NFT: New York Mets @ Milwaukee Brewers - Game 1

arcarsenal : 5/24/2018 8:14 pm
I have no idea why I continue to subject myself to death by a thousand paper cuts watching this team every night - but here I am again.

Nimmo led off with a double for us.

Lineup:

1. Brandon Nimmo (L) LF
2. Asdrubal Cabrera (S) 2B
3. Wilmer Flores (R) 3B
4. Jay Bruce (L) RF
5. Michael Conforto (L) CF
6. Devin Mesoraco (R) C
7. Adrian Gonzalez (L) 1B
8. Steven Matz (R) P
9. Amed Rosario (R) SS

Milwaukee is playing much, much better since we last saw them. This is going to be a really tough series. I'd probably consider a split a "success."
Nimmo has
Metnut : 5/24/2018 8:15 pm : link
play every day this year. We dont have enough good players to bench him even when completely healthy.
.
arcarsenal : 5/24/2018 8:16 pm : link
All he does is get on base. He should be leading off every night.
.
arcarsenal : 5/24/2018 8:19 pm : link
Just getting absolutely nothing out of the cleanup spot. Bruce has been fucking awful.
Brutal offensive team

Beyond brutal. Have a couple guys mashing the shit out of the ball in Bing and can't be bothered to see if they'll help.

Cabrera is the only guy who deserves to be in the lineup every single day right now. Probably Nimmo too because he's getting on base so well.

Rosario has tons of work to do. Conforto still doesn't look like himself. Cespedes is hurt as always and Frazier is also sidelined. Reyes has been awful. AGone is pretty washed. Not even going to mention Bautista.

Like I said in the other thread - I just don't think Sandy Alderson is any good at constructing a strong MLB lineup. We had two of the best hitters in baseball and he let both go (Turner/Murphy) and a lot of his signings have been fucking trash.
.
arcarsenal : 5/24/2018 8:55 pm : link
Nimmo again. Triple this time.

This should earn him a benching ASAP.
Jay Bruce typo?
giantsFC : 5/24/2018 8:56 pm : link
Me thinks you meant Jason Bay...

Conforto is who I was worried he was. I was a firm Believer that he was more likely to be his 2016 form than his 2017 form, especially after the freak shoulder issue. Seems very streaky to me. A Jeff Franceur type. One great year followed by a bad year etc.

This team has sucked balls since and been painful to watch offensively for at least 10 years. Possibly 15. outside of Cespedes moment of glory and Murphy roid binge.
.
arcarsenal : 5/24/2018 9:03 pm : link
I wanted Lorenzo Cain instead of Bruce.

Cain has been quite a bit better so far.
Nice stretch by AGON
MetsAreBack : 5/24/2018 9:04 pm : link
On the close play at first. How much are we paying this fucking guy?
.
arcarsenal : 5/24/2018 9:13 pm : link
Nice job by Matz to get out of the jam - but a few easy innings would be nice to see once in a while. Seems like he's constantly in trouble.
Too many hitters struggling right now...
ZGiants98 : 5/24/2018 9:21 pm : link
Have to think Long would have had Conforto and Bruce out of their slumps by now... We desperately need Frazier, Cespedes, and Plawecki back. Looks like all three should be back by the end of next week. Frazier started running today, Plawecki is already playing games in Vegas, and Cespedes took batting practice today hitting a few bombs.

Good news is the pitching is completely smoothing out. Wheeler has a 3.99 FIP on the season. Matz still isn't there but seems to be able to at least battle. Of course Vargas is coming off 5 shutout innings.

Im a fan of the pitching. We just need to get the bats going somehow, some way.
.
arcarsenal : 5/24/2018 9:24 pm : link
Pitching seems to be finding its legs - we are getting competitive starts now compared to that stretch of two or three 4-inning starts for the most part.

But the hitting is just brutal, man. Completely non-existent. We just cannot score runs.
Im thinking about how we could improve the lineup
ZGiants98 : 5/24/2018 9:31 pm : link
And it's still really only catcher or first base. A Realmuto trade would be an obvious upgrade even still. Trading for somebody like Justin Bour would be too although we do sort of have a glut of 1B options on the horizon and AGone hasn't been "terrible".

Other than those two spots I dont know what we can do. Somebody like Conforto has to pick it up. He was arguably our best hitter last year and the guy we were going to build around. This has been an absolutely brutal stretch.
.
arcarsenal : 5/24/2018 9:32 pm : link
Brandon Nimmo.

3-3 - two doubles, one triple.

No idea why this guy keeps getting benched.
Nimmo is beasting tonight
MetsAreBack : 5/24/2018 9:32 pm : link
.

Maybe Cabrera can actually do something
Nimmo is the only one doing anything
ZGiants98 : 5/24/2018 9:33 pm : link
Huge game.

A couple of months ago we heard the Marlins wanted Conforto for Realmuto and we all laughed hysterically. I'm not so sure I wouldn't do it now. It would open a permanent spot for Nimmo.
Atta boy

Finally
Nimmo. Double.
ChaChing : 5/24/2018 9:34 pm : link
They reminded us b4 this AB, he "hit for the cycle" in his last 4 over 2 games. So 5/5 in his last 5

And Cabrera comes through too!
Nice hopefully that gets
ZGiants98 : 5/24/2018 9:34 pm : link
Cabrera out of his mini-slump.

