Giants Training Camp Previews from prior years
1974 Pickets and Pigskins; New Coaches and New Leagues
AP 7-09-1974
“The Giants have four quarterbacks in camp—Hart, Carl Summerall, a fourth& #8208;round draft choice from East Carolina, Bobby Stewart and Leo Gasienica. If the season were to open this weekend, , with. Norman Snead and Randy Johnson still on strike, Hart probably would be No. 1.
The fact that Johnson has signed a contract with the Honolulu Hawaiians of the World Football League for 1975 also means that Arnsparger will be looking for another talented young arm.
“When I first saw him at the Senior Bowl game a few years ago,” Arnsparger recalled, “he was real thin, like a pencil. He's filled out now, and he's willing to listen and learn. Maybe this is his turn.”
Five New York Giants football players set up a picket line at the gate to the Giants rookie training camp today as part of the National Football League Players Association strike. The free agents had arrived overnight and were on the Fairfield University campus when the pickets arrived at 10 a.m. The demonstrators were led by Charlie Evans, Giants’ player representative, who said they were at the gate to persuade players to stay out of the camp “by talking.” He said, “If they want to walk in, there is nothing we can do to stop them.” One unidentified player arrived at the gate and asked, “Is this free agent day?” Picketer Dan Goich said “It is. Are you going in? I’d like to talk to you first.” After a quiet discussion, the player walked into camp. In addition to Goich and Evans, the picketers included safety Carl “Spider” Lockhart, defensive end Carter Campbell and defensive tackle Rich Glover. Coach Bill Arnsparger said he will give the veterans a chance to speak to the rookies sometime today or Wednesday. Interviewed before the picketing began Arnsparger said he still hoped the Giants veterans would arrive on Sunday. He said strikers would not be penalized when he fills positions on the team. “I’m not going to make up my mind on anybody unless it helps
us have a good football team.” Evans said the strikers would picket until noon and 2 to 4 p.m. today and return daily. At the university the first of 50 rookies and free agents were getting room assignments, meeting coaches and having physicals. They will begin “strength tests” at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Thursday will be the first day in protection pads, Arnsparger said. Giants’ veterans aren’t due officially at pre-season camp until next Sunday, with workouts slated for Monday. At full strength, the Giants’ pre-season roster is expected to number 04 players. Newcomers slated to be there include Roy Hilton, a 6-foot-6, 240-pound defensive end from the Baltimore Colts. He was obtained in an off-season trade for running back Joe Orduna and a draft choice. Quarterback Leo Hart, 6-foot-4, 213 pounds, a three-year veteran acquired from the Buffalo Bills for a draft choice also is among the new personalities on the Giants roster. The club also has a new head coach, former Miami Dolphin assistant coach Bill Arnsparger. He and his assistant coachds met Monday at the university. The Giants, who held their preseason camp at Fairfield in the ’60s, left in 1969 for other sites in the metropolitan New York areas, feeling they would be closer to Yankee Stadium. Then extensive renovation began at the stadium, shutting it down until 1976; and the Giants decided to move to a proposed sports complex in New Jersey.”
