Post SB 46: Worst Giant game that stands out?

Aqua Giants : 5/28/2018 6:51 pm
What the hell happened? Ever since that ball hit the ground against New England in February 2012, this team has been a laughing stock. One good season. 11-5 then our defense decided to take a nap on one play and then they gave GB the game.

What was the one game since the last time the Giants did anything relevant (super bowl 46) that got you going and still ticks you off to this date (may 28th, 2018)?

Oh yeah that's my answer: 2017 playoff game vs Green Bay. Only one who showed up to be big men in a big spot were Eli Manning and Will Tye haha

Probably cuz I was there to see it live. Watching the sack fumble of Geno Smith by Khalil Mack epitomized the futility of last season. Just dismal.

I've said this before how much this game pissed me off but my answer is the 2016 Philly game on Thursday Night. There was no way in hell the Giants should've came out and laid an egg that night, they needed a win to clinch a playoff spot and what better way would you have solidified it by beating your rival in their building? Not only that but a rival who has been giving you fits for years.

Nope. Once again same old shit, down in a hole 14-0 to the roar of those moron Philly fans. Reese should have been thrown out of the stadium head first for not being able to assemble a Giant team incapable of beating a substandard Philly team who hasn't won a playoff game in 10 years prior to this year.

Hell, 2 of Philly's wins every year got them to mediocre every year since 2008 thanks to the Giants incapability of sweeping them.
The loss in Washington in 2012
Matt in SGS : 5/28/2018 8:06 pm : link
by one point, when RG III fumbled and Morgan returned it for a TD. The Giants lost that game 17-16, and if they won that game a few things would have happened

- The Giants would have clinched the NFC East despite hitting the wall late in the season
- RG III likely would have been able to rest after he hurt his knee and not try to force his back on the field, where he eventually blew it out and pretty much derailed his career.
- Kirk Cousins never sees the field and doesn't become one of the highest paid players in NFL history

So much went wrong after Hurricane Sandy for the Giants, but if they had won that game in Washington, they at least would have had a shot in the playoffs. After the 2012 season, the core of the 2007 team had officially died out and set the Giants off on to their malaise the past several seasons.
It’s not even close

At Philly 2012.

The giants LOOKED like the giants all night long. They had the game in their hands. Close game throughout some weird plays some flukes as usual but down the stretch the giants had this game in the palm of their hands. I remember thinking this is Eli and coughlin, defending champs, we fucking got this and at Philly no less, I was not scared in the least. Then on the last drive the giants got weird and turned to Ramses barden time and time again— weird plays weird penalties... don’t even remember the specifics only that they fucking blew it and the FG attempt fell just short.

That game right there and the outcome scared the crap out of me. We haven’t been the same since that season. Granted, the giants recovered from that game ended up winning some big road games after that but this game was a harbinger of things to come. They had no business losing that game.

Will Beatty had a brutal holding call on a big 3rd down conversion the Giants made late in that 2012 Redskins game, if I remember correctly. Garbage football player. Now he's a champion with the Eagles!

..overlooked a lot but I'd say one is Pittsburgh in '12. Week after Sandy...team asked for absolutely no accommodation from the league and had a 10 point lead in the 4th with a chance to grab the division by the balls. Defense couldn't hold and the offense missed on a couple big plays late that could have iced it. Cruz takes a hit that I think altered the trajectory of his career. Let down spills into next week at Cinci and they again leave a bunch of points on the board in the 1st half and eventually cave.

Obviously they fire back out of the break and once again embarrass GB but may not have hurried Nicks and Phillips back had they not fumbled control of the division.

I think that team had a lot more to offer than the record shows, knowing that the defense openly admitted they were kind of dogging it until December, and the disruptive events going on in their back yard. We had really good specials, the defense forced a ton of TO's, and the running game - while still shaky situationally - was able to ice many games with big 4th quarter runs/drives.

I think that 18 month span from the '12 offseason (horrible draft) through the start of the '13 season was the major inflection point in what put the team where it is.
It literally HAS

to be the Philly game where we got shut out and Cruz tore his patella. I simply don't understand how there can be any other answer.

