before the season starts?
Or do the Giants play it safe, and see how he plays during the season?
It's kind of a double edged sword.....if they sign him early, it might be a more friendly deal, but they will be gambling that he is ok.....if they wait, and OBj shows he is back to his old self, he might want to drive up the price.....
Or is the plan to make him play under the firth year option, and franchise tag him next year?
And if the Giants do the latter, will this affect OBj's play on the field where, if injured he might not play through it, or he won't be taking chances out on the field, where sometimes, discretion is the better part of valor.....
His injury isn’t in the knees so medically I have little doubt that he will be back to being a game changing player. Those don’t grow on trees as we all know.
It's possible.
Plus, they would want to wait to see If the ankle has caused him to lose a little, be a nagging injury, or had no effect.
We can open a ton of cap space next year if we deem it necessary.
You think the OBJ camp is reall going to throw down the gauntlet?
The distraction would be immense if not
We don’t need to feed the beast in every public outing or interview

Yes, OBJ has already stated that he's not playing unless he gets a new deal. And, I don't blame him
I doubt we see OBJ in any preseason game anyway.
Great post. I think you are exactly, 100$ correct

No he hasn't
That makes no sense. He's already under contract for this season, and they don't really have the cap room to up his salary for goodwill. He'll either sign a long-term deal (which will give the Giants some cap flexibility) or remain on his current deal.

I know that’s been speculated but where was that publicly declared?

w/incentives thrown in - for one year with a promise that if he plays up to snuff then they'll redo a long-term deal at seasons end. Pre-seasons nice but the real proof on how well a guy really performs is in the meaningful games. No way I pay him big and long-term before I see him play in real games. The Gmen should be willing to take a smaller hit to be sure they don't take a longer hit that doesn't pay off. On paper, this type of injury and OBJ's young age shouldn't hurt his future production but an ankle injury to a runner can limit their abilities!!

I was thinking the same thing. Also, 'a promise'? I wouldn't trust my employer with 'a promise'. If OBJ has half a brain, he shouldn't either.
Right. It's being assumed without any direct quotes from OBJ.
Don't get me wrong, I would imagine that that is a likely plan. And it's a bold move. But I'd like to hear it from the horse's mouth first...
Hopefully he performs well, cuts out the antics and proves to be reliable.
Then .... pay him. but not the highest in league. $30,000,000 for a receiver?
$ 15,000,000 +/- year.
In any case, the logical outcome is he will NOT risk further injury by playing without an extension. The team probably expects that, and will have to make their best call on him. They can always structure a deal that works for both parties, but I can't see him taking the field vs Jacksonville without this being resolved. Doesn't make any sense otherwise.

were on a different level. JPP's was permanent, Cruz suffered an injury NOBODY comes back from 100% and Nicks injury to his foot was at best problematic to recover from. All the published reports about OBJ stated he is expected to make a full recovery.

Come opening game, he WILL PLAY.....or he won't get paid.....
My worry is, he is under contract.....but what will his attitude be without a new one? If he has a slight injury, will he go out and play? Will he play defensively, rather than offensively, to minimize possible risk out there? If his head is not completely in the game, this offense will not be clicking on all cylinders.....
I hope for his sake, and the Giants, that he is 100%.....that he goes out there with an "I'll show you attitude", and demonstrates that he is back.....and once the Giants see this, then negotiations can begin in earnest....
Then why didn't you just say that!!!
It's possible.
That looks like an "infinity" sign to me. As good as Odell is infinity is a pretty steep price to pay, especially with Collins contract also coming up.
