NFT: 25 Years Ago Today: The Dunk

ChaChing : 5/25/2018 2:48 pm
Love me some Starks and will never get enough of this one. One of the few times MJ wasn't making the poster. One of my fav NY sports moments for sure

Gotta love ESPN's caption saying he "dunks all over Charles Oakley..." Oak man started a Bull so it might be confusing, but I'm pretty sure you can only posterize the other team

Dunk. Game. - ( New Window )
Hard to remember when the Knicks were a contender

Seems like a hundred years ago
That was a hard edged scrappy blue collar team
Coach Red Beaulieu : 5/25/2018 2:58 pm : link
I could root for, Ewing, Oakley, Mason and Starks. Not frigging Isiah Thomas and Carmelo, 25 years ffs!

The dunk is great...

largely because it's left handed, and in traffic.

Still not sure it offsets this...

Nice try Pat... - ( New Window )
I was such a huge fan of the Knicks of the 90's.

There were even a few years the Knicks took precedent over the Giants.

Wasn't that the series they went up 2-0, and ended up losing the series 4-2?
I became a Knicks fan the year before
bceagle05 : 5/25/2018 4:35 pm : link
after watching Jordan beat them in the 91-92 series. It was out of pity, because Jordan was so freaking unstoppable. Now I pity them for hundreds of reasons.

Yes it was that year. 1993 Conference Finals. See Smith, Charles...Game 5
the 70-71 Knicks were a joy to watch
gtt350 : 5/25/2018 5:43 pm : link
the talent and with no three point shots. Frazier and Monroe would have been deadly.

Reminds me of the way Mets fans constantly have to reminisce about the teams from the 80's because there's been so little to enjoy since then.

Great memories but it sucks when stuff like this from years that weren't even championship years are all we have.

Maybe one day the Knicks will actually be looked at as a contender again. Only been about 20 years since the 99 Finals.
Fuckin Charles Smith

we had them that year

Jordan has six championships but the Knicks have "the dunk". More nonsense from the self described "World's Greatest Arena" which has seen THREE championships in approximately 150 years of hockey and basketball. Let's talk about Grand Ma-ma's four pointer next.
Ugh...

I’m almost 50 and those are still the best days I’ve seen as a Kncks fan.

While I agree the Knicks harp too much on non-championship garbage the various MSG buildings have 4 Stanley Cups and 2 NBA Championships not 3. This particular Garden (MSG 4) has only had 3. Which is quite sad. Still think the Knicks let 94 get away.
I am always disappointed the Knicks of my youth never won
Matt M. : 5/26/2018 2:33 am : link
and more so for Ewing than anyone or anything. But, ring or not, those teams in the early to mid-90s were great teams. They were mostly the 2nd best team in the entire league, but had to play in the same conference as one of the best teams of all time.

But, I went from absolutely dismal Knicks teams when I started watching basketball at the end of the 70s to so-so teams led by a dynamic player in King, to a great team built around Ewing and a bunch of scrappy guys. I started out a Lakers fan because I grew up hearing about Alcindor/Abdul-Jabbar and then Magic was drafted.

But, King on the hometown team got me watching them. In the 80s I was a Georgetown fan for one reason only...Ewing. When he was drafted, my time with the Lakers was done and I was all Knicks. There were some ups and downs the first few years. But, it was fun to see how the 90s teams were built and the players grew.

More than anything, I think the Knicks lack of a title boiled down to the decision to let King walk as a FA. After fighting for nearly 2 years to return, he showed he could still play. He proved it at a high level in Washington as an all star. Imagine just a few years of Ewing and King with Jackson as the PG.

Then, you have the revolving door of PGs. I never understood that. Jackson stepped on the floor as a rookie and just made the whole team better. He had uncanny chemistry with Ewing, always knowing where the big man was and how to get him the ball. So, you let him go for Rod Strickland. OK, except, you let Strickland go a couple of years later and he turned into another all star. Then you spend 2 decades looking for a PG, with a couple of good years here and there by an aging vet.

Then, the Knicks had a chance to really rebuild. They throw it away. In the same season, Ewing and Childs had deals that were expiring. They could have let them play out their deals for one final run and then had a ton of cap space. It wasn't bad enough that they traded Ewing before the season for essentially Glen Rice, getting no cap relief. But, then in the season they deal Childs for an old Mark Jackson. Then, to add insult to injury, about 2 games into Jackson's return, they actually give him a 2 year extension, guaranteeing no cap relief. They went from prime position to rebuild to the start of the mess we are still in the midst of.
Up 2-0...

I was referring to the current MSG where the Knicks have their only two and the Rangers have their first since 1940.

Im having difficulty rooting for Dolan, just very hard to root for a team when you can't stand the owner.
For my part I actually enjoyed re-watching the play

I'm sorry if you took my post as a negative. I'm a lifelong Ranger and Knick fan and have been since the late 60's but the truth is that "The World's Most Famous Arena" hasn't produced very many championships. The Rangers with one since 1940 and the Knicks with only two in their existence. A "dunk" or a "four pointer" or, for that matter, ODB's catch against the Cowboys (a game that the Giants lost btw) mean very little. My comment wasn't meant be be a negative toward the poster or anyone that loved those plays. It was geared to the hype the Garden puts out with their "50" best moments and some of them are just plain pedestrian.

It's not called the Worlds Greatest Arena solely because the Knicks and Rangers play there.
I just checked Starks is still shooting and missing in game 7

after getting blocked in game 6. It's a nightmare that has never ended. But hey he once dunked over Jordan so I guess he's some kind of hero. There is nothing worse in sports than being a Knick fan who was born after 1970. Long live Dolan.
