NFT: 5-Guys Voted America's Favorite Burger Joint

pjcas18 : 5/23/2018 11:25 am
over In-N-Out, Shake Shack, Smashburger, etc.

I will preface this by saying I haven't had a fast food or expensive fast food, or whatever they call it these days, burger in about 10 years.

I lived across the street from the original 5-guys in Arlington, VA in the mid 90's and would go there occasionally. I thought it was ok, nothing special, fries were so greasy I felt like I needed to take a shower after eating them. But the burgers were cooked to order and they had a lot of toppings. People valued that as unique IMO vs fast food and they started to get a decent following and expanded.

but I know this topic generates some good discussion, mainly because In-N-Out has some loyal fans. If it's any consolation it seems like the author is indicating 5-guys wins because they're more widely accessible.

One salient quote:

Quote:
....“In-N-Out has slipped from its high. The other players are claiming mind and market share. Five Guys has expanded at a much faster rate. In-N-Out has taken a slower approach to expansion, and its locations are geographically contiguous — mostly on the West Coast,” he said.

Thirty years after Five Guys first opened, there are nearly 1,500 locations globally and another 1,500 in development. Five Guys operates across the U.S. as well as in the UK, Spain, Portugal, France and Germany.

In contrast, In-N-Out operates around 330 locations in six states — California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Oregon. The company has plans to open as many as 50 locations in Colorado over the next several years. While the affordable brand has cultivated a strong, loyal following, most consumers haven’t had a chance to try the food.

“Familiarity holds In-N-Out Burger back in the standings as a majority of consumers “just know the name” of the brand (35%),” according to Kanpurwala.

There is a wide pricing disparity between the two brands. A burger at Five Guys starts at $7 while you can grab one at In-N-Out for $2.10. Kanpurwala noted that pricing does play a factor, but doesn’t translate to less brand power.

“Five Guys is a lot more expensive than In-N-Out, but that doesn’t come through in many of our metrics. Five Guys actually comes ahead of In-N-Out when it comes to future consideration, or whether you would return for more. So that was a very surprising finding.” ...

I didn't realize
Pete in MD : 5/23/2018 11:36 am : link
5 Guys had grown that much. In-and-Outs are still all company owned, they don't franchise, and I think the family has had internal disputes about trying to open East Coast locations. I think the name is well-known enough that they would be successful anywhere. And Americans love our burgers and fries.
Pete, that's exactly why they expand very slowly
Greg from LI : 5/23/2018 11:43 am : link
In-N-Out won't franchise because they are fanatic about quality control. They have two distribution centers, and since they never freeze anything, they would have to build an East Coast distribution center if they were to expand here.
I like 5 Guys...
Dunedin81 : 5/23/2018 11:44 am : link
the price is an issue, but it just means it's a less frequent stop. I also enjoyed Smashburger when I tried it; while the basic burger is better at 5 Guys it's more customizable at Smashburger and the options for sides are better.

Maybe I had a bad experience with Cookout but that burger was one of the worst foods I've ever consumed. Way overcooked, not juicy at all. Was pretty drunk too and I couldn't bring myself to eating more than 3 bites. It was Columbia, SC.

I love 5 Guys. Juicy burgers and toppings are killer. best jalapenos.

how our local 5-guys stays open. I no zero people who go there.

That and Subway. No idea how Subways stay in business.

Subway in the northeast (specifically) since there are so many mom and pop sub shops/delis that blow away Subway.

It's not any faster most of the time, the quality is worse, and maybe it's a buck or two cheaper, but I can't believe that's always enough of a draw to justify them or make them profitable.

Greg from LI : 5/23/2018 11:58 am : link
Their franchise licenses are cheap and they'll sell them to just about anyone (as opposed to someone like Chik-Fil-A who has an acceptance rate about like Harvard when it comes to applying for a franchise), which is why their quality control is terrible. They consequently have an enormous amount of churn in their franchises - they constantly have bunches of them opening and bunches going out of business.

It's hard for me to compare - by price.

My sub shop/local delis are a little more expensive, it's usually $8 or $9 for a large sub, but like you said that large sub is massive and could feed a family. Subway is all pre-measured and disgusting.

