NFT: Guilty Pleasure TV Shows

christian : 3/17/2024 10:02 pm
A few weeks ago I was browsing Rotten Tomatoes to find a low-thought show, and started watching The Order. Perfectly fine, but reminds me of much lower quality Buffy.

Which brings me to my real point, which is that Buffy is the best guilty pleasure of all time.

What do you got?

Middle school Christian learned a lot about life from Melrose Place.

I’ve seen every season up until the last one. The first couple seasons are a bit rough but once they start finding gold it’s a fun ride. I’m a sucker for heavy iron equipment and that lifestyle.
Not sure if this counts but

How It's Made on the Science Channel.

I always stop to check it out when I'm channel surfing but for the most part it's actually pretty boring.

"The bottles get cleaned for a 2nd time on the assembly line."
Columbo
PatersonPlank : 3/17/2024 10:37 pm : link
Classic show with Peter Falk that "restarted" the whole TV detective genre. Very popular in the 70's and 80's.

I'd also add the original Quantum Leap, not the remake
Psych

Love Gold Rush. I have watched every episode of it. It gets a bit monotonous with the narration/editing style but I still find it interesting, especially watching how Parker grows his little empire.

No guilt on Columbo
oghwga : 3/18/2024 7:10 am : link
All time classic with some great actors and directors. Not crazy about the later years but the first couple of seasons are incredible. For real guilty pleasure my sister-in-law has special needs and I've spent the past two days with her and I found her the Love Boat Channel on Pluto TV.

I've spent the last two days watching Capt Steubing and the gang including the Love Boat Mermaids. That is a guilty pleasure.
Hmm, my wife likes
section125 : 3/18/2024 7:14 am : link
"Below Deck" - reality show about expensive charters on high end yachts. Some of it is pretty good.
Glad I never became part of that end of the maritime field.
I considered myself pretty anti-reality TV shows
pjcas18 : 3/18/2024 7:52 am : link
but I watched this "reality" show maybe 5 or 6 years ago (if you told me it was 8 I wouldn't argue) called Billy the Exterminator. It was basically an exterminator from Louisiana who dressed like a 80's glam rocker and went to field frantic calls from homeowners. It was mesmerizing.

mostly snakes, rats, gators, raccoons and stuff, but other than Cops it was the only reality TV I watched.

I was in a hotel recently with not many channels and I have hotel room insomnia often and I watched maybe 6 straight hours of "homestead rescue" or something like that. it was a show where a small team of people went out to rescue homesteaders who got in over their heads.

Also, not sure if these count as guilty pleasures, but I'm a sucker for almost any "Alaska the last frontier" or "surviving Alaska" style show.
Corner Gas
PEEJ : 3/18/2024 7:58 am : link
comedy in small-town Saskatchewan. Reminds me of a Seinfeld-like "show about nothing".
Agree on Columbo
UConn4523 : 3/18/2024 8:15 am : link
it’s a classic, all time great show in its genre.

I watched way more episodes of Billy the Exterminator than I’d like to admit, lol. Good nomination.
Pawn Stars
ShockNRoll : 3/18/2024 8:18 am : link
I never actually watch a full episode, but when I'm scrolling through my Facebook video feed, it is full of Pawn Stars clips and I will sit there watching them for an hour sometimes.

I don't think Survivor falls under guilty pleasure shows as much, but I still watch every episode, and my wife and I are watching all the seasons with our son. I remember we used to have Survivor episode threads on here back in the day!

Not quite guilty
UConn4523 : 3/18/2024 8:50 am : link
But IMO “Dirty Jobs” is one of the best “reality” shows of all time. Mike Rowe is awesome and I love seeing all the blue collar work you don’t know exists that makes our society function the way it does.

that's where Billy the Exterminator came from. He was in Dirty Jobs. I liked it. to me Cops was the best reality show of all time, but it became too formulaic and not real enough (if it was ever real).

I do remember that episode, he was like

The name escapes me, but there is a law enforcement show on Peacock (I think) where they have color commentators.

I grew up in a pretty ghetto part of Southern California, and they are regularly in that part of the world. Probably arresting the kids of the kids I grew up with.

I can't put that one down when I see it on.

Golden Girls

It is one of the most well-written comedy shows. So many subtle jokes you don't get without watching multiple times.

And I love the original Quantum Leap. The idea of having a middle-aged white guy walk in the shoes of completely different people is genius. And I'm not sure that was planned by the creators of the show.

a guilty pleasure for some of you?

I was not a fan but it is generally regarded as a top 25 or so sitcom of all time. Worst case top 50 depending on the source, but not something I would think of with guilty pleasure.

Tony Beets has to be one of the best "characters" on TV.

Never watched it when it was on but I stream Big Bang Theory. I LOL at least once an episode.

Oak Island drives me nuts. I have probably watched every episode. NOTHING ever happens. Yeah they find a coin, or wood, or something made of rock. How deep are those guys pockets? The equipment they use cost millions. I hope it pays off. The medal detector guy is hilarious.
Oh, and how could I forget
