So I tried to get tickets to Dune on Tuesday and all the decent imax seats within 45 mins were already gone. Already had the sitter so we saw Love Lies Bleeding instead. Will be polarizing but I really liked it. Crime/thriller centered around female bodybuilding, domestic violence, and gun running. Great performances from Kristen Stewart and creepy Ed Harris as well as newcomer Katy O'Brian, a female martial artist/body builder who found the role after jokingly posting about being cast on Twitter. Really loved the way it was shot and would be interested in seeing what else the director (Rose Glass) does. Gets some visceral reactions and blends humor with the horrible, some really fun scenes.
What have you seen recently (no spoilers)?
American Fiction and The Holdovers are excellent films that you just sit back and enjoy.
Zone of Interest is similar to Poor Things, in a class by itself. A very different experience.
Another one on stars called sizu. Ww2. Finland. Just watch it.
Sounds like an interesting documentary. A priest from my hometown who spent a few decades in a gulag, Fr Walter Ciszek, had been in the canonization process for awhile now.
I liked it. Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson in a historical fiction account (not entirely fiction, in fact I have read the story has a lot of truth to it, but some) about the two retired Texas Rangers who hunted and ultimate found Bonnie and Clyde.
I liked it because it was a story I did not know much about and I'll watch almost anything Costner and/or Harrelson are in.

"Sisu" is terrific. There's very little dialog, but the story is riveting.
Our tastes really seem similar based on these threads, think you're gonna like it. Dave Franco was really good too. Not a bad performance in the movie. I just told my wife I'd pay to see it again, which is about the highest praise I give a movie.

I have 2 kids and am in the last year of a clinical SW program, most "new" movies I see are exactly what you described lol. I remember seeing this advertised but never got to see it. I only get to the theaters for something big like Dune.
Speaking of popcorn movies if you liked Fury Road the trailer for the Furiosa origin movie looks *amazing*

I actually had read about Fr Ciszek just recently. Very interesting and holy man. I hope he gets the sainthood. Thanks for sharing.

He was friends with my grandmother as children. They lived on Jardin St near the railroad tracks, and their yard backed up to Cisek's on West St, just up the hill from the greatest Polish deli/kielbasa, Kowalonek's. I actually went to the elementary school named for him.

my wife is dying to see it next time we have a free night, and A24 doesn’t miss.

A24 is great. I always get a kick out of the “Hollywood isn’t original” comments when there’s a bunch of movies like this that come out every year.
and in parallel I usually always have at least one book I'm reading and I am currently re-reading the Iliad (for maybe the 4th or 5th time) and I wondered if back in 750 or 740 BC whenever it was "officially" written, did the local Greeks of that era feel like "f-ing Homer, another Odysseus book? the guy has no original thoughts" when he followed up the Iliad with the Odyssey. just made myself laugh a little and realize this kind of thing has been going on forever. probably literally. Maybe not to this extent but if time does nothing else it carries more mass/accumulates more stuff.

I’m supposed to see Late Night with the Devil on Tuesday, how did you like it?
I'm looking forward to this. David Dastmalchian is good in every role he has, a fair number of them odd. Feel like he's working on a Harry Dean Stanton career.

They did a really good job of recreating that late 70's talk show vibe.

Seems to be a thing lately. If you didn't know any better The Holdovers could've been filmed in '71.
9 parts each episode is about an hour. Covers the build up to Hiroshima/Nagasaki all the way to current day. I am 4 parts in. Riveting.

There are some good original movies out there, but there’s no denying film making is dominated by reboots and super hero crap. Explosions and special effects sell in China.

J Rud, Late Night With the Devil was awesome. Haven’t had that much fun with a horror movie in a while, in fact, fun doesn’t typically describe horror which I think is what impressed me most. Very clever storytelling, and good performances by the whole cast.
