For year after year constructing a roster that will only be good if about 95 different things go right all at the same time. But I'm not overly enthused by Mickey Callaway, if I'm to be honest.
AJ Ramos is trash - I say it constantly. His control is terrible and he has no plus pitch. He throws a ton of junk and tries to confuse hitters but he can't throw strikes and when he does, they usually hang.
So - can't blame this one on Familia.
And again, Thor was okay - good, not bad - but after tonight, he's got a 3.06 ERA. Which is fine for most pitchers, really good for many, actually. But not one with his stuff. If Steven Matz has a 3.06 ERA I am thrilled. Ditto Zack Wheeler. Thor? Just has to be better.
I'll say it until I am blue in the face - Jacob deGrom is an elite pitcher. Noah has elite stuff. There is a very big next step he can take but he hasn't taken it yet.
Was Sewald unavailable tonight? He's the guy I would have went to when Callaway went to Ramos. Sewald pitched two innings last night but he hadn't pitched since the first game of the Miami series before that and it was only 2/3 of an inning.
If he wasn't available, I guess it is what it is.
I don't know what happened to Blevins but he's been absolutely terrible.
We need Swarzak back desperately. Otherwise we're going to run Lugo and Gsellman into the fucking mud.
I think Collins killed Blevins arm last year but it could just be age Â
Tim Britton (Athletic$) had a good article summing up how yesterday showed all of the Mets problems at once - cliff notes for those who don't subscribe:
- Ramos and others in the BP have sucked, especially with walks. And a big part of that blame goes to Sandy who ended up paying Ramos more than Addison Reed got and giving up a prospect. (truthfully Sandy has always been very hit or miss with his BP signings and never dedicated enough of his budget there IMO).
- They continue to not spend on top players in FA, instead making depth signings, and yet their depth still sucks. Reyes has been garbage and they were forced to pinch hit Guillorme in a L on L situation. Went through how bad the depth is at AAA to help them weather injuries.
- Callaway's decisions (like pinch hitting Reyes for Thor under 80 pitches, with 2 out and 1 guy on) haven't been great, but he acknowledges that he doesn't have too many good options due to the depth.
My take on this roster (and org in general) is that the fish rots from the head down. We can fairly crush Sandy for not improving the team more over 8 years, but a big part of that is that the budget has simply been insufficient. They are 12th in payroll and have the 13th best record. 13% of their payroll has been retired due to spinal stenosis for basically 3 years, which means their effective payroll is really like 16th, which is still the high water mark for his tenure. But the lack of resources aren't just on the field - over the last few years there's been a brain drain within his FO as other teams have poached people who haven't been replaced. Or been replaced by Wilpon people he didn't seem to endorse (Omar). We know their international scouting presence is behind the top teams. They don't even get involved in top tier IFA's or defectors. As has been the case in Met land since the Wilpons took over full ownership there's no long term strategy or commitment to winning, just various levels of shame spending and a once a decade 90 win season followed by disappointment. Sandy has been an average GM whose overall record lines up pretty closely with the resources he has been given, and while he deserves to go he also deserves credit for getting the team out of the laughing stock category. When he took over we were basically the Madoff version of the Marlins. Britton: Who cost the Mets Friday night’s game? It’s a long answer - ( New Window )

I believe this to be accurate. On a side note, is the Athletic worth the subscription? I wouldn't mind paying for good quality, ad free, sports journalism.

Yes - I think it's phenomenal. For the Mets they have Britton and occasionally Carig. For the Giants they have Duggan and Pat Traina. I'm an Islanders fan so they have their best beat guy (Staple).
And then Rosenthal (MLB), Corey Pronman (NHL), and Bruce Feldman (CFB) are great national reporters. They seem to have a lot of 40% off type promotions and I believe they do a free 1 month trial. I highly recommend.

Man, he's a heck of a talent.
Tie game!
Yelich steals 2nd as well.
It actually really doesn't, since he's at 52 pitches through 4 innings.
Need a couple more runs tho!
Mets have to tangle with the Brewers bullpen now -- not an easy task.
wow
Gimenez another 2 hits.
You can not trust a guy like that with the game on the line. Wow he sucks.

It is almost June and it's time to cut bait. Let Lugo or Gsellman get a chance
