Tanaka has made a major change
rich in DC : 5/27/2018 2:47 pm : link
He is throwing what looks like a 4 seam FB that "backs up" on lefties and a cut FB against righties. His 2 seamer is straight and hittable. He apparently has finally accepted that the 4 seamer is the way to go.

You can see hitters giving up on the pitch, recognizing it as a FB, but then looking VERY surprised when it cuts back into the strike zone.

This is an important change. If hitters have to respect the FB, they can no longer eliminate the splitter and sit on the breaking stuff. They are going to have to begin guessing whether he is throwing the straight 4 seamer, the backup 2 seamer or the splitter.

It also makes the slider/change more effective because they are generally on the same plane. Very interesting.

Normally 2 seamers run and 4 seamers go straight.

Frustrating series offensively

Sure we scored 3 so far today bc their starter was all over the place, but seems like nobody’s had a big hit in their bat this weekend. Except for Gleyber Friday night
Tanaka has not been
section125 : 5/27/2018 3:17 pm : link
economical, but pitched a decent game. Maybe 1 more inning.
Very slow paced game

Pre-requisite

HR from Tanaka.

Ahead in count again.
Just get

thru this inning, and cobble the last three together with Betances, Robertson, and Chappy.
hilarious dive by Stanton to end the inning
RasputinPrime : 5/27/2018 3:32 pm : link
I'd love to know if Tanaka would be the same pitcher if he didn't have to worry about his elbow. I imagine we'll need to wait for his memoirs for that answer.
T remember there was a discussion amongst reporters over

who was the better OF - Judge or Stanton. No question now.

Judge is so smooth and Stanton is awkward out there.

Nothing about Stanton has been as advertised so far this year. He looks uncomfortable in the field and at the plate. Testament to his talent that he has still produced but I really haven't enjoyed watching him.
Walk Judge (smart)

4 K game
RasputinPrime : 5/27/2018 3:43 pm : link
he is chasing so much out of the zone and missing badly some some pitches in the zone. Thames needs to figure this out.

I thought I read earlier this season that no player has ever had 3 such games in a season.
I think it's time to let Sanchez hit 3rd for a while

Wasn’t he the first player to strike out 5 times twice in a week??? And he swings at pitches that bounce in the dirt
Angels ar a good team.
section125 : 5/27/2018 4:02 pm : link
but the batting for the Yanks kind of sucks.
Why the hell
section125 : 5/27/2018 4:06 pm : link
does Betances come in and throw 2 breaking Balls? I swear whoever is calling this game is a fucking idiot.
Dellin not looking sharp today

I really hope someone gets on for the yankees

anyone else a little disappointed with the yanks today though? their bats of recent have been average-poor. three runs is all we end up with today? surprising.

hoping chapman can slam the door here
Nice series win.

UConn4523 : 5/27/2018 4:40 pm : link
they will have slumps, it’s normal. Be happy we just took 2 of 3 and won another series against a top 10 team.
nice
BleedBlue : 5/27/2018 4:42 pm : link
gotta be happy taking 2-3, last night sucked but good rebound and a pretty good outing for tanaka. Of course had the signature HR allowed when he was ahead in the count but overall pretty good.

Stros coming up...another tough series!

Agreed, kinda ugly baseball this weekend, but the positives are strong starts from Sevy and Tanaka, bullpen got the job done Friday and Sunday, and mostly smooth work in the field really helped.
Nice Series Win.
Dave in Hoboken : 5/27/2018 4:45 pm : link
They're not playing their best right now. But they still just took a series against one of the best teams in baseball and a team they've struggled against for a number of years now. They've won 8 out of their last 9 series. Can't really complain about that.
FWIW,

Wrong, they scored 5 in the 9th to tie.

I'm with you on this. He is incredibly frustrating to watch. The fact that he keeps on chasing that slider down and away when it's not even close is infuriating. Also, I don't gey the closed stance. He won an MVP and hit 59 home runs and hit .281 with a much more natural looking stance. Since changing to this one he looks like a relatively easy out to anybody with a tight slider. It's the same pitch Alfonso Soriano couldn't lay off in '03 playoffs.

Correct. 2 seamers run and are generally a few mph slower. Really good ones are sinkers.
That was the Angels first road series loss of the year.

UConn4523 : 5/27/2018 5:49 pm : link
during the regular season. I’m confident in him cranking it up when it matters in the playoffs. I’m also confident in CC come playoffs. We need innings eaters right now, especially when we play the easier part of the schedule. Monty coming back will be big.

We got the good Tanaka today and we hopefully will get some consistency out of him.
Watching Sanchez catch Chapman can give one a bad stomach.
Although... Chapman made a nice

round impression in the Ford sign with that one that sailed away.
It is pretty obvious that when Tanaka
section125 : 5/28/2018 7:21 am : link
throws his FB 93/94 he is a completely different pitcher.
