The Yankees and their fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Jon Heyman and Mark W. Sanchez of the New York Post report that defending AL Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole is expected to avoid surgery after further evaluation on his ailing elbow. The recommendation is for a treatment program of rest and non-surgical rehab. Heyman and Sanchez report that Cole is expected to be out for roughly one to two months. Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets that the timeline for a return to MLB action should be closer to 10-12 weeks. In either case, surgery isn’t on the table at present and the Yankees should get their ace back within the season’s first half. That was the initial expectation. Team doctors reportedly identified the issue as elbow inflammation and concluded that Cole’s ulnar collateral ligament was intact. He nevertheless visited noted orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache for additional testing today. It seems that in-person evaluation confirmed the initial indication that Cole has not sustained any UCL damage. |
Just a few days ago they were saying Cole would be out 1 to 2 months, now its 2.5 to 3 months.
I wouldn't expect to see Cole until about sometime in June
(if everything goes okay).

They also said that 10-12 weeks was the timetable to start throwing again...so that means another month to six weeks for throwing program and rehab to come off the IL and join the big club.
Again, this is sports radio, and they were really pessimistic on Cole, because the nature of a pitcher being out that long means that this is more than just inflammation, bc inflammation doesn't take that long to heal with rest.

Anybody caught the breakout game?
Well put.
Anybody caught the breakout game?
I caught most of it. Spencer Jones is really starting to excite me. And Selvidge is an interesting prospect. Doesn’t have elite stuff but the dude knows how to pitch. Could be a legit rotation piece down the road
In other exciting news, Volpe is assaulting spring training pitching again.

The silver lining is this may necessitate Gil being the 5th starter. He’s looked great, better than Warren and Beeter. For some reason they didn’t stick with him when he came up, maybe the injury had something to do with it, but hopefully now he’s one of Cashman’s “preferred” prospects.

I believe Gil is returning from an injury such that he would be on an innings cap. If anything, he gets the Michael King role or an opener-type role (assuming I'm right).

up again. Gil looked good again. I hope he and Warren get a real chance, and Hampton too towards the second half. The starting rotation is full of questions, some of them should see time.

Everything I'm reading says that Jones is the likely CF as Jasson's instincts as an OF aren't great in CF and he makes more sense in one of the corners. Jones is apparently a natural OF with an improving arm (remember that he used to be a pitcher but blew out his arm and had TJ his freshman year at Vandy)- and the arm strength has returned.
