NFT: Gettysburg follow-up (college and battlefield)

pjcas18 : 3/24/2024 11:44 am
first of all, I can't thank you all enough for the advice. I go places and it's like I did research, but just really drawing on the collective wisdom and experience of this place. Just got home last night from our recruiting visit/tour and my daughter fell in love with the college.

We have toured/had recruiting visits at Field Hockey schools like Skidmore, Tufts, Wesleyan and some lower level D1's and my daughter felt like culturally Gettysburg is "her people" and she would fit in athletically, academically and culturally (which is as important IMO) especially compared with somewhere like Skidmore where the culture seemed VERY different (as much as I would have liked to visit Saratoga Springs every year for parents weekend).

As for the battlefield, I could only do the car audio tour and museum - we only had 4 hours while my daughter was with the team, and I felt robbed, definitely on my list to go back I was just in awe after reading The Killer Angels (can't wait to get to the others in the series). Next time I would like a guide, but I don't regret what we got to see - also it was 40 degrees and pouring rain.

Anyway, better hope the coach likes her a lot because 80 grand a year is ridiculous for a college (if she even gets accepted which is no guarantee despite being very strong academically and athletically). I know they are D-III but I feel like if the coach wants you to play there they find ways to make it work. My daughter plays multiple sports, lol, I told her to reach out to the other coaches (lacrosse and ice hockey - but no ice hockey team unfortunately).

thank you all again

In case you want any other info, I'm well versed in all things Skidmore or Saratoga Springs. I've been working at the college for a long time. It's definitely not for everyone.

Are written by the author’s son. They are a pale substitute.

My daughter played D3 lax in college. They really need to go somewhere they love for the community. My daughter started from her freshman year. That said, Covid killed two of my daughters four years and her best friend on the team tore her ACL twice. College sports is really short even if nothing adverse happens. Make sure she is happy for everything the school offers because there are no guarantees.

EW, My son has an internship in Saratoga this summer. Any ideas where he can get housing from Mid May to early Aug? Maybe sublease from a Skidmore student? Any ideas would be helpful. Thanks.

and loved the experience, not cheap but what college is anymore (hard to imagine I went Cal State Chico and it cost about $300 a semester back in the early 80's!). Loved visiting her there and checking out all the history. Good luck!

My daughter loved the field hockey team at Skidmore, seemed like a good group, and liked the campus, but during the campus tour seeing the campus life it was made it seem like a bad fit, I won't elaborate, Skidmore's track record as an educational institution speaks for itself, it's called a hidden Ivy or little Ivy (or something like that) for a reason, but maybe that's also part of the reason for the bad fit in our case. And it was probably an academic stretch.

80k!? Holly!

How much Merit Aid will your daughter get from the college?

My daughter played D3 FH as well. The college gave her the Max Merit aid they give. That helped a lot.

Not sure, she's a junior in High School. so she hasn't even applied yet. She will do a couple more college showcase events and see who else is interested, but at that price if she doesn't get a lot of merit she's not going even if money was no object. If she even gets in. She is a straight A student, national honor society, junior captain on FH, 3-sport player, does a bunch of volunteer work, but these days sometimes that's not even enough for the privilege to pay 80 grand a year. college sucks. lol.

They’re certainly not Pulitzer Prize material but I think “pale shadow” is unfair.

Jeff Shaara has now written around 20 books done in his father’s literary style. They cover every major US war from the Revolutionary to the Korean. ”The Killer Angels” and “The Last Full Measure” were his first two, covering the events before and after Gettysburg in the eastern theater of the war. Much later he wrote a 4 part series on the western theater of the war. Also of interest to the Civil War buff is “Gone for Soldiers” about the Mexican-American war. It throws an interesting light on the early careers of many prominent Civil War figures including Lee, Jackson, Grant and Longstreet.

Most students live on campus. It's going to be wicked tough/expensive finding something, since Saratoga is hosting the Belmont in June.

That being said - there are plenty of places in town that rent out for the summer.

If he is going to have a car, might be better off looking for a place outside the city. Maybe Clifton Park, Malta, Ballston Spa. All are fairly short (less than 30 minutes) drive into town.

Speaking of Killer Angels, going to visit cousin in Maine NFL draft weekend. We are planning on hitting up the Joshua Chamberlain Museum. Very stoked.
My son is named after him

My son got the max merit aid award from Connecticut College (another baby ivy) and our nut was still $40K. They wouldn't budge on their offer. He chose not to go there.

She is not really a D1 caliber player. Maybe some lower level D1's but then I feel like they don't match up academically (like possibly Stonehill for example - no offense to Stonehill - fine school, just not a fit for my daughter). And all our D1 visits the coaches put sports first (and probably that's how they should prioritize things since they're basically paying for you to play sports). For example, Gettysburg has a really good study abroad program. so many places to choose from and it's strongly encouraged even for the field hockey team (in Spring though - Fall is FH season). Currently 13 juniors from the field hockey team are studying abroad. My daughter really wants to do this. at BC during a visit someone in the group we were in asked the associate head coach if they supported study abroad and he said "we play field hockey, we don't study abroad". Just struck me as an asshole-ish attitude, but appreciated the honesty.

none of these athletes are going on to play professional field hockey (AFAIK it doesn't even exist), so yeah sure there is a level of commitment you would expect players to make to a team, even in D3, but usually I find the focus is at least split on academics/college life/athletics in D3 and more about sports in D1 (so far in my experience).

So, while my daughter might push to get on a D1 roster and get some money, it's unlikely the right fit for her and what she wants from college. Which is unfortunate for me. lol.

Good undergraduate education at any of them. Culture fit is very important if she has to be there for 4 years. Sports probably not so important except for cultural fit.

I went to Hamilton, almost 60 years ago. A lot of people didn’t like being so isolated back then.
