he played 3 different positions in 3 yrs at Bama, came to NY and they asked him to change a bunch of techniques for pass protection. Plus, not staying healthy has killed his growth.
IF he can play this FULL season, I think he’ll be fine. If not, they will move on.
If he can’t stay healthy, he’s not a solution for guard either.
I refuse to believe Evan Neal is THIS bad, or a lot of people in the league just whiffed if so. There was a thread this past weekend where someone was giving Joe grief for the Neal pick, which was absurd. He was a consensus top 10 pick. I remember mocks in the months/weeks leading up to the '22 draft & some had Neal going first overall to Jacksonville. Don't forget that Dallas had him & Thibs 1-2 on their draft board.
I don't know what's going on with him. He seems to be putting in the work, but it hasn't shown up on the field. But its getting late...let's hope this new OL coach can fix him or the dude might be out of the league soon.
inability to recognize and react to stunts, inability to sustain blocks, oft injured, questions about his ability to handle the pressure of being in New York. Peart's game against Philly week 18 was far better than any game of Neal.
And he's easily passed by faster DE's. Meaning he's slow.
My thought on his going to guard would mean it'd be hard to just go around him when he has a tackle and center next to him. And I refuse to believe that a DT or NT can simply move him out of the way.
I think the Giants give him another chance at RT and kick him inside mid-season if needed.
He’s had as rough a first 2yrs as anyone I can remember..
Between injuries, bad coaching, and lack of reps in preseason games. I really hope he’s fully healthy this off season so he can work out, train and be a full go in mini camps and training camp.
My biggest critique of Daboll is that they didn’t give the starters hardly any reps in preseason games. I’m sorry, joint practices and camp is still different than a live game. They need the 5 starters to play more in the preseason to gel. I feel if he’s healthy, gets enough reps with good coaching and solid dependable vets next to him he’s going to be fine. God I hope I’m right.
Other than AT, who is a phenom, I just don't think we can coach OL
or devise schemes that were worth af. Or at least maybe we couldn't before Bricillo got here (wishful thinking).
A guy like Kevin Zeitler was regarded as one of the top OG in the league. Comes to NYG and is trash. Leaves and resurrects his career with BAL and is again one of the best. Just got paid on yet another contract with DET.
Same thing happened, to a lesser degree, with Geoff Schwartz. Mark Glowinski. Marshall Newhouse. John Jerry.
Hernandez sucks here and goes to ARI and does pretty well. Flowers pulls his career out of the ditch when moving to OG and playing for WAS. Bobby Hart was a disaster with NYG and has had a decent career in CIN since then.
David Baas and JD Walton both pretty much sucked at OC after coming to the Giants but were good/decent before.
I'm sure these examples may carry injury asterisks in some instances, but good grief we have been a disaster on the OL for almost the past 15 years!
watching video of Neal, box jumps as well as scouting reports and highlight packages before he was drafted and being very impressed. Disappointed and shocked with the way his career has turned out so far.
Of his poor play is what he surrounded by …be interesting to see what he like this season healthy and with perhaps some more talented players around him
help Neal become a guard? Based on just how light footed and off balance he is, the fact that edge rushers are blurring past him as he starts backing up, waving at attackers….outside line positions are, as he has shown…..are a threat to the nyg quarterbacks.
He stood on those Bama tapes where he dominated with his size and a youtube video of him doing split leg box jumps (which was incredible I must admit). But he avoided doing any combine work which would exposed his lack of foot speed and quickness.
He always had poor balance but facing athletes he does in the NFL wasn't not exposed at the college level.
I hope he gets healthy and Bric can turn his career around, but I'm not optimistic cause he has a lot of work to do and he should be competing for that spot at this point.
