Baker Mayfield

Doomster : 5/23/2018 8:03 am
I keep thinking about that pick.....The Browns did a good job of keeping this quiet, until the last 24 hours when the rumors started...

Were the Browns right in taking him with the first pick?

Will he be the best qb of this qb class?

I mean, we might not truly know for at least 5 seasons....

Did the Browns get it right this time, or are the Browns still cursed at picking qb's?

On paper, this offense looks like it can go from last to in the top 10, overnight......

But will Taylor be the qb, or will Mayfield see the field this season?

What do you think BBI?

Mayfield and Rosen are the two most accurate qb's of the top 4.
Ira : 5/23/2018 8:15 am : link
Mayfield is shorter, but Rosen is less mobile and had those two concussions. I wouldn't draft any player at any position that high who's had concussions. So the short answer is yes - he's the best of those 4 quarterbacks.
Mayfield is the best QB in the draft

From last to top ten in offense overnight with a rookie qb, after losing a All Pro LT, and no trace of offensive success in years, I wouldn’t be too sure of that.

It will be interesting to see how Manziel Pt 2 performs. I can’t imagine he will be nearly as bad as the original.
I think it was a great pick
JFIB : 5/23/2018 8:24 am : link
And Baker is the guy I was hoping we would take at #2. I think he's gonna be a star.
Apparently scouts had Mayfieldmania
Coach Red Beaulieu : 5/23/2018 8:24 am : link
What does that say about the other QBs when a less athletic Russell Wilson is the "consensus" favorite?
I think it was a short-sighted, perhaps emotional pick

He is not Manziel part deux. He is not Russell Wilson part deux.

What he is, is the most accurate QB in the draft, with enough mobility to avoid the rush and the ability to make all the reads in the progression.
He is a rookie like all the other rookies. I think he will do well and sooner than the others.
It's the Browns

Darnold and Rosen better. Do not believe Mayfield’s game translates to the NFL as well as the others. He had all day to throw behind a LT that never gave up any sacks or pressures period... he had great skills guys around him whom have been drafted fairly high, year after year... he has good feet and a solid arm... but he is short and will have trouble seeing over the OL and DL from the pocket and if he has to consistently leave the pocket he will get killed on the next level... I don’t see it with him.... great college QB, jag pro QB think. Not even mentioning the immaturity on and off the field. I do love the fire he has, the swag he has... until he crosses the line like he tends to do... I believe the Browns got two bust’s with the 1st and 4th overall picks
the other big thing is
JonC : 5/23/2018 8:55 am : link
Big 12 defenses were all but invisible. He's got to demonstrate he can overcome his lack of size and read through his progressions versus pro defenses with live bullets flying. I think he's perhaps the most pro ready in the short term, but with the least upside in the NFL.
I'm dubious that he was the best player,
Section331 : 5/23/2018 9:23 am : link
or even the best QB, in the draft, but if the Browns thought he was, they should have grabbed him. They couldn't afford to wait until 4, since the Jets were rumored to really like him as well.

It is their #4 pick that has me scratching my head. A good player, for sure, but I would have taken Chubb or Roquan Smith there.
My biggest issue with Mayfield
BigBlueDownTheShore : 5/23/2018 9:23 am : link
Is the offensive system he came out of. More often then not, spread QBs fail in the NFL. I heard over and over again that they had progressions in their offense, but how much I will never know because I am not an expert.

Dorsey is probably mandating his coaches incorporate spread concepts like Andy Reid did in Kansas City, so that helps him.

If he came out of a pro-style offense I wouldn’t have any doubts about Baker making it. So time will tell.
And I think Rosen will be the best QB
Section331 : 5/23/2018 9:24 am : link
in this draft. It is actually a perfect situation for him, as the Cards aren't that bad, and with decent QB play, could be in the playoff picture pretty quickly.
Darnold

Phil Simms has repeatedly said height is not that important as even a 6'4" QB cannot see over his lineman.

The immaturity thing is, quite frankly, BS - overblown.

I thought.

I don't think he would have done well in NYC though. I suspect that's why the Giants dismissed him quickly (there was one report to that effect). He's better off in a less visible market, less pressured market.

