One of my favorite Shurmur stats is he runs 61% of the time on 1st down. Leads the NFL. Then he daggers you with play action. He will not have Eli audibling out of run plays on 1st down because whether they're stopped or not, whether it's against the ideal front or not, he is setting up his play action game.
I do love Fournette though. What a perfect Tom Coughlin RB. I wonder where he'd rank Fred Taylor, Jacobs, Bradshaw and Fournette.
If teams feel they can handle our OL straight up, they will play to take away the slants and the seam route and hope that they can stop the run with a standard set.
We didn't see a lot of 8 man boxes last year, which in part is what led to decent rushing stats for Gallman and Darkwa.
The Barkley pick may be a long term problem if we end up in QB hell, but this will be (at least on paper) the most balanced Giants offense in a LONG time.
In terms of 8-man boxes, the receivers & even the QB don't matter. That's the beauty of a run heavy offense. You have no choice but to drop the S down or the offense will simply run over you with battering ram, A+ RB's.
It's a choice. You won't find many DC's willing to get throttled with the running game. They'll take their chances making a QB complete go routes.
Neither the Jags nor Bears had a legit WR or TE threat. That caused the stacked box. Good luck stacking the box and leaving your CB's and Safeties 1 on 1 with the likes of OBJ, Shep, and Engram.
be fantastic news if the Giants saw a lot of 8 man boxes. Would mean A. They can't stop the run with 7
B. Some combination of Odell/Shep/Engram are going to have great matchups.

What were NFL defensive coordinators worried about on that Dallas offense that would prevent putting 8 in the box?
Elliott didn't have 1000 yards

Kinda lame since he had 983. I would be interested to see.

Agreed
Accept Darkwa saw the 5th most 8 man boxes last season. So this comment is completely off.
you have to look at the teams other skill positions - particularly in the passing game. Fournette played with Bortles and receivers who didn't scare anyone. Of course defenses played 8 in the box. It'll be interesting to see how teams defend the Giants with both OBJ and Barkley, not to mention Shepard and Engram.
Jax (Fournette), Bears (Howard), and Buff (McCoy), all had weak passing games so why not. I can't explain Ingram unless maybe the teams expected a run when he was in (vs Kamara). Anyway, with Eli, OBJ, etc., I'm not sure SB will be up there.
Also it makes sense Gallman was near the bottom. What defense worried about the Giants running game with the OL and RB's we had? They took away the short passes and blitzed like hell to get to Eli.
RE: It all has to do with the defenses respect for the passing game Â

The Ingram results are odd. But this is sort of hard to digest because there are variables.
When were the teams in 8 man fronts during the game? Were teams using 8 man fronts in games when the Saints were ahead and trying to milk the clock? If that's the case, that stat is skewed due to circumstances...
Giants will see a lot of 8 man boxes. Jax and chi had no receivers and ineffective or rookie qb play.
Barkley is a receiving threat as well and teams will not leave Beckham Shepard and engram in one on one.
And Barkley is a totally different back than Fournette who is a grinder - so don’t see teams looking to creep up on Giant o with a guy like Beckham out there.
Interesting, you didn't use this line of thinking when you said without doubt the OL is fixed because resources were thrown at it. Both have a 'wait and see' approach, no?
I think I said the OL is "fixed enough", meaning for 2018 and replacements at several positions should sustain an improved offense. Put me in the camp of little confidence that Flowers or the others are a solution at Right Tackle so look for that solution next offseason...along with likely upgrade at Center.
Of course, there is wait and see but that makes for un-interesting posts. Is that what you want to read on every thread...

If Barkley sees anywhere near that Eli and Beckham will have a field day.
I think we only see him carry the ball 15 times per game...but he will have 6-7 passes thrown his way in addition. From the backfield and slot.

Well Gurley's team's passing game is fantastic. So, they couldn't afford to load the box on every play.
The Barkley pick may be a long term problem if we end up in QB hell, but this will be (at least on paper) the most balanced Giants offense in a LONG time.

They had outstanding WR's with Plax/Toomer/Steve Smith but faced a ton of 8-man fronts because of that running game. Earth, Wind and Fire.
B. Some combination of Odell/Shep/Engram are going to have great matchups.
He was suspended is most likely why

Missing 6 games put a dent in that a bit.

Having the RBs for the Jax and Bears makes sense since neither team will be confused with Air Coryell...
8 men in the box - ( New Window )
Even more interesting, is that Darkwa was 5th on the list. Maybe if we had a WR or 2 to throw to last year our offense wouldn't have been so putrid.
For this reason I don't expect us to see anything like 40%.
We had one weappn, any decent DC can game plan and counter a one dimensional offense.

In terms of team totals, the Giants saw the 19th most 8 man fronts, which is below average.
I would have loaded up to stop the run, if the only viable catching threats were Shepard and or Engram.

lol. That’s always easy to say after the fact. I bet a lot of teams are saying the same thing about Kareem Hunt
Ha ha, agreed. I think most teams used a 2 in the box scheme to shut down our running "attack" (and i use that word very loosely)

FYI, I don't find coversations using the wait and see logic less interesting.
