Should the Giants trade Azeez Ojulari

Archer : 3/18/2024 3:47 pm
With the Giants acquiring Banks, Azeez may be a luxury that they cannot afford.

Both Banks and Thibs are three-down players who rarely leave the field. Ojulari may have more value for a team who is looking for a pass rusher.

Ojulari when healthy can supply pressure. In 35 games that he has played in over (3) years, Ojulari has 16 sacks.

He can still be a good situational pass rusher.
He is in the last year of his rookie deal and will only be paid $1,580,000.
That is great value.

Likely, Azeez will not be with the Giants after this year as the Giants cannot tie that much money into edge defenders.

What value does he offer and what could the Giants get in a trade? Cold his trade help facilitate a trade up get a QB?
I think you mean Burns...

nope...
charles355 : 3/18/2024 3:53 pm : link
we need to keep him, he' ll be injury-free while not starting, he'll get 10 sacks and he'll sign somewhere else for lots of $$$ and we'll get comp pick

if Thibs or Burns miss time we will have him as a great 3rd pass rusher
No way
Rich F : 3/18/2024 3:53 pm : link
At this point best they would get is a 7th round pick. If they keep him, the worst case is he is cheap depth, but if he puts up good numbers he might sign in 2025 for enough to earn a comp pick.
We have no depth anywhere...
knowledgetimmons : 3/18/2024 3:53 pm : link
why get rid of a cheap ER to make that depth problem even more pervasive?

Nobody would trade better than a 5th for Ojular, IMO. He's not been healthy, ever.
I wouldn't.
Matt M. : 3/18/2024 3:53 pm : link
He provides some depth as a situational pass rusher. Relying on him as a starter certainly didn't work out. But, you need someone who can spell KT or Burns.
I’d love to see a NASCAR approach
George : 3/18/2024 3:56 pm : link
To the pass rush. No blitzing - just four to the floor.

Ojulari can be a good part of this: I think we should keep him.

I've had similar thoughts for a scheme to dial up a few times a game.
can never have enough pass rushers

I agree with this.

Also, what do you think you would get for him?

Exactly. He should stay healthy HOPEFULLY with less snaps. He has shown he can produce in smaller spourts playing time wise so this should be more ideal for him and the team.
I wouldn't trade him for anything less than a 2nd rounder
djm : 3/18/2024 4:10 pm : link
he's worth more to NYG even if just for one more year.
no
Rjanyg : 3/18/2024 4:12 pm : link
We have no depth and I doubt we would get much for him.
To add to it, the adage about never having enough pass rushers
Matt M. : 3/18/2024 4:14 pm : link
holds here. They went from having a hugely inconsistent pass rush for the last few years, to now having two book end rushers with Dex in the middle. But, thinking that's enough without accounting for injuries, guys needing a breather, etc. is insane.

What I am hoping for is that we get legitimate DEs for whatever scheme we run (3-4 or 4-3). Burns may be considered for a DE in 4-3, but personally I'd like to see both him and KT as OLBs.
I
AcidTest : 3/18/2024 4:15 pm : link
would at least inquire about doing so.

David B. : 3/18/2024 4:15 pm : link
He's more valuable if he could stay a little healthy and play than anything they'd get for him in return.

No, you always have to think about the possibility of a front-line starter tearing an ACL.

He has little trade value right now and he's cheap.

Or at least have both of them be able to fill in at both OLB and DE. I don't think either is really suited to play DE in a 3-4. That was part of the problem with Wink's D. We had no real DL and a big reason we couldn't stop the run. However, both these guys could probably play a 4-3 DE, at least part time. I wouldn't want either doing it full time as I think it will take a lot out of them and both have exhibited enough in their ability to play a true OLB position to at least think of them that way.

In case you didn't notice, I am not partial the EDGE title/position.
Azeez trade value
Archer : 3/18/2024 4:18 pm : link
I would not trade him for a fifth-round pick.
But what is his value?

Here is a comparison between two players.