Not sure how anyone could prefer 5 Guys over Shake Shack. We have 5Gs, SS and Smashburger about the same distance on the Island and the only one l go to is Shake Shack. The lines never 30 minutes - I probably wait 10 - 12 minutes from door to tray and the quality is outstanding - I’ve never gotten a bad burger or fries from Shake Shack. The 5Gs I’ve been to on Long Island have all been pretty dingy and unappetizing. The burger is okay - something I might get at buddy’s cook out or a preseason tailgate - dry - and why do they have to serve 5 pounds of French fries? Does anyone finish an order of 5 Guys fries? Is the point to waste food? Don’t really see how they win any awards. Smashburger is just too greasy and their fries are too greasy and too thin. Shack me up or get me to the Chik.

That's the only way a place like Subway competes in markets like NYC, on cost. There's no way you're walking into the average deli here and coming out with a 'foot long sub' for anything close to $5.

Of course, there's no comparison in quality either. Just because it's cheaper doesn't mean I'm going to start buying my sandwiches at 7-11, but for some people they might not have the means to eat better.

most of their locations are in the DC area, but they are also in Yonkers and Rye, with a few spots in Eastern PA.

Subway's are commonly found in gas stations. I can't think of many places less-appealing than that to get a sub.

The cold cuts are usually wet and slimy and everything is super processed. Almost any local deli should be able to provide a better hero/sub.

For the extra 3 or 4 bucks, it's a no-brainer.

Most bars get their food from Sysco that is frozen patties and the like. Hell, if you go to a pizza joint and get chicken fingers or mozzerella sticks, you are often getting them straight from a freezer box.

Finding a bar that makes it owns burgers, unless it is a brewpub that does most things from scratch is a tough thing to find

Heck, I'm in the sub abyss down here and if I get a sub that isn't at a Mom and Pop place, it is at Publix. They crush any Subway, Quizno's or Blimpie by far.

I miss Italian grocers. There are a couple here, but they don't do, say $3 subs to go.

5 Guys is definetely better than in-N-out..

Smashburger and Shake Shack are also really good.. but lets not make it seems like in-N-out is good.. its the worst of the bunch.. still good but the other 3 are better..

Is overrated. And so is shake shack. Smashburger blows both of them away.

Hes easy to ignore. And I use the recipes for some of the things I make when watching the show. The concept of the show is great. The food looks amazing. Well guy is an ass - but you throw him out and just look at the food - its worth it.
Guy the person...
FatMan in Charlotte : 5/23/2018 2:19 pm : link
seems like an ass, but he's at least good at detailing the stops on Diners, Drive-in's and Dives.

Some of these hosts are like watching paint dry and just come off as awkward.

At least Guy keeps the show moving along and you get to see how a lot of the recipes are made.

He's annoying, but it's entertaining enough. And frankly, I've stopped at a number of the places profiled on the show and I've never been disappointed.

but in fact the show is promoting great small restaurants where the choices are probably only fast food

he is doing a great service educating the public

Never been there, but I see theyir Prices are a lot lower, In and Out is a different category really - it’s competition is McDonalds, Burger King etc.

Guy Fieri looks like the shitty lost member of Smash Mouth.

I can't stand him.

A lot of the spots he visits are great, though. He's hard to ignore and get around but if you can, it's usually a pretty good watch.
never been, not a fast food fan, but my kids like it.

Fuddruckers if you can find one these days is my favorite. If anyone lived near Paramus, the Dairy Queen on Rt. 4 had the best burgers and fries back in the day.

I just wish they'd have someone else host that show. I can't stand listening to him.

And yes, someone else could do it, and probably not be as annoying in the process. But it is his niche, and a lot of people - me included - will watch even if it takes enduring him because people like food and travel and especially food travel, and it is family friendly.

Funny. I just got home from a trip tdown Di Bella’s. Chain or not, it’s my favorite sub place. Not broke but I guess I can’t judge my own palate quality so won’t argue that.

with Guy. My friend and I paid big bucks to attend the 2011 Super Bowl pregame tailgate hosted by Tony Siragusa and Guy Fieri. Goose was there and was great to speak with Guy however was a no show. We later see him at the game and asked where he was and he said other commitments. WTF.

why would anyone pay good money to see Tony Siragusa and Guy Fieri?

