James Madison is targeting New York #Giants assistant offensive line coach Chris Smith for its offensive line coach opening, a source tells
@247sports
.

Before the Giants, Smith was the offensive coordinator and OL coach under new JMU head coach Bob Chesney at Holy Cross.
He's a great offensive mind and was most Holy Cross alums top choice

For HC when thei job was open. This would be a little bit of an odd move without some added titles, as the guy who replaced him (and worked under him) as Holy Cross OC is now the OC at JMU.

Chesney did take effectively every single coach with him to JMU, so I've been waiting for some news like this. Figured it was where he'd go if we fired him with Bobby Johnson.
of course!

our O-Line is great....just glad they are going to nab the assistant and not the coach himself

when Chris Smith was originally hired. The Giants OL has been terrible for 10 years and Schoen/Daboll hire a guy with zero NFL coaching experience? Nothing against Smith, but I thought this was a mistake from day one.

And remember that the coach that left, Tony Sparano Jr, had a ton of NFL experience. He left to head up the Colts O Line, and they finished 5th in the NFL last year.

With Smith still on staff, one can only presume that Carmen Bricillo was hired, knowing that he was getting Smith, and not allowed to pick his own Asst O Line coach.

With the normal coaches transitions after seasons end, we saw two potential candidates available- Cameron Clemmons and Travelle Wharton.

Clemmons was Bricillo's Asst at Las Vegas, but he recently signed to be the Asst O Line coach of the 49ers.

I thought Wharton was interesting because of his pro career. He had not been very successful as an OT, but made a very good move inside to OG and became a very good NFL player. I thought that could help with the coaching of Neal. Wharton recently signed to be the Asst O Line coach with the Baltimore Ravens.

If Smith leaves, I am sure the Giants will find a replacement. Can only hope its someone that has the ability to be part of a coaching group that can finally fix this O Line.

article is from 2018, but worth a read.

Chris Smith, the Giants current Asst O line coach, is the son of Jerry Smith, who coached Daboll in high school.

Likely the main reason that a coach with no prior NFL experience was chosen and hired to replace Tony Sparano, Jr. as our Asst O Line coach last year.

The article actually lists several other players coached by Jerry Smith that are now in various administrative roles in the NFL.

Well glad Smith is the best man for the job

And not a favor Daboll is repaying to his old football coach. Is it any wonder why the giants struggle…

Thanks for the info Y
