Kurt Warner on Drake Maye

Hilary : 3/22/2024 12:24 pm
Kurt has the same opinion as Phil Simms. He has a good arm but does not have consistent foot work and misses too many open receivers on routes he should be able to complete.

Everyone seems to like Williams. Most like Daniels-though not as much as Williams.

Opinions vary widely on the others.

Mrs. Eric says 2 of the top 4 quarterbacks will not be good.

Is Warner Still Bad-Mouthing Eli?

Don't trust anything he says and he should give the gold jacket back.
I think that if Maye goes to a team where

he has to start right away and is not set at Oline and wr he will fail. The Patriots come to mind.

Agreed. Rookie QB development and success hinges greatly on the coaching around him. He has elite traits and if there are things to work on with his fundamentals I trust this coaching staff to correct them.
People (including some NFL elites)
Sammo85 : 3/22/2024 12:50 pm : link
criticized Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes incessantly for perceived physical gaits or limitations.

However, those three are all top 5 QBs in NFL today.

You’re not picking Maye
GiantGrit : 3/22/2024 1:02 pm : link
For what he is today, you’re picking him for what he can develop into. That’s a high end starting QB. Strong similarities to Josh Allen’s warts when he came out ; look what he is now. His flaws can be fixed, agreed that he should barely touch the field year 1 though.

Everyone has a type, Maye fits the type of Schoen & Daboll.

The big concern for me in regards to Maye is how he seems to break down under pressure regularly failing to get off his first read, running into sacks and throwing interceptions when under duress. Sure, he could get his footwork down better and mechanics down better when under pressure which might help, but this seems more like a mental reaction to pressure that could be exposed in the NFL with bigger, faster guys.

The footwork and mechanical stuff is no big deal, but this mental response to pressure is a big concern to me and a primary reason why I like JJM more.

Funny!

Great player. Deserves the jacket. Lousy on TV as an analyst.
Not every prospect is perfect.
DeVito32 : 3/22/2024 1:24 pm : link
A lot of rookie QB’s come in and have to change their footwork and arm angles/releases and such. This is why you have coaches to work on these things.

QB’s in college get into bad habits sometimes. Whether it’s trying to do too much to carry the team, loses talent around them from the year before and playing teams far superior than them.

Don’t forget one of the biggest knocks on Josh Allen was his accuracy. Even in his first 2 years in the pros was very rough. Now look. Coaching matters.
I think Warner does a great job on TV
Go Terps : 3/22/2024 1:30 pm : link
And he was a hell of a quarterback.
I like Warner's analysis, year in year out
Dave on the UWS : 3/22/2024 1:46 pm : link
He doesn't bash or beat up. He explains and then shows you on the tape- why! Anytime I watch one of his blackboard type sessions, I come away with better understanding. That's a good analyst!
Maye is 6' 4" 230 lbs.
Rjanyg : 3/22/2024 2:06 pm : link
He is a very good athlete and is pretty tough.

You can teach size. He seems to have several types of throws as well, not just a fast ball.

This entire QB group is very intriguing as they all have different styles and stories. I think at least 4 of the 6 QBs at the top will have pretty good careers.

This is exactly why I dont want the Giants to draft him. If we trade up, how on earth are we going to have the opportunity to add WR, TE and RB talent? Its not available in FA and we also have a lack of funds there too.

Youre setting him up to fail.

And why couldn’t we add more talent around him in year two?

Just because you don’t have all the skill players around him in his first year….in no way shape or form does that mean he is being set up to fail

Exactly, the rookie will not start out the gate whether it's JJM or DM. He will sit half a year to a year. I think JJM would be much better suited to the NFL game and the constant pressure faced from opposing defenses. Maye's tendencies to lock onto options, not see the field, run into sacks and throw interceptions under pressure could be greatly worsened in the NFL and its very risky to project that weakness being coached out of him if it's just how his mind reacts to pressure.
Like Simms, it seems like more of an assessment of where he is now
widmerseyebrow : 3/22/2024 2:46 pm : link
rather than a forecast.

It'd be more helpful to hear a comp of someone who had a similar issue with mechanics in college and how they did in the NFL.
you mean like Josh Allen
Dave on the UWS : 3/22/2024 2:54 pm : link
go back and look at his highlight tapes coming out of college and then look at some of his throws as a pro. His footwork and throwing motion were much sloppier in college.
Both Maye and JJ have things to clean up.
But they both have a TON of talent.
Both would be an upgrade to Jones, and with Daboll and Tierney's coaching, could become top tier starters.

It's not a one year rebuild, it's going to take another year or two to build around any QB you draft now.

It might include a lousy 2024, or he might be the catalyst the franchise has lacked since OBJ's prime.
I'm not a fan of Kurt Warner
arniefez : 3/22/2024 3:12 pm : link
I'll take his word for it regarding Maye. I certainly couldn't make an educated evaluation. But as much as I dislike Warner and as much as Phil Simms is one of my football hero's and my favorite Giant of all time, the only evaluation of the 2024 QB draft class that matters to me is the one Schoen and Daboll make. Whatever they decide to do I hope they get it right or the Giants may be starting over again in 2025.
I think too many are trying hard to convince themselves
Festina Lente : 3/22/2024 3:56 pm : link
That his issues don't matter so much becausr he's physically gifted. I am not willing to take that gamble but will see what the bossmen say.
I also see footwork issues with Maye
Biteymax22 : 3/22/2024 4:25 pm : link
And also McCarthy. Maye rushes his and McCarthy isn’t as consistent working left as he is right.

Both are fixable by good QB coaches. We have 3 good QB coaches.
Most players coming out of college
section125 : 3/22/2024 5:11 pm : link
have technique flaws to be corrected.

Just get one of the QBs and let Tierney, Kafka and Daboll clean them up.

As far as talent on the team, a better Qb will get more out of the existing WRs than we have seen.

Does this apply to Daniel Jones too? I keeed!
Key difference
JonC : 3/22/2024 9:53 pm : link
Maye's 2022 film was high end and often elite.

Jones never could demonstrate the same.

ryanmkeane : 3/22/2024 10:33 pm : link
Maye’s pro upside is significantly higher than McCarthy’s. If you think he’s s good kid and will put in the work to be great there would be zero reason to have McCarthy higher than Maye.