Never tried Shake Shack or IN N Out

Bubba : 5/23/2018 4:35 pm : link
It was a pregame party. Maxim magazine was co hosting with a bunch of hot models as well. Honestly it was a blast. The night before we went to party hosted by Peyton Manning. Katie Perry was the entertainment. We sat next to Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett. Great weekend.
eh, your mileage may vary
Greg from LI : 5/23/2018 4:37 pm : link
None of that sounds remotely appealing to me, especially not if it came with a high price tag. The fuck would I want to be around Jerry Jones and Jason Garrett for?
Best burgers I've had in the past few years were from:
shockeyisthebest8056 : 5/23/2018 4:59 pm : link
- Shake Shack
- Chili's (I was shocked how good it was)

The first time I went to 5 Guys, I loved it. One opened recently near my home and I don't know if I overrated them initially or this one just isn't as good, but I'm down on 5 Guys. My local Wendy's is better than my local 5 Guys.
I was excited when a 5-Guys opened about 7 blocks from me
Matt M. : 5/23/2018 5:00 pm : link
The one and only time I went, I got sick to my stomach. I never returned and that location closed within about 6 months.
BareBurger??
ColHowPepper : 5/23/2018 6:19 pm : link
Went there (Mt. Kisco, NY) first time a couple of weeks ago, went back after a game on Monday: lots of beers on tap, "basic" burgers similar price point to Five Guys, 8oz patty, pickles, cheese (American is standard on the American burger) with a McD similar sauce, nice bun and good fries. Burgers are good, the sauce has some zing, and of course the IPAs (Ballast Point, Lagunitas) and lagers.

May not be exactly in the same category as the OP but worthy of consideration. Also has salads and veggie burgers. A chain in its infancy, I think.
Teddy's Bigger Burger is an excellent burger chain here in Hawaii
jcp56 : 5/23/2018 6:49 pm : link
Their Volcano Burger is awesome. I think they are opening some locations on the mainland.

I liked Shake Shack (in Baltimore) >> 5 Guys, which is slightly better than In and Out (which was pretty good, and much less $$ than any of the others, but over rated as well).

Jeez.. Fuddruckers. My uncle took me my cousins there after Knicks/Bulls way back in the early 90's. Was my first live sporting event. I haven't seen one around in a long, long time.

There are a bunch of Fuddruckers here in Texas...
lono801 : 5/23/2018 8:19 pm : link
But trying to get a medium rare burger out of them...you just about have to sign a waiver form over food poisoning. I like Fuddruckers...good burger

And you can get a fried egg on your burger there...I’ll go to any burger joint that offers a fried egg

Whataburger has a cult like following in Texas...some are better than others. Which makes no sense...I have had great Whataburger and bad Whataburger.

I’m not a ketchup guy...but the Whataburger Spicy Ketchup is awesome. It’s not as good as Heinz Jalapeño Ketchup but close.

I have eaten 5 Guys twice...it was a good burger.

Smash was good as well.

I like 5 Guys in my town (Centreville, VA) but if I am craving a burger, I go to Foster's Grill, home of the Charburger. Plus, they do a tap takeover twice a month.
Fudruckers is criminally underrated in this country

Five Guys is ok
Hades07 : 5/24/2018 11:16 am : link
Shake Shake makes a superior burger though. Never been to in and out or smashburger so I can't comment.

By far the best burger is available at Fuddruckers. Provided of course you go to one run by a good Franchisee. Wildly inconsistent from one area to another. All franchises and very little involvement from above. But if done right, no-one beats their burgers IMO.

I don't recall any Five Guys in Brooklyn, aside from the burger chain that was well established before they opened their first location here.

My favorite used to be my own burger...
Dan in the Springs : 5/24/2018 6:25 pm : link
couldn't buy a better one, imo.

However, Smashburger changed my mind. The way they season their beef and then sear it gives it such great flavor. The rest of the burger is however you want it.

Anyone ever had a Freddy's Steakburger? They're pretty good too.

Basically for a burger to be at/near the top of my list, it has to be customizable with very fresh toppings, a quality bun, and the beef must be seasoned well.

5 guys gets only part of that right, imo. The beef isn't anything special.
Freddy’s is a good burger
