Giants-related... super proud of my wife

Eric from BBI : Admin : 3/22/2024 5:15 pm
So we're at my daughter's college orientation today and we're in the Fine Arts department's photography studio. And buried in the middle of about a 100 photos on the wall is this picture...

My wife turns to me and says, "Hey look, it's Y.A. Tittle!"

I picked the right girl.
Haha,

A little tidbit fom a 70's book entitled Great Quarterbacks of the NFL. Y.A.: "I knew it was time to retire when Gary Wood (backup QB) asked me if he could date my daughter".

'64 in Pittsburgh right? I think that ran on the front page of the NY Times too. Up there as one of the best sports photographs of all time.

Post and asked her who it was. She shook her head. I said never mind and looked at me like " how would I know?" I guess I ll just be happy she puts up with all my Giants stuff and talk and knows whenever they or for that matter any football game I want to watch is on she leaves me alone even if I scream or swear at the TV.
Wasn’t that the Championship Game

We lost to the Bears…I think 14-10? 1963 maybe?
Hate to talk about my age
dune69 : 3/22/2024 6:59 pm : link
but that game and Tittle's effort is still ingrained in my brain. I was very young, but no longer.

I'm almost positive it was '64 in Pittsburgh. The beginning of the 'Wilderness Years'.

I believe we lost the '63 Championship game in Chicago 14-10. I think we went up 7-0, but then Tittle got injured & our offense was never the same. That was like a month after JFK's assassination too.

That was our third straight NFL Championship game loss, as the Packers had beaten us in '61 & '62.

I did some work for him years ago.
This is a bit long.
I worked in the business planning dept of a financial firm and my phone rang.
I answer the phone and this guy starts rambling, his son in law did not leave him the info he needed for a meeting.
I told him no problem I will take care of it.
At this point I have no idea of whom I am talking with.
We had a nice a conversation as I compiled the plans and I asked him if he wanted his name on it.
He said sure, "Y.A Tittle".
I said,"Wow two Y.A Tittles".
He asked what I meant.
I said, "you and the Giant QB".
He started laughing and said that's me.
We had a brief conversation as he had a meeting.
Two days late I get a Fedex package, it's from him with that picture.
On the bottom it says "To Jeff-"Nothing is easy".
Signed Y.A. Tittle H.O.F. 1971
Never spoke with him again.

Giants gladiator beaten down, that year, but with pride intact. The Giants lost to the Packers (the better teams) in '61 & '62, I got over those, The loss to the Bears, in '63, when YA went out injured hurt the most, EVER.

By '64 they had nothing left in the tank (I'm talking about the WHOLE team).
I remember the 7 touchdown pass

game against the Redskins. It (almost) shocked me to find that in 60 years and around 1000 games and dozens of quarterbacks who were more athletic, no one had thrown eight.

Here’s the company that he kept:

Peyton Manning, Nick Foles, Drew Brees, Sid Luckman, George Blanda, Joe Kapp, Adrian Burk and Y.A. Tittle.

Does she ask you if you think they hear you when you yell at the tv? Mine used to do that, but after 46+ years with me, I think she realizes how seriously I take Giants' games.

I find it interesting that would be displayed in the fine arts department as well. Must be a great school!

"On September 20th, 1964, the Giants played the Pittsburgh Steelers at Pitt Stadium. During the game, Tittle was knocked to the ground by John Baker of the Steelers, and threw an interception that was returned for a touchdown. Without his helmet on and blood trickling from his head, Tittle brought himself to his knees in the endzone, concussed and with a broken sternum. At that moment, Morris Berman of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette snapped a photo of Tittle's sorry state".

I was watching that game on TV when he was injured and his head bleeding. My mother came into the room and was alarmed that I was crying. I will never forget that day. It was like my hero was slayed by the enemy. Once a Giant fan always a Giant fan.

Thank you,
It's funny now that I live in Portugal when people come in my home they have no idea who it is what kind of sport it is.
Great picture and great wife.
