I keep thinking about that pick.....The Browns did a good job of keeping this quiet, until the last 24 hours when the rumors started...
Were the Browns right in taking him with the first pick?
Will he be the best qb of this qb class?
I mean, we might not truly know for at least 5 seasons....
Did the Browns get it right this time, or are the Browns still cursed at picking qb's?
On paper, this offense looks like it can go from last to in the top 10, overnight......
But will Taylor be the qb, or will Mayfield see the field this season?
What do you think BBI?
It will be interesting to see how Manziel Pt 2 performs. I can’t imagine he will be nearly as bad as the original.

He is not Manziel part deux. He is not Russell Wilson part deux.
What he is, is the most accurate QB in the draft, with enough mobility to avoid the rush and the ability to make all the reads in the progression.
He is a rookie like all the other rookies. I think he will do well and sooner than the others.
Logic and empirical Science! would dictate Mayfield is playing in the CFL in a few years.
It is their #4 pick that has me scratching my head. A good player, for sure, but I would have taken Chubb or Roquan Smith there.
Dorsey is probably mandating his coaches incorporate spread concepts like Andy Reid did in Kansas City, so that helps him.
If he came out of a pro-style offense I wouldn’t have any doubts about Baker making it. So time will tell.
Phil Simms has repeatedly said height is not that important as even a 6'4" QB cannot see over his lineman.
The immaturity thing is, quite frankly, BS - overblown.
Rosen could do well in a place like Arizona or Miami. Problematic for the Giants.
I don't think he would have done well in NYC though. I suspect that's why the Giants dismissed him quickly (there was one report to that effect). He's better off in a less visible market, less pressured market.
Remember, the Browns chewed up and spit out Deshon Kizer after just one year. How patient will they be with Mayfield? How will losing Thomas affect the OL? what if Josh Gordon gets another suspension?
I can see the Browns becoming a 5-6 win team, which would be a rousing success for Mayfield, or they might play Taylor and suffer yet another disasterous season.

Only reason Kizer started last year was because they had absolutely no one that could start in front of him.
Taylor isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. He had absolutely no one to throw to in Buffalo and got them to the Playoffs last year.
Mayfield will end up playing sometime this year, because Taylor will get hurt, as he does every year.
Buffalo got to the playoffs on the strength of their defense and Shady McCoy, one of the most underrated backs in the game.

Backs are a dime a dozen
My only question with Mayfield, is how is he going to be when the game is on the line. Darnold had the goods under the gun, does Mayfield?

His games against Ohio State and Georgia aren't what worries me. He played in a system that doesn't translate well to the next level. It's like a 50/50 chance he makes it just because of that.
Arizona might not be a great fit as they have a new HC, a new DC, an aging WR corp and a mediocre OL.
I don't see things turning around quickly there, and David Johnson is going to have to prove he can stay healthy.

did a number on both Ohio State and Georgia through the air. That's nothing to sneeze at.

Was Oklahoma's system all that much different than what Philly runs now? Did he have to look at the sidelines after every play for the next play call? Unlike many successful college QB's, Mayfield was winning with his arm, not his legs, which is pretty rare nowadays.
https://247sports.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/Bolt/Report-NFL-executives-prefer-QB-Sam-Darnold-117324942
Former NFL General Manager Charley Casserly, now with NFL Network, polled 24 league executives to gauge the best quarterback prospect in the 2018 NFL Draft.
According to Casserly, 17 of those executives prefer USC quarterback Sam Darnold, 3 prefer Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, 2 prefer UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen and 2 prefer Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen. When he tallied the votes, from first to fourth, Darnold was first followed by Allen, Mayfield and Rosen.
I don't watch with a scouts eye, I watch with a fan's eye, however sometimes it's obvious...and to me, I have hard time seeing him failing. He's got a high floor and a much higher ceiling than most are giving him credit for.
All supposition. John Dorsey made the decision and Chris Mortensen reported that he knew who he was taking six weeks before the draft.
Haslam flew up to Wyoming and sat with Josh Allen's parents on the same trip he saw Darnold.
Alonzo Highsmith, Browns VP of Personnel, said Mayfield changed his mind during the process (away from Darnold) but it was never Highsmith's decision to make.
Unless Dorsey himself chooses to reveal more at some point, we'll never know for sure, but there is no hard evidence that he changed his own mind late in the process.

Browns were picking Darnold and then something happened. The cover story was that they were keeping it quiet but Darnold was higher on their board. Not sure exactly what drove it. I know the Jets put out a desperate We Love Baker smokescreen to try and raise his profile hoping the Browns will bite. Maybe they did? Maybe it was Haslam calling this shot? But when you have Darnold to Cleveland for months, Haslam sitting with his family at pro day, Darnold signing Browns mini helmets at the Browns facility (what agent would have him do that if he didn't have assurances) and Darnold wearing the brown tie/mother wearing brown nail polish at the draft...it's pretty clear there was a late shift and not something they were all lockstep with for weeks

Fair. But there seemed to be a lot of Darnold to Cleveland smoke until the very late hour. I think the Darnold camp was clearly told something and then something else transpired. Nobody to blame here as it's a draft and they can change their mind on the clock if they want to, but I just don't feel Dorsey knew for weeks...and I also have a hunch they were seriously considering Allen...having Tyrod it would've worked out well having him sit for two years. But Allen definitely fits the mold of the type of QB you'd want in the AFC North.
Dorsey never said that. He said he had attended a number of Mayfield's games, but he did not say he would take him number one.
McGloughan did say Mayfield was his number one QB in the class.
And, to emphasize this and amend my previous post, I've found that Dorsey did speak after the draft about when he made his decision. And it was just as Chris Mortensen reported: about six weeks beforehand, after a private workout with Mayfield in Norman.
"I personally knew when I walked away from the Norman, Oklahoma workout -- I just kept it to myself for a while,'' Dorsey said Tuesday on 92.3 The Fan. "I kind of knew but that was the moment that I said maybe, you know that 'that's the guy.'"
not a last minute - ( New Window )
I agree with this post. I would have taken Chubb if I were them at 4 but hey, it’s the browns
I thought Mayfield was the most exciting QB prospect to enter the draft in a long time. And the reasons are obvious. But he also has a high bust potential. His game is dependent upon movement, and his ability to move successfully is dependent upon him having adequate athleticism relative to the defenders. In the NFL, I'm not sure he will.
The other issue is his mouth. The NY sports media piranhas would have eaten him alive.
the odds are too stacked
only 2 QBs 6-1 and under have won Super Bowl
Russell Wilson Drew Brees
and they are currently the only short QBs that start in NFL
