What if the Giants Zig while others Zag

Jay7852 : 3/21/2024 6:53 am
Would definitely be interesting if the Giants just completely load up on defense this draft. Trade back at 6 for a haul (leaking the JJ McCarthy love could entice some teams about trading up to 6, maybe Vikings). Draft a stud corner or two, defensive line help, maybe another linebacker. Play ball control offense (and set up roster for QB of the future) and just dominate on defense. Brian Burns, Dexter Lawrence, Kayvon, Okereke, Banks are all here for the foreseeable future, would be cool to absolutely dominate one side of the ball. The top ranked scoring defenses last year were the Chiefs, Ravens, Bills, 49ers.

with them trading with the Vikings to get #11 and #23 gets some points for at least being different. It has them taking Odunze and then Byron Murphy at DT. That would be a prime Giants level DL, but losing the other 2nd would sting.
Anything is possible

I really think Daboll is chomping at turning this offense into a consistent scoring machine. Ranking 30th or worse in the league is not what Daboll envisioned after 2 years in NY.

Add to this, the draft seems too heavy in offense. QB, WR, OL are the strongest groups.

I can see Schoen going CB or DT in round 2, but there could be a really good WR there and we need to add to that group.
I'm not against this approach but it is foolish to completely

ise the argument that the Chiefs, Ravens, Bills, and Niners were the best defenses last year. Part of having the best defenses os offenses that can control the clock and move the ball. All the teams listed have great offenses too.

Get the #1 receiver in first round.

Mediocre receivers getting paid 10+ million a year.

True #1s getting 30 million.
That money can be used on defense.
I would not have a issue

with it and think it would be a smart approach if executed well. I also agree with robbieballs point.

I would welcome a offense that had TE's that could block, a good OL with capable RB's and run your offense based on a very good running game or at least one that is good enough to achieve some balance. Like the Giants used to do when they were actually a really good team. Just about every Giants win that Daboll has had here had this.

When the defense would come off the field and tell the offense to hold 'em.

Can’t the same be said bout Cornerbacks and pass rushers?
I would rather find a mid round gem WR than be looking for stud corners and pass rushers in the middle/ late rounds
No QB no Hope

Giants will be a headless corpse again. Defense won't matter with no points. WR won't matter with no QB. Another 5-12 season hoping Lock can save us . Split hairs all you want but there is no hope until we have a QB that can make plays .

So their mock trade was 11 and 23 for 6 and 47, and Odunze was still there at 11 for the Giants. The reality is that's not enough for #6 because there's no guarantee Odunze would be there. If the Vikings want a QB so bad they'll have to give 11 + 23 + a cherry on top just for the 6, and that's only if the Giants have Brian Thomas Jr as highly ranked as the other 3 guys like Simms does, that they are more than ok with potentially getting him instead of one of the other 3.
Giants took care of a lot of needs on offense during free agency.
Ivan15 : 3/21/2024 9:28 am : link
They need a QB and WR#1 but getting into the 3rd day of the draft, the biggest needs are for depth on defense. So my guess is that 3 or more picks will be defense.
Defense hasn’t necessarily been our problem
Rudy5757 : 3/21/2024 9:42 am : link
We can’t score points. We held some teams below 20 and still lost. We need at least one guy who is a threat to score on any play. Barkley was supposed to be that guy but he lost that ability years ago.

Don’t give up the opportunity to get a star for 2 good players. Stars make others better. Good players just plug holes. Schoen hasn’t drafted a star yet.
I wouldn't hate this..
Fishmanjim57 : 3/22/2024 10:45 am : link
Building a powerful Defence, as well as restructure the OL would be brilliant. I have no faith in Jones to preform well, but I think Lock could benefit this scenario. Instead of focusing on the top QB's, the Giants could get a decent prospect who's coachable from the 2nd or 3rd round.
Wrong draft to put a lot of focus on Defense.
ThomasG : 3/22/2024 11:05 am : link
Some guys on Day 2 will be able to contribute in the trenches and a few at CB/Safety, but weak draft for anything special on D. Particularly at the top of the draft.
A ball-control offense?
Section331 : 3/22/2024 11:05 am : link
With whom? The OL should be better, but how much better? I like Singletary, but he’s a step down from Saquon. We still lack talent at QB and WR, our defense better be 2000 Ravens good.
ive thought a lot about the last line your post re kc/sf/bal

3 best teams
3 best scoring D

the defense is closer to an elite unit than the offense, so i really don't hate the idea if that's the way the cookie crumbled.

with the way the market for the 4 qbs has developed, i do get the sense that the NYG odds of picking a top 4 QB have lowered from where I initially expected them to be.

i think the most likely outcome at this point is nabers or odunze, but a trade down like you've suggested to take a top defensive player in the teens while adding more picks could also make a lot of sense.