FatMan in Charlotte : 5/23/2018 9:56 am : link
he'll get a taste of the differences between the NCAA and the NFL right away.

Remember, the Browns chewed up and spit out Deshon Kizer after just one year. How patient will they be with Mayfield? How will losing Thomas affect the OL? what if Josh Gordon gets another suspension?

I can see the Browns becoming a 5-6 win team, which would be a rousing success for Mayfield, or they might play Taylor and suffer yet another disasterous season.

Only reason Kizer started last year was because they had absolutely no one that could start in front of him.

Taylor isn't as bad as everyone makes it out to be. He had absolutely no one to throw to in Buffalo and got them to the Playoffs last year.

Mayfield will end up playing sometime this year, because Taylor will get hurt, as he does every year.
Taylor..

is pretty bad and fell out of favor in Buffalo because of work ethic. He was replaced by Nathan Peterman for a game!!

Buffalo got to the playoffs on the strength of their defense and Shady McCoy, one of the most underrated backs in the game.

His games against Ohio State and Georgia aren't what worries me. He played in a system that doesn't translate well to the next level. It's like a 50/50 chance he makes it just because of that.

And voiced that opinion a number of times on this forum. Nothing has changed except I felt vindicated when he was taken #1 by the Browns. and that the Giants will, in hindsight, have made a mistake by not drafting him. That’s not a dig at Barkley at all. SB no doubt provides immediate results, but in 4 or 5 years if the Giants are looking to pay some merely okay free agent QB a massive deal while Rosen is, for the purposes of this argument, a bonafide franchise QB then I think it’ll be clear what the right choice should have been. Gotta play the games though, so who the hell knows.
Let's see how..
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/23/2018 10:51 am : link
Rosen handles being on a team that is going to mightily struggle.

Arizona might not be a great fit as they have a new HC, a new DC, an aging WR corp and a mediocre OL.

I don't see things turning around quickly there, and David Johnson is going to have to prove he can stay healthy.

I know the Jets put out a desperate We Love Baker smokescreen to try and raise his profile hoping the Browns will bite. Maybe they did? Maybe it was Haslam calling this shot? But when you have Darnold to Cleveland for months, Haslam sitting with his family at pro day, Darnold signing Browns mini helmets at the Browns facility (what agent would have him do that if he didn't have assurances) and Darnold wearing the brown tie/mother wearing brown nail polish at the draft...it's pretty clear there was a late shift and not something they were all lockstep with for weeks

Was Oklahoma's system all that much different than what Philly runs now? Did he have to look at the sidelines after every play for the next play call? Unlike many successful college QB's, Mayfield was winning with his arm, not his legs, which is pretty rare nowadays.

I do think Mayfield has a chance at being a good QB but I don't know if it'll happen in Cleveland. It will be up and down there for him. Not terrible, not great, but incredibly frustrating. And I think he still has a bit of growing up to do. Why is he throwing his 2c in on the Rosen drafting mistakes comment. Do you really need to go there?
Best QB in the draft
fanofthejets : 5/23/2018 11:05 am : link
FYI this is the final word on who surveyed GM's thought was the best QB in the draft. Casserly conducted it

https://247sports.com/nfl/cleveland-browns/Bolt/Report-NFL-executives-prefer-QB-Sam-Darnold-117324942

Former NFL General Manager Charley Casserly, now with NFL Network, polled 24 league executives to gauge the best quarterback prospect in the 2018 NFL Draft.

According to Casserly, 17 of those executives prefer USC quarterback Sam Darnold, 3 prefer Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield, 2 prefer UCLA quarterback Josh Rosen and 2 prefer Wyoming quarterback Josh Allen. When he tallied the votes, from first to fourth, Darnold was first followed by Allen, Mayfield and Rosen.

He was my guy for the Giants
AcesUp : 5/23/2018 11:08 am : link
Although it was glaringly obvious that we weren't interested and it became moot 24 hours before the draft when word got out that the Browns were taking him. He was by far the best QB in college last year and while he was helped by Oklahoma's system and conference, he was completely lights out. I've seen him respond well under pressure as well, so the negative about facing NFL defenses is overblown and no different than the other prospects. Outside of height, he as all the tools. He's got a strong arm, he's accurate, he's poised in the pocket, he's mobile, he's smart, he's competitive, he's great on RPOs. He checks most of the boxes. If he were an inch and a half taller he would have been the slam dunk, consensus top prospect that everybody was clamoring for.

