Shepard is a special teams signing first, a WR second. He was second on the team in special teams tackles in Carolina, had 14 with the Bucs two years ago. Sometimes you have to see the forest through the trees. The opportunities are not going to be there for WRs in this offense beyond the big names. So you need guys on 53 who can contribute in other ways on game day, not watch.
Cody Latimer and Russell Shepard might be those guys

A few thoughts following #Jaguars OTA 1:
1) BB5 looked sharp with accuracy, good touch on deep balls
2) Cody Davis could have a bigger role in the secondary than most envisioned, looked good in his "pajamas" reps (#PostMarrone uses the p word when discussing non-padded prax)
3) Rashad Greene has probably heard the roster bubble noise, he put on a "difficult catch clinic" this morning
4) ASJ looked like a JT today as a pass catcher
5) Fournette does look svelte as previously reported, looked smooth today
6) Logan Cooke nailed the roof at least 8 times

I think M. Kendricks can play. He'll be good somewhere else. Have been surprised Eagles couldn't get anything in trade, but I imagine the contract had something to do with it. But if Hicks/Bradham are injured this year, this decision will be in the spotlight.

Zach Berman (@ZBerm)
5/22/18, 7:35 PM
The argument that Mychal Kendricks was going to be the No.3 LB on a team that plays 70% of snaps in sub packages and his price did not justify that role is valid. (He’d make same argument.) The argument that Kendricks wasn’t a productive player is less valid and a rationalization

Giants Training Camp Previews from prior years

1979 New Beginnings

7-23-1979
Katz NYT: Perkins Has 5 to Pick From
“PLEASANTVILLE. N.Y., July 13 — Phil Simms sat on a couch in the music room of Pace University Student Center today and said he expected to be “sitting on the bench when the first eame comes around.”
Rookies, even first& #8208;round draft choices, mind their manners on opening day of a National Football League training camp, and especially a camp that opened with more veterans than rookies. Only 12 Giant veterans, including Gordon Gravelle, the starting offensive tackle who has announced his retirement, failed to report to the rookie head coach, Ray Perkins.
That meant 37 veterans, including the four quarterbacks Simms will battle for the starting berth he does not expect to win so easily, were in their dormitories a week early, along with the 36 rookies who had to check in.
“The coach said he would like us here if we would like to be here,” said Harry Carson, the Pro Bowl middle linebacker celebrating a four& #8208;year contract that brings him up to the $100,000& #8208;a& #8208;season tax bracket. “That's some way to put it.”

Five Weeks Instead of Four

“It was not a demand& #8208;type of invitation,” said Perkins. “I told them that if we can start out with as many of them here as possible, that gives us five weeks of camp instead of four weeks.”
Perkins has much to do beside choose three quarterbacks from among Simms, Joe Pisarcik, Jerry Golsteyn, Randy Dean and Fred Besana, and then make one a starter for the league opener in Philadelphia Sept. 2.
“I've got a good idea of the first two, based on what I've seen so far,” said the coach. But he would not name the one besides Simms, saying, “That could very well change.”
Pisarcik, the incumbent starter, who is about 15 pounds trimmer than he was at Perkins's first of three minicamps, was more upset about not having Doug Kotar, his roommate, in camp than the possible slight by the coach.
“It gets lonely,” said Pisarcik. “I need someone to complain to.”

Grueling Camp Expected

Perkins does not appear like the kind of coach players will be able to complain to. The 37& #8208;year& #8208;old coach has almost intimidated the veterans with his intensity and the promise of what they know will be a grueling camp, unlike those run by Perkins's predecessor, John McVay.
Perkins inherited a last& #8208;place team, a team that has had only two winning seasons in 16 years, a team with more than just a quarterback problem. Replacing Troy Archer, the defensive tackle killed in an auto accident June 22, and Gravelle are just two of the other ones.
Perkins and his nine& #8208;man staff will have only until Aug. 16 to solve these problems here. Then, with still two of four preseason games remaining, the team will break camp and set up headquarters at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
The only physical activity today was the annual 12& #8208;minute run and Dean, the 2& #8208;to& #8208;5 favorite, won easily, covering 8& #8532; laps of the quarter& #8208;mile track. Gary Shirk, the tight end, was second with 7 7/8 laps.”