AO (23, 6'-3" 240 lbs) 3-years -35 games 77 tackles 45 solos 16 sacks

X (25, 6'-3" 255 lbs) 4-years -54 games 55 tackles 31 solos 17.5 sacks

Player X has been on IR with an ankle injury, IR with a back injury, and has missed time due to an oblique injury. Yet he just signed a 3-year contract $51,000,000 contract.

This player is Bryce Huff. I think that Huff and Azeez have had similar careers and this establishes Ojilari's potential value.

Azeez

Would you include him in a trade to move up to select a QB ?

No, but I also wouldn't advocate trading up for the a QB. Trading up for either Williams or Daniels don't seem very likely. As such, I do not feel strongly enough about Maye or McCarthy to trade up for either. IF the Giants like one of them enough to take them at 6, I hope they are correct. I just wouldn't give anything up to take either one higher than where they're currently at.

That said, I felt similarly in 2004. I thought Eli was the best guy in the draft. But, I would have stayed put and taken Roethlisberger. Once they made the deal, I was 100% on board because they still got the best QB in the draft. I believed that then and still do.
Hopefully, he can elevate his game and stay healthy
Beer Man : 3/18/2024 4:36 pm : link
I long for the days the Giants had the 3-head monster pass-rush.
No, because whether they trade him now, or wait a year or so,
barens : 3/18/2024 4:39 pm : link
the value won't change, which would be minimal. If he ball out and stays healthy, that is only a bonus.
His value is low right now
regulator : 3/18/2024 4:52 pm : link
let him play for a contract and try to stay healthy for a full year.
Trade value is low
UConn4523 : 3/18/2024 4:54 pm : link
Don’t see the point. He’s still cheap and maybe less reps will be good for him. Can also start if needed if healthy.
its a question that doesn't contain enough info
Somers24 : 3/18/2024 5:07 pm : link
Should the Giants trade AO if the offer was...

RD1, 2 or 3 pick = yes
RD4 - I'd consider it.
RD 5-7 = no
Sure, trade him if you can get some value as he
nygiantfan : 3/18/2024 5:07 pm : link
has so little value on the roster because he can't be relied upon to play very often. Started 7 games last year and only 5 the year before that.

It is rare when he plays a game that he actually finishes it. And even if he does, he most likely will be on the injury list the next week and be limited in varying fashion. An asset that you can't rely upon isn't really an asset.
A luxury we can't afford?
j_rud : 3/18/2024 5:10 pm : link
He's inconsistent depth with a spotty health record. Can't afford how, exactly?
Do you people even remember

This, to the point where I wouldn't mind if we drafted Dallas Turner.

Wouldn't get much, and he's the best backup we have at the position.

As to his unreliability, are his injuries of the type that are likely to recur, or has he just been unlucky? Injury-proneness is a fallacy, except for hamstrings. And concussions are more likely in a person who has had them before.
Who plays if
bLiTz 2k : 3/18/2024 5:41 pm : link
Burns or Thibs goes down?

What about a rotation on the line?

Also and most importantly ..

His trade value would barely be a 6th rounder. Is that worth giving away a 1 year cheap depth piece that has performed at a high level when healthy?

No offense but trading him would be asinine.
Ask this question again at the trade deadline`

Azeez is playing great
And a team needs an Edge
And the Giants season is cooked
Then trade
Else
let him play out the string

Nope.

His trade value is a 5th at best. Better to keep him as a backup and wouldn't sign him to another contract.
His value is at its lowest.
Section331 : 3/18/2024 9:21 pm : link
He hasn’t been able to stay healthy, and even then, was not very good last year. If he can contribute this year, maybe he’ll have value at the deadline. I like Azeez, but you’d be selling low at this point.

This defense has serious potential if it can stay healthy and the young guys develop like Banks, Flott, Hawkins and Pinock.

I'll go out on a limb and say this defense could make a huge, huge leap up if it generates heat from multiple angles with Burns, Lawrence and Thibs with Ojulari playing a lot as well.

The potential is there I think so you pray for a great draft, a good healthy camp and some luck.
