Duggan: We'll learn soon who the Giants will tender

Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/13/2024 12:22 pm

@DDuggan21
Something to monitor today: Teams have until 4 pm to decide if they're going to tender restricted free agents. Giants have interesting decisions with WR Isaiah Hodgins and CB Nick McCloud.

The lowest tender amount is a one-year, $3M contract with no guaranteed money. Both are useful players, but the Giants may view $3M as a bit rich. Do they tender just to ensure they keep quality depth pieces? Do they try to sign them for cheaper? We'll know in a few hours.

******

I've attached the possibilities, confirmed by an earlier Giants.com free agent primer.

I think they should tender Hodgins

With McCloud, who i like, they should get him into camp with a lower hit than $3mm.
If they are serious about improving Special Teams play
Tom in NY : 3/13/2024 12:26 pm : link
then they need to Tender McCloud. He has been excellent as a gunner on punt coverage and is a core ST player, as well as multi position DB.
$3M seems just fine for him.

I can be sold either way on Hodgins, but would likely Tender him as well.
I think and hope, they’ll tender both.
Spider56 : 3/13/2024 12:27 pm : link
There are already too many holds to fill.
Yes would like both
Jim in Forest Hills : 3/13/2024 12:28 pm : link
but if I had to pick is Mcloud. Dude can play more than specials imo. CB, S, he can play boundary too which is hard.
Or they could sign them to 2 year deals
Andy in Boston : 3/13/2024 12:28 pm : link
To make cap hit lower … more incentive for the player - is that possible?
Mccloud is worth it
GiantsFan84 : 3/13/2024 12:31 pm : link
Hodgins it depends on where they view him on depth chart and if they plan on going WR in the draft. If they view him as #5 on the depth chart or that’s a lot to pay him.
I don't see Hodgins as being worth $3 million
sb from NYT Forum : 3/13/2024 12:33 pm : link
...He looked like he took a step back last year.
Giants.com

also had Lawrence Cager listed as a potential RFA.
Tender McCloud, let Hodgins walk.
Section331 : 3/13/2024 12:38 pm : link
McCloud is a good ST player, and can be an effective 5th DB. If available, invite Hodgins to camp, if someone signs him, so be it.
i like both players - id try to work out a small 2 year deals w/ gtd $
Eric on Li : 3/13/2024 12:38 pm : link
kind of like what they did with nick gates a few years ago.

basically buy 1 extra cheap year in return for some actual guaranteed $.

something like 2 years, 4.5m with 2.5m guaranteed.

1.5m signing bonus
year 1 = 1m gtd base (1.75m cap #)
year 2 = 2m base (2.75m cap #)

for guys who haven't made any real money yet, i think it would be hard to pass up 1.5m cash in their bank accounts tomorrow and 2.5m total guaranteed. they've both been waived before.

i think that's a better outcome for both parties.
I don’t think any of the four RFAs
Pepe LePugh : 3/13/2024 12:39 pm : link
are worth tendering. If no tender, they become UFAs. They still can, and hopefully will, be resigned. But $3M is an overpay, quite likely bidding against yourself. I don’t see it happening.
and Wyatt Davis

The #Giants are working to bring back some of their restricted free agents, which include TE Lawrence Cager, WR Isaiah Hodgins and CB Nick McCloud, per sources. The lowest tender has ballooned to just about $3 million.

The new league year begins today at 4 p.m. (EST).

This
With the CB room being so thin, McCloud is an underrated depth player
But I'm sure they will evaluate that 3m vs investing in an upgrade

Banks, Flott and Hawkins need some bolstering
Is Aaron Robinson even a real person?
Darnay Holmes? Time to move on
Why would they tender Hodgens?
ZogZerg : 3/13/2024 12:55 pm : link
They didn't use him last year.
I would definitely like to
Bill in UT : 3/13/2024 12:59 pm : link
keep McCloud. Hodgins in expendable, especially, as ZZ said, if they don't plan to use him more than last year.

christian : 3/13/2024 1:02 pm : link
If I were an RFA I would definitely be proposing guaranteed money in exchange for a lowe cap hit.

If they’re “working to bring back” RFA’s, then they’re not tendering. Tender contracts are set. You tender or you don’t. Nothing has to be negotiated or “worked on”. Tells us they are trying to get at least some of them signed to a contract below the tender amount.

He's versatile and a gamer. $3m is well spent on him!