I don't watch with a scouts eye, I watch with a fan's eye, however sometimes it's obvious...and to me, I have hard time seeing him failing. He's got a high floor and a much higher ceiling than most are giving him credit for.
Clearly, lack of defenses in the Big 12 helped but I thought
Jimmy Googs : 5/23/2018 11:11 am : link
Mayfield looked very good against Georgia in the semifinal game. They started getting to him by 4qtr but he did well against one of the better defenses in the country.

All supposition. John Dorsey made the decision and Chris Mortensen reported that he knew who he was taking six weeks before the draft.

Haslam flew up to Wyoming and sat with Josh Allen's parents on the same trip he saw Darnold.

Alonzo Highsmith, Browns VP of Personnel, said Mayfield changed his mind during the process (away from Darnold) but it was never Highsmith's decision to make.

Unless Dorsey himself chooses to reveal more at some point, we'll never know for sure, but there is no hard evidence that he changed his own mind late in the process.

Fair. But there seemed to be a lot of Darnold to Cleveland smoke until the very late hour. I think the Darnold camp was clearly told something and then something else transpired. Nobody to blame here as it's a draft and they can change their mind on the clock if they want to, but I just don't feel Dorsey knew for weeks...and I also have a hunch they were seriously considering Allen...having Tyrod it would've worked out well having him sit for two years. But Allen definitely fits the mold of the type of QB you'd want in the AFC North.
People Say That All These QBs Have Flaws
Giants34 : 5/23/2018 11:23 am : link
How many QBs coming out of college don't have flaws? You guys act as if the next crop of QB prospects, or the one after that, or even the one after that will feature QB prospects that are not flawed. It's ridiculous. And even if a QB prospect that is not flawed comes along, we'll need the first overall pick to get him, and it is exceedingly unlikely we'll have that pick. So, at some point, we'll need to accept a QB prospect with some flaws and hope that the flaws are correctable. But apparently all of BBI needs a perfect prospect to deem that QB worth drafting in the first round. Meanwhile, Sy graded Rosen as the best QB prospect to come along in years. Even that wasn't good enough. And we passed on him for a RB. What more do you guys want?

before Dorsey was hired by Cleveland he mentioned that he would take Mayfield with the first overall pick if he had it. Former Redskins GM McGloughan who was hired by the Browns as a consultant said the same thing before he was hired by Cleveland. The Browns were a joke but their new front office is very impressive so it is a bit absurd to think that the Jets swayed their decision. I think they really did like Darnold but obviously they saw something in Mayfield that they liked more. Time will tell if they were right.

Dorsey never said that. He said he had attended a number of Mayfield's games, but he did not say he would take him number one.

McGloughan did say Mayfield was his number one QB in the class.

And, to emphasize this and amend my previous post, I've found that Dorsey did speak after the draft about when he made his decision. And it was just as Chris Mortensen reported: about six weeks beforehand, after a private workout with Mayfield in Norman.

Quote:
Browns GM John Dorsey echoed Hue Jackson's sentiments that he was ultimately sold on Baker Mayfield after his private workout for the Browns on March 22.

"I personally knew when I walked away from the Norman, Oklahoma workout -- I just kept it to myself for a while,'' Dorsey said Tuesday on 92.3 The Fan. "I kind of knew but that was the moment that I said maybe, you know that 'that's the guy.'"

that and the team around him. If he finds himself surrounded by a crappy team, it won't matter.

I thought Mayfield was the most exciting QB prospect to enter the draft in a long time. And the reasons are obvious. But he also has a high bust potential. His game is dependent upon movement, and his ability to move successfully is dependent upon him having adequate athleticism relative to the defenders. In the NFL, I'm not sure he will.

The other issue is his mouth. The NY sports media piranhas would have eaten him alive.

the odds are too stacked
only 2 QBs 6-1 and under have won Super Bowl
Russell Wilson Drew Brees

and they are currently the only short QBs that start in NFL