Yeah, that's the hard part. We kind of made this bed and are stuck in it. There's not much wiggle. I think Realmuto would be the real get. He would be a massive upgrade behind the dish. I'm still not really sure what the cost would be but I'd deal Gimenez+ for him without hesitation. He's really good.

Awesome night for Mets top prospect Andres Gimenez for St. Lucie -

3-for-3, walk, double, two runs scored and three stolen bases.

He's now hitting .287 on the season with .797 OPS and 15 steals.

glad he is getting some ABs now. He wouldve been buried behind Jay Bruce (gasp)
Nimmo is all
Metnut : 5/24/2018 9:48 pm : link
over these pitches. Conforto and Bruce should have to fight it out for ABs when Cespedes is back. We have to play the guys who are hitting.

Yikes. I thought Cain crushed that off the bat.
.
arcarsenal : 5/24/2018 9:52 pm : link
5 pitch inning.

EXACTLY what Matz needed there.
Nimmo has been worth a 1.1 fWAR over 36 games
ZGiants98 : 5/24/2018 10:01 pm : link
and now has a wRC+ of 176!
i love Nimmo - he has to stay in the leadoff spot
Eric on Li : 5/24/2018 10:02 pm : link
if that eventually forces Bruce to 1B so be it.

arcarsenal : 5/24/2018 10:09 pm : link
This is the best Matz has looked in a LONG time.
Matz's ERA
ZGiants98 : 5/24/2018 10:10 pm : link
is down to 3.83. If you favor FIP Wheeler has been pretty good this year, if you favor ERA Matz has been better. Im an FIP guy but it's still nice to see both are rebounding and at least have something to hang their hats on.
I dont think Matz is fooling
Metnut : 5/24/2018 10:20 pm : link
too many guys tonight. Hes battling and thats nice, but lucky to have zero ER imo. We can hang in there with an ace, a#2 starter and three #5 starters, but I want to see one of Matz or Wheeler take a leep forward and look like a real #3 starter. I still think well see Lugo or Gsellmen starting by the end of the year.
.
arcarsenal : 5/24/2018 10:24 pm : link
Matz working out of trouble is important, though - that has been one of his absolutely biggest issues. Once a few things don't go his way, he melts down.

He showed some fortitude tonight and battled.

I think the mental part of the game is where Matz has had the hardest time. It's not really that his stuff isn't there or that he can't get guys out. He can.
.
arcarsenal : 5/24/2018 11:14 pm : link
Good win, fellas. Let's keep it going tomorrow - we need a good road trip here in the worst way.
As odd as it sounds
Vanzetti : 5/25/2018 12:19 am : link
This team knows how to win.

Their batting OPS is .022 lower than their pitching OPS. That projects to a team 4 games under .500. Instead, they are four over. A good closer would probably only have 1 BS at this point in the season, which means if not for Familia's suckitude, Mets would be 10 games over .500 and in sole possession of first place.

Except for the blown saves, they have done a good job in close games. I think Mickey deserves some credit for that.

It shows how bad this team is when someone says we "desperately" need Plawecki back. Plawecki? Really? And Frazier is nothing special JAG.

Lol, memories of the summer of Sandys Pythagorean excuses...

Glen is obviously new around here. The ban hammer will be out away.
Let's win 3 out of 4
Metnut : 5/25/2018 9:18 am : link
@ Milwaukee. Would make up for the disaster losing 2 out of 3 vs miami.

Maybe Nimmo can be our surprise break out? Sandy is due to have some luck with a draft pick and us Met fans could use a positive surprise with a young player. He needs to play every day. Hopefully Bruce packed his 1B glove.

Anyone else think Rosario doesn't look completely lost at the plate? He's working hard to try and take pitches and not chase, and it's resulting in him taking some strikes, but his eye is getting better even if not translating into walks. He's working some deep counts and not just hacking away out there. The results aren't there yet, but I'm not ready to give up on this kid. Just keep throwing him out there (we don't have any better options anyway) and hopefully the light goes off soon.
If they actually playctheir young players
spike : 5/25/2018 9:41 am : link
Instead of signing retreads, they might find more gems.

Free Flores.

Oh yeah, I am way, way away from even being close to giving up on AR1. The kid is gushing with talent, he just has a lot of work to do in terms of plate discipline.

I have no problem putting a kid like that in the lineup every day even when he's struggling because the light can go on at any time. It's when older guys who have already peaked get these ridiculously long leashes that I get pissed off.
Hanley DFAd
Metnut : 5/25/2018 11:33 am : link
Seems like a Sandy type of move to pick him up. Is he better than AGonz at this point?
Rosario's struggles are far less concerning than the veterans
Eric on Li : 5/25/2018 11:54 am : link
he's a young kid making a big adjustment. His talents are obvious and nobody was counting on him to be the best player on the team from day 1. Impatience usually leads to bad decisions, and if there's 1 quality that defines Sandy it's patience.

Jay Bruce is Roberto Clemente out there compared to Hanley. The Bosox experiment with Hanley in LF was an epic disaster.

I'm extremely bullish on Rosario. I think his AB's over the last few weeks have been much improved -- the only real backsliding was after the 2-HR game. His swing got mad long again and was swinging out of his shoes. But I've seen a lot of good with him lately.
