Lame duck HC, good, but overpaid QB who is clearly hitting his head constantly against his ceiling, significant holes to be filled, limited cap room, other big names up for new contracts, and coming off another disappointing playoff performance.
They used the automatic conversion feature in his contract to convert some of his base salary to a signing bonus and spread out over his void years.
I mentioned in another thread about a month ago that they would use automatic conversion to free up cap space.
Not a restructure or extension.

Spot on. You are right as usual about Dallas. Living in Dallas keeps you aware of the inner workings of the team.
werder says they are continuing to negotiate an extension with him, but having to do this means they either needed more leverage or time in those negotiations (probably both).
When I hear about Dallas' "woes" ---QB, cap space, coaching, I keep wondering how many of us would gladly swap teams with them? Contenders every year, consistently beat the tar out of some opponents (Giants?), exciting offense, disruptive defense? Yeah, cry me a river.
I'm not talking about past glories ... just the last 5-6 years. They are a lot closer to the SB than we are.
Personally can't stand them (the "America's Team" BS), but I do envy their ability to draft, restock their team and compete at a high level.
You have a good QB but not one who has stepped up when it matters in the playoffs. You are not elite or a top tier QB until you do this imv.
I wonder how Lance is doing and if they see something in him.
It would not surprise me to see Dallas make a play for a QB if things break right for them in the draft.
Dallas is not going to move on from Prescott this year. If Dallas has a scenario like this last year, than I believe they move on in 2025.
Very little is reported about Lance. His questions will be answered or not in training camp. If he succeeds Rush will be cut. If not Rush will remain the backup.
Dallas will not draft a QB this year. You can almost bank that the first three rounds go OT, LB, RB.
Converting salary (or in this case a roster bonus) into a bonus on an amortization schedule is technically a restructure, whether that was pre-approved in the original contract or not.
Agree with Fanatic that Dak will play out his contract this year
Both Dak and McCarthy are in their final year -- seems pretty clear Jones wants them to prove they can get over the hump before investing more in them.

You forgot they easy part - no matter what, they are still the freakin' Dallas Cowboys - blech!

Lots of signs pointing to a pullback in 2024.
They need to move on from Dak asap.

Fanatic may have more info on Lance.
It may have been time to be bold, but just moving on from the QB with no path to a viable replacement isn't a plan. That's just dumb.
Maybe. Or just smart.
There is a lot of evidence showing Dak can't raise his game in the playoffs.

You and me both.
Not many of our offensive players would start on that team, probably only Thomas. Yeah they are in terrible shape…LOL
Dak:
Year 1: $75M
Year 2: $20M
Year 3: $31M
Year 4: $34M
DJ
Year 1: $46M
Year 2: $36M
Year 3: $30.5M
Year 4: $47.5M
As far as Jerry's wallet is concerned, Dallas took the pain up front.
