If JJM is on the board at 5 teams may be trying to trade up to select him.
It could be Minnesota and the Giants. Or if Minnesota moves to 3 to select Maye, as many think will happen, it could be NYG, NE, or the Raiders.
In this scenario, Harbaugh will have some control over where JJM goes. Intersting wrinkle given the close relationship between JJM and Harbaugh.
I don't think that is what is being suggested. I think the OP is insinuating that he may not want to deal him to an intra-division or even intra-conference team if avoidable and if offers are in the same range.
Harbaugh has never traded down in the 1st round, he has traded up but never down. I think Orunze will be his guy and he won't want to miss him.
Important decisions are made more with emotion than logic.
Of course, if there is a large gap in the compensation offered between two team, LAC takes the better offer. But what if the compensation is similar? I say emotion comes into play and Harbaugh would know JJM's preference on where to end up.
Let alone trading down with a division rival for his beloved college qb, no chance in hell imo

they would trade him to whichever team offered the best compensation package...like every other team would do. I don't see what is different about this situation.

They have 3 WRs on the active roster right now. Odunze has Harbaugh and the Chargers written all over him imo, when you have a special player you take him and that's both Harbaugh's philosophy and their gm Hoe Hortiz's philosophy. I'd be shocked if they traded down past 6.
He'd also be passing up Odunze whom is a top rated prospect in the draft at a position of their greatest need and also be passing up Nabers too.
We have to hope Arizona loves MHJ as if so this does create a strong probability of Giants being able to move to #5 to pick JJM or not move at all.

I don't agree with a thing you wrote here. If Harbaugh is making decisions based on what is best for JJM and not the Chargers, he has no business being in the position he is in.
And trading him intra-division is a different thing - most teams do not do that, especially with QBs.

I'm not suggesting Harbaugh is not acting in the best interests of the Chargers. I'm suggesting that it's possible, if not likely, that it's not clear what the best interest of the Chargers is. Suppose Pick 5 is up and LAC has 2 offers:
-NYG offers 6 and 108 (Rd 4)
-MIN offers 11 and 2025 Rd 2 pick (expected to be late Rd 2)
What is better for LAC? It's rarely 100% clear.
I'm also not suggesting Harbaugh is going to pick up the phone and call JJM to ask what he prefers. I'm suggesting Harbaugh knows JJM well enough to know what he prefers and will take it into consideration even if he doesn't explicitly say it or know it.
You cannot be so bold to think that decisions are always black and white. Emotions come into play here, more than anyone wants to admit.
The guy has no RBs, no WRs, a shaky Oline, and a defense that has consistently got torn apart but his main goal with a premium pick may be to help out a player from his previous college coaching job?
I honestly hate the month before the draft for just this reason. People get bored and come up with literal nonsense.
Great point. I did not consider that before. Thanks for bringing it up!
I understand he may have a soft spot for the player and if he really does think he is that good he would not want to play against him. Gaming the draft for division rivals has happened before. Supposedly Dallas did this to the Giants when they got Parsons and traded with Philly. Apparently they knew who the Giants wanted and knew they didn’t want Parsons so they got extra picks and the guy they wanted.
I don’t think he would put the player above his team though. Talking him up is one thing and taking a lesser trade is another

I think he could and probably would if the NYG offer up their 2nd rounder (#47 overall) to him to make sure they secure JJM.
Agreed. That would be the best move for the LAC and the NYG in that scenario.
