Frank Gifford was as versatile as Barkley - maybe more so.

Ira : 5/27/2018 9:00 am
Gifford made the Pro Bowl 8 times as a running back, as a receiver and even as a defensive back. Gifford threw passes for 823 yards and 14 touchdowns (and 6 interceptions). The 14 td's is still the most for any non-quarterback in nfl history. If Barkley doesn't already know about what Gifford has done, I think he'd enjoy hearing about it. I expect he'll carry on that tradition.
It is hard to name other players in the last 60 years who have come

close to Gifford’s diversity, even if you disregard his ability as a DB.

He was the toast of the town in the 1950s, but only in November and December. The rest of the year, it was all about Mays, Mantle, and Snider.
He was all of that as I saw him in his prime, even his MVP

I got to say hi to Frank once

He was crossing the street by the ABC building in Manhattan back in the late 80's while I was stopped in traffic. My window was down so I waved and yelled to him and he waved back with a smile. He was one of a kind on the field and a class act off the field in my book.

I'm glad you had that experience. Every once in a while we get a player who epitomizes greatness on and off the field. Gifford, Strahan and Eli have been like that. I think Saquon will continue that tradition.

Gifford was MUCH more versatile than Barkley will ever be.

Not only was Gifford a very good runner and receiver who played both HB and WR during his career, but he was also the best at throwing the HB option pass. In fact, he was a good enough passer and team leader that he even played QB in one pre-season.

Plus Gifford could place kick competitively. In the mid-fifties he kicked FGs and XPs on a part-time basis for the GIANTS, sharing that job with Ben Agajanian and others. I don't remember Gifford kicking off, but he certainly could have.

As a college tailback in the limited substitution era, he was also a very decent punter. He would very occasionally quick kick for the GIANTS to effect a major change of field position. A quick kick is an unexpected punt. The offense kicks it on 3rd down when the defense does not have a return man back, so the kickers get more yardage on the exchange than they would otherwise. It's a play that has completely disappeared from modern football.

Gifford also played DB when he first joined the GIANTS because they needed help there in an era of 33-man rosters.

The NFL has never seen a more versatile player than Gifford despite what those jack-offs at ESPN think. And the pro game most likely never will see another player who is anywhere near as versatile as Gifford was.

Talking Giants and MNF with him
She had her nose up so high I’m surprised it didn’t bleed
Gifford was a great player in his time.

No question. The question I ask myself is how would a player of that time perform in today’s league? I think we will be happy SB is on our team.
A different game

In the 50's it was totally different. There were many 2 way players back then. Frank Gifford was a great player but could he just run and receive as well as Barkley. Another example of old times is Cy Young would sometimes pitch both ends of a doubleheader and complete both games. Sports are totally different today

I ve never understood the question you propose.

Why would a great and dominant player of the 50 s / 60 s, with the advantage of today s nutrition and trading science, not be a dominant player today

I don t get it.

Strahan is a dick off the field. Always has been. Eli on the other hand is great. Such a nice guy.

....soccer, hoops, baseball you name it. Wouldn't be shocked if he could throw the ball 50 yards. Giants should let him throw it a couple of times a year...

Also Barkley. He had some success doing it in college.
