Giants Training Camp Previews from prior years

Being a champion used to mean facing the College All-Stars the following year...

Giants defeat college-all stars

UPI 8-20-1957

“Chunking Charlie Conerly, Ken MacAfee and Ben Agajanian put on a scoring show in intermittent driving rain last night to lead the New York Giants to a 22-12 triumph over the College All Stars in the 24th annual All Star football battle. MacAfee took two touchdown passes from Conerly and in all caught three passes for 60 yards. Conerly, when he couldn't throw for touchdowns, kept the Giants in threatening range, and Agajanian twice kicked field goals and twice points after touchdowns. Conerly, a 33-year-old Mississippian and starting his 10th year in the National Football League, was the key player of the battle, lead his team to a 17th win by the professionals in the series. The game drew 75,000 fans, and most of them exertion as the players, scooting back and forth under the stands as heavy rain fell for 30 minutes to delay the start of the game for 10 minutes, and came down again in four separate bursts during the contest. The Giants trailed the Collegians, 6-0, with most of the first period gone before Conerly came into action. But Agajanian booted
a field goal and then Conerly moved the pros in front, hitting Frank Gifford for 33 yards on a pass and MacAfee for 38 and the touchdown. Later his passes sparked another drive ending when MacAfee hauled in a 10-yard scoring pitch as well as setting up Agajanian's field goal from the 45-yard line. The All Stars, who were in contention throughout the first half, had the final indignity with less than three minutes to play when defensive back Dick Nolan nailed Abe Woodson of Illinois in the All Star end zone for a safety. The All Stars were not without luminaries. John Brodie of Stanford started at quarterback and he connected on eight of 20 passes for 94 yards during the game. Paul Hornung of Notre Dame was an expert both at passing and running, and Billy Barnes of Wake Forest at times showed bursts of speed to break the Giants open. Barnes had one run of 29 yards and another of 12, but he fumbled twice and once the Giants recovered to set up their first field goal. Pass interference penalties also played a part. Clarence Peaks of the All Stars was called on interference on Gifford to give the Giants a 35-yard gain and a first down on the All Star 13. In return Sam Huff of the Giants was called on interference with Peaks' attempt to catch Brodie' pass, giving the All Stars a 15 yard gain and setting up Paige Cothren's 24-yard field goal, his second of the night. He also booted a 12-yard attempt in the second period. Conerly, in all, completed eight of 16 passes for 129 yards while Don Heinrich, who started as the Giants quarterback as usual-hit on three of five for 31. It was the third All Star defeat for head coach Curly Lambeau, who tutored the Green Bay Packers to two wins and one loss in the annual battle before he took over as the collegiate coach three years ago. His college crews now have lost two and won one. The Giants defense told the story of the second half. The All Stars gained on seven yards rushing compared to 80 during the first half and the Giants made 55 in the first half and 66 in the second.”

Roger Lewis, Hunter Sharp, and Engram......love it, love it, love it......

Honestly, I haven’t been that enamored with Roger Lewis, but maybe I’ve been too critical on him.....he might be better than what I have given him credit for. If he is, then we should be fine barring injuries.

Odell, SS, Latimer, Lewis, Sharp.............these five May be all we need. Of course we also have two outstanding TEs in EE and Ellison. Okay, feeling better about this group.

Love hearing about ELI being the man and Coach Shurmur loves him already. I have a good feeling about Lauletta more than Webb. Okay, feeling better about this group.

As for RBs....one word....SAQUON....case closed. I even am satisfied with his two back ups. Definitely feeling good about this group.

Holding my breath on 3/5 of the OL.........

Ranking TE’s
Dragon : 5/25/2018 6:00 pm : link
I agree 100% with the evaluation they mentioned only one TE on this team just don’t see what others see in Ellison as a blocker and for sure Adams can’t even beat out Ellison. Today I see only one TE on this roster worthy of keeping and he will be playing more split wide then a traditional TE. We would do much better off using an OL then either of our supposed backup TE’s presently on the team.
This picture represents snap counts for last year's TEs
Ten Ton Hammer : 5/25/2018 6:37 pm : link

The first column is offensive snaps and percent of snaps. THe middle is defensive snaps, last column special teams. Ellison played quite a bit. Separate from that, it's also really difficult to believe anyone could judge how he blocked considering the TV camera is never going to follow a blocking TE.

Ellison didn’t play nearly enough early on in the season