That Pitt game pissed me the fuck off.
2015 Week 1 against Dallas and not even close
RutgersGiantsFan : 5/28/2018 8:28 pm : link
Giants completely blew that game with baffling clock management mistakes. This set the tone for the rest of the season as the Giants would lose many more close games such as the Falcons, Saints, Patriots, Jets, and Panthers games leading to Coughlin "stepping down" from head coach.

Honorable mention: 2017 Week 3 against Philly. Had a chance to change the direction of the season with a big road win against a division rival after starting 0-2 but instead blew the game with stupid penalties and a bad Brad Wing punt. Also losing on a 61 yard field goal is no fun. This game sent both teams in completely opposite directions in the worst possible way.

The Pitt game was annoying, as was the Eagles game, and the blowouts by Atlanta and Baltimore. But again, none of it would have mattered if the Giants won in Washington. That game singularly killed the 2012 season because it gave the Redskins the tie breaker.

GB Playoff game
Joey in VA : 5/28/2018 9:09 pm : link
The defense was all over Rodgers initially and if the offense had done anything right we win that game going away. The defense was rabid early and Odell and Shep had easy TDs in their hands and dropped them. That was the beginning of the end of this regime and that putrid run. I'm actually glad it happened in retrospect because we have a GM and coach I love and draft picks I absolutely wanted in every round save Lauletta. And we went out and got a stud LT finally and jettisoned some of the softest weak minded pussies this team has had in decades. Odell is on the same page with Shurmur, the young QBs are workaholics studying from a great and we have a franchise RB learning from a true pro in Jon Stewart. We added two mauling run blocking guards, big DL up front and we're moving to the 3-4. This has been a dream off-season for my personal tastes.

last year was a rough one. 3rd close loss in a row along with crushing injuries.

1st Philly loss brutal as well. It was the first time I really thought that the season wasn’t going to work out, but losing OBJ in SD was the final nail in the coffin.

I was at that game. What a piece of trash game. The weather was unbearable because it was muggy and humid. Two winless teams looking as pathetic as ever, lol. The crowd was so dead after that Eli Manning fumble. I knew they weren't going to drive down the field and win so I just left. Worst part too was I had to go to Philly where everything was delightful.

McAdoo didn't even give a shit OBJ got hurt right? Just looking at his useless dumb diner menu playbook.

Good God. I think we coughed up a 21-0 lead or something to a horrible team.
That lost in the opener
joeinpa : 5/29/2018 7:57 am : link
Coughlin s last season was a loss that set the tone for that year.

That was a game where the coaching staff and Eli snatched defeat out if the hands of victory.

I remember Beckham catching the ball inside the 4 yard line for a first down with little time left. I though they had won a huge game.

That one still stings.

Losing Super Bowl is always the hardest to take....

So, the Baltimore Super Bowl....comes to mind.

I got into the Giants and family dinner "party" after game which made up for the hame.

opener in Dallas. Not close IMO. Don't forget McAdoo had a hand in it too. Sign of ineptitude to come and really just a baffling string of boneheaded decisions for a group of professionals.

That was the ‘15 season in a nutshell. Giants had similar games vs Saints, Pats, Jets, and Panthers that year. 6-10 could’ve been 11-5.

Week 2 in 2013 (I think against Carolina?) was the worst offensive line performance I have ever seen by the Giants.

I knew the season was done at that point.

Route 9 : 5/29/2018 2:27 pm : link
That 2012 team was weird. One week they put up 52 and then the very next they put up 0. They beat the Packers and Saints but then got hammered and looked pathetic against Atlanta and Baltimore where the offense no showed. They scored 7 points in both games, and then maybe I think they got one garbage TD at the end of the Ravens game.

That was the last time I remember when, if the Giants got blown out it was actually surprising. The problems carried over into 2013 with Beatty being considered worthy of a starting LT role, which I never thought was a wise choice.

We had the game in hand, I put my feet up on the coffee table expecting to watch them run out the clock. Then somehow they f’d the whole thing up. Awful. That was the game that made me ok if they decided to go another direction from Coughlin.
