....“In-N-Out has slipped from its high. The other players are claiming mind and market share. Five Guys has expanded at a much faster rate. In-N-Out has taken a slower approach to expansion, and its locations are geographically contiguous — mostly on the West Coast,” he said. Thirty years after Five Guys first opened, there are nearly 1,500 locations globally and another 1,500 in development. Five Guys operates across the U.S. as well as in the UK, Spain, Portugal, France and Germany. In contrast, In-N-Out operates around 330 locations in six states — California, Texas, Arizona, Nevada, Utah and Oregon. The company has plans to open as many as 50 locations in Colorado over the next several years. While the affordable brand has cultivated a strong, loyal following, most consumers haven’t had a chance to try the food. “Familiarity holds In-N-Out Burger back in the standings as a majority of consumers “just know the name” of the brand (35%),” according to Kanpurwala. There is a wide pricing disparity between the two brands. A burger at Five Guys starts at $7 while you can grab one at In-N-Out for $2.10. Kanpurwala noted that pricing does play a factor, but doesn’t translate to less brand power. “Five Guys is a lot more expensive than In-N-Out, but that doesn’t come through in many of our metrics. Five Guys actually comes ahead of In-N-Out when it comes to future consideration, or whether you would return for more. So that was a very surprising finding.” ... |
I have been to others that have been suspect. If run right, 5 guys can make a mean burger.
Maybe I had a bad experience with Cookout but that burger was one of the worst foods I've ever consumed. Way overcooked, not juicy at all. Was pretty drunk too and I couldn't bring myself to eating more than 3 bites. It was Columbia, SC.
I love 5 Guys. Juicy burgers and toppings are killer. best jalapenos.
I have and truth be told - it wasnt bad.

Our does, with the quarter pound burgers.
It's definitely an improvement.
My buddy ran a dozen 5 guys in the east coast. His franchise was ranked 2nd in the nation. He left because corporate took over and bought those 12. He didnt like feeling of being told what to do.
I am fond of Five Guys - excellent fries, too, especially since they give you a wheel barrow full.
Small shout out to Smashburger. Take my son their quite a bit...

Beef patty wise I like 5 guys to smash but they have good chicken and turkey options.
That and Subway. No idea how Subways stay in business.
Subway in the northeast (specifically) since there are so many mom and pop sub shops/delis that blow away Subway.
It's not any faster most of the time, the quality is worse, and maybe it's a buck or two cheaper, but I can't believe that's always enough of a draw to justify them or make them profitable.

I find subway expensive as hell compared to the mom and pop shops. We have a sub place by my school that ordering a small is your meal for the day and its cheaper than subway.
I've never been, every time they go in to Boston now, they tell me they wait in line for 30 minutes to go to Shake Shack. I shake my head and feel old. They don't go into the city very often, but when they do the highlight is fast food.
I guess it's burgers and shakes. Not 100% sure.
Them and Chick-Fil-A always a line at Chick-Fil-A when I drive by.

Then you have unusually cheap mom and pop places. I don't eat at Subway, but it IS cheap, and definitely cheaper than independent sandwich places around here (that nevertheless have infinitely better sandwiches).
Love Shake Shack. I usually enjoy their food more than the Mets whenever I go to Citi Field.

It's hard for me to compare - by price.
My sub shop/local delis are a little more expensive, it's usually $8 or $9 for a large sub, but like you said that large sub is massive and could feed a family. Subway is all pre-measured and disgusting.
In N Out is my favorite burger from fast food.
Re: Chik-Fil-A - I live in northern Virginia, near Dulles airport, and there are four of them within five miles of me. And I swear the traffic in their drive thrus is akin to the traffic on the Beltway. They must be making money hand over fist...

Their franchise licenses are cheap and they'll sell them to just about anyone (as opposed to someone like Chik-Fil-A who has an acceptance rate about like Harvard when it comes to applying for a franchise), which is why their quality control is terrible. They consequently have an enormous amount of churn in their franchises - they constantly have bunches of them opening and bunches going out of business.

Same in NYC, people love fried chicken.
Agreed. Delicious burgers and the best value in fast food. Plus Cheerwine is awesome.
Well, most of us live on the East Coast and don't have that option, so...
You've been on a diet? :)

Some of the local establishments in NEPA are insanely cheap. You can find NY quality large pizzas for 9 dollars. You can get a full breakfast for 3-4 dollars. Its why I am fat and happy and not broke.
5 guys has about 10 times the number of locations. People don’t vote for things they’ve never eaten.
Just like anything else, some locations are better than others and it can be hit or miss, but I did really like the one that I frequented in college.
That's the only way a place like Subway competes in markets like NYC, on cost. There's no way you're walking into the average deli here and coming out with a 'foot long sub' for anything close to $5.
Of course, there's no comparison in quality either. Just because it's cheaper doesn't mean I'm going to start buying my sandwiches at 7-11, but for some people they might not have the means to eat better.
