[Jsckie] Miles is the longtime former equipment manager for the Panthers, who became a NFL expansion franchise in 1993 and first took the field in 1995. He was one of the team's first hires and carried the unique distinction of representing the team at its NFL Draft table every year.

I just noticed your handle
Lol

That Miles funneled Panther's equipment to local bars to pay off his tabs. If that is true, it looks like the Giants just got themselves another crooked equipment guy.
Giants did the same thorough search for their equipment manager as their GM process
I mean it’s hard to tell. The equipment guy being crooked is a negative statement, but by every aspect so far, the Giants were very successful in their GM choice. Maybe you’re saying that the thoroughness of a search is independent of results?

Thats hilarious haha
Anyone able to provide the link? thank you in advance.
2) This position is not one I would necessarily have the GM fill. This isn't football personnel or even really football operations.
3) I think the sarcasm over the search was misread. It was an indictment kn the lack of thoroughness inthis process, not a complaint about the GM process.
4) I don't really find the handle referencing Collins' past demons very funny.
Anyone able to provide the link? thank you in advance.

The equipment manager position seems closely tied to football operations. He's pretty heavily involved in the logistics of running a team.

My name is Jackie Miles and I’m the Head Equipment Manager for the Carolina Panthers and have been for the last 23 ½ years. Before that I was the Head Equipment manager for Boston College for a guy by the name of Tom Coughlin, who is a terrific Mentor and friend of mine. Tom, has the most incredible integrity of any of the finest human beings I ever met in my life.
The reason I’m emailing you is that I just came across and article on Big Blue interactive.com where you state that I have a side business selling jerseys on the side to bars in the area and our team knows about it and looks the other way. That is a terrible thing to falsely accuse anyone of let alone an equipment guy. All Equipment guys have that stigma and stereo type because of our positions and because of other Equipment guys who have sold items out the back door in the past.
I use to own a bar in Fort Mill, SC called the Town Tavern and yes I had a lot of my own personal memorabilia collection on display there along with my former partner who also had a memorabilia collection. I bought that bar with my super bowl bonus money that I received in 2004 when we went to the super bowl and we were beat by the Patriots.
When a guy like Joe Skiba gets accused of selling stuff on the side, I have a tendency to know there is always two sides to the story. Joey is a friend of mine but it this comes out to be true he will no longer be a friend of mine. I don’t sell stuff out the back door, I don’t cut deals on the side, never have, never will, nor do I approve of anyone selling stuff out the back door. I can also tell you my owner Jerry Richardson, who is another one of the finest human beings I ever met in my life and is like a father to me, would fire me in a second if your accusation would be true, which it is the furthest thing from the truth. He for sure wouldn’t look the other way.
You don’t last 23 ½ years in the NFL, 21 of the last ones of the being the highest paid Equipment manager in the NFL by a lot. My owner has always rewarded me for my hard work, Honesty, goodness to my co-workers and team mates, my integrity, and most importantly for always doing the right thing. Selling jerseys to local bars is not doing the right thing and was a terrible assumption on your part or whoever started that terrible rumor.
If you have Charlotte ties like it says in your tweets you may want to watch a football life tonight at 9pm on NFL Network featuring Sam Mills. He is a longtime friend and may be the finest human being out of them all that I’ve met and have known for 35 years since my days as the equipment manager for the Philadelphia Stars in the USFL.
Last, not every Equipment Manager is crooked. There are plenty of us out there that take a lot of pride in what we do, are thrilled to death to be where we are in life and would never take the chance of losing that by compromising our principles to make a few bucks on the side. If any other Equipment Manager does that, shame on them.
Thank you for your time,
Jack
I honestly don't know if this is a good hire or a bad hire. My point then, and in the past week discussing the skiba's is that the equipment managers funnel a lot of equipment through the system. Sometimes for charitable reasons. Sometimes for local bars and restaurants. Sometimes to make extra money.
It is not an easy job to be the equipment manager. You often don't have a staff other than an assistant who gets paid peanuts and you are in charge of a lot of stuff. Mike Rowe would consider it a "Dirty Job" for the NFL. And basically, the managers have the tacit approval of the team to be discreet in moving merchandise. That's where the Skiba's screwed up. If an equipment manager gets let go. That's why.
When I brought up miles doing similar things, it was to use an example of how most equipment managers do this. I used him as an example because I have 1st hand knowledge, but I could've used a lot of examples whether it be for the Raiders, Jets, Dolphins or Chiefs.
As a follow-up to Miles' e-mail, I had a back and forth about other bars he's supplied equipment to for evening up debts. I also told him I didn't have articles or tweets, but one random post on here when the story about Eli and the Skiba's broke last year. His concern was this "accusation" would get back to Richardson or that I'd write an article in the local paper about it, and I told him that wasn't my intention.
From all accounts, in his role as an equipment manager, he knows what he's doing and is excellent at supporting the team. That wasn't what I was getting at - it was that he and a lot of others (including the Skibas) do other things that are less above board. Not to denounce him, but to show that the practice is common.
Funny, that’s EXACTLY what came up for me as well
He is very tight with Jerry Richardson, and Richardson has had his back. By the way, the attached article shows how Richardson looks at Thomas Davis and Greg Olsen, which adds more insight to the Gettleman firing, but here's an excerpt about Miles:
Miles was also very close with Sam Mills. For years, he would refuse to give any other player #51 until the team finally retired it.
