Sorry to put it that way, but it needs to be bluntly stated. Schoen should have used that 3rd rounder to pick a TE or competent and able bodied player, not this loser. Call his bluff and keep him. Make him the 3rd TE or release him when there's no market for his "services."
I believe he gets paid the same retired or released
The restructure they did was all salary as there was no bonus money because of the trade so that's done. It only affects if he can play next year which if he retired the Giants would still own his rights. I'd release him. He's proven to be damaged goods.

I admire those that can turn their life around after an addiction but sometimes there is an underlying problem that led to that addiction.
It would be understandable if he wished to live the rest of his life in a less stressful endeavor (like music) as contrasted to professional football.
how do you know this?

they want him to retire, he wants them to cut him. What can you do?

Once a player starts talking about retirement, and one that’s over paid on a bad team, what else would you take from this scenario?
Waller wants out and wants to be paid. Giants want an all in TE not a half in TE. They want him to retire and not pay him.
Am I certain? No. But that’s what it sounds like.
we aren’t winning a Super Bowl this year and I doubt he plays 2 more years
what is best case scenario? He plays 8 games and then retires after the year? Just let him go

I don't think teams engage in a lot of subterfuge to sneak a TE thru the draft
This.
