franchises back 5 years.

As the whispers came from the scouts that this batch of QBs wasn't as hot as advertised at the start of the college football season, the fact that Barkley went to the Giants might end up being one of the great steals of all time, if he turns out to be the next Marshall Faulk/ LaDanian Tomlinson.

And we discussed it on BBI and I had mentioned after the Jets trade, it is not out of the realm of possibility that the NY Jets could end up screwing themselves and the Browns, and made the Giants stronger in their move up to #3.

I think the Browns plan was to draft Barkley at #1, figure the Giants go for Darnold or Rosen, the Colts would take anyone but a QB, and they would be sitting there at #4 for Mayfield, since they knew the Giants wouldn't take Mayfield.

Once the Jets traded up to #3, they knew that Mayfield would never get past them. So they had to shuffle the deck, prioritize Mayfield over Barkley (who was the best player in this draft). That left Barkley to the Giants, who when you weigh their draft board and Gettleman saying not to overthink the #2 pick, and not talking yourself into a QB, made Barkley an easy pick.

Is it out of the realm to see a scenario where Barkley turns into one of the most dynamic offensive players in the NFL, along with Beckham and Engram and the Giants have a dangerous offense. Meanwhile, Mayfield and Darnold flounder as middling NFL QBs?

The Browns took a major risk with essentially a sure thing in Barkley and went with a boom/bust in Mayfield. If history is a guide, the Browns screwed up.
I think it's interesting that the Browns

I've been saying this all along. There's so much "either/or" nonsense posted here. If you think, it's very easy to believe that the Giants think that Eli is near done AND that none of the QBs were worth taking with their highest pick in 37 years.

Not just because they play QB but I really liked Darnold and Rosen's upside. I will admit that I was disappointed when Barkley was picked but I wasn't mad. I have said from the beginning that I would be okay with the Barkley or Chubb selection if the Giants truly didn't love any of the QB's enough to take them at 2.

Since Barkley was selected he has really won me over both on and off the field. This is the type of kid you want as the face of your franchise and he was considered by most as the best player in the draft.

Not true. He struggled mightily during his final two years in St. Louis. He also didn't play well with the Giants with the exception of the first few games. His first two years in Arizona weren't very good either.
It's not just best player, it's best fit.
81_Great_Dane : 5/23/2018 2:35 pm : link
Cleveland needs a guy like Mayfield who has some swagger and hates to lose. That won't matter if he's lousy, but if he's good and helps give that team a winning attitude, he's the right fit.

Darnold doesn't seem like the same kind of aggressive personality; he's more of a lead-by-example type. Rosen also hates to lose, and (as we saw after the draft) can be pretty vocal, but I'm sure the Browns felt his injury history made him a riskier pick than Mayfield. I know everybody thought Josh Allen would be a great fit there but he's a VERY risky pick, because his college production wasn't really that good.

It wasn't just when he was recovering from concussions. When he was hear, as I recall, he also had issue with his thumb on his throwing hand. When he got to Arizona, it was completely healed.
I will say this about Mayfield
Matt M. : 5/23/2018 4:06 pm : link
on the field, I thought he was the best QB in the draft. As the season wore on, I soured on him for the Giants because of his attitude. That is both on the sidelines and off the field. I kept picturing him as the next Manziel.
I think the offense that Shurmur ran with Keenum . . . .
TC : 5/23/2018 5:05 pm : link
at the Vikes would have been nearly ideal for Mayfield's skill set. It's not dissimilar. And I think Mayfield may have been in the Giant's picture in the event of a trade down. But Mayfield and Eli couldn't be more different. So an offense ideal for one, wouldn't be for the other.

Jints Central managed this draft, they best think about the Barkley pick is he wasn't Mayfield.

There is certainly a chance I will overdose on crow, but I feel very confident Mayfield will be, at best, a serviceable QB. And not come close to living up to his billing.

the Giants should take a QB first thing, was people were pushing it like it was their own thinking. It wasn't. Anyway, that thinking could never solve for the fact that none of the QB's were as good as Saquon at football. And since there is now a rookie cap, it doesn't make as much as it did when the rules of how you should spend your first rounders were developed.
I think the Browns did terribly
Go Terps : 5/23/2018 8:11 pm : link
to have two of the first four picks and come out with who they did...wow. They could have come out with two of Darnold/Chubb/Nelson/Barkley. They also could have not drafted a QB in that area and had Lamar Jackson with a slight trade up at the bottom of round 1.

To be able to get two of Chubb/Nelson/Barkley AND Jackson and not do it was pretty poor draft management.
I liked the pick
giantstock : 5/23/2018 8:19 pm : link
I was agreeing with Gregg Cossell, Ourlads and SY.

I thought the best two QB's were Rosen and Mayfield.

I think at least one of the QB's is going to outshine Barkley. With that said looking forward big-time of seeing a great rb along with OBJ.

Go Terps : 5/23/2018 8:24 pm : link
Nothing against him though...he seems like a good guy and I'm looking forward to watching him play. I've just got my fingers crossed that Shurmur is better than his predecessors at developing QBs. We've been spoiled by Eli's excellence, longevity, and durability. Once he's gone it's going to be a slap of reality.

I'm still disappointed but I do like Barkley. If any Qb can play well - then they have something special.

But what if you think Eli is done? If Eli is done- it's very hard to NOT being disappointed. I hope ELi shuts my mouth this year and the Giants make a run.

None of the QBs had to be better than Barkley. They just needed to be close, and since they played at a more critical position, that elevates their value to be > than Barkley's.

Furthermore, the salary cap arrangement is actually why drafting a QB high makes a ton of sense. If you hit on a QB under his rookie contract, that is a tremendous cap benefit. Looks like the Rams actually hit on Goff, right? His cap hit? $7.5M. Nice to have.

Eventually, those cap chickens will come home to roost, and the Rams will have to make some tough decisions, but that low cap hit with Goff certainly helped the Rams to be ultra aggressive in the free agency window this year...and they are ALL IN.
