Would the NFL ever change their HS drafting rules

GFAN52 : 3/25/2024 10:15 am
Curious why some HS player or College Freshman hasn’t tried challenging in court the current rule:

“To be eligible for the draft, players must have been out of high school for at least three years”
Didn't Maurice Clarett

try to do that and fail? he flamed out of the NFL too.. I think unlike Basketball, players need seasoning, coaching and time in a more professional program before hitting the NFL.
With the change in NCAA

and NIL, yes I could se them changing the rules. The NFL is no longer buying players away from college, so not competing against colleges as previous.
It's for their safety.

Young men don't reach physical maturity until their early 20s.
The demands on the body required by playing professional football is very different than those for baseball, hockey or basketball who are able to draft 18-year olds out of high school.
The NIL angle is interesting

As Wally said, I think by and large the human body is not mature enough and the players are not skilled enough to compete at the NFL level at 18 or 19.

But I could see the NFL and its teams wanting to find a way to get the rights to physical specimens and circumvent the draft altogether. That of course would break the current model in the NFL so I could also see the NFL wanting to get ahead of that and maybe move college closer to what you see in baseball with an official minor league. It'd be a major shift so maybe the NFL just keeps the 3 years (or is it 2?) removed from high school rule.
HS draft for NFL?

I don't see this happening because of the violent contact in playing NFL football. Young developing bodies could be permanently damaged

What if you’re a phenomenal hs or college freshman field goal kicker?
HS football has changed big time

Since the transfer portal.
College is similar to the NFL now

Transfer portal - Free agency
High School recruiting - Draft.

High School players are picking lower level schools to play earlier and get paid only to transfer to top schools when there are openings and they are developed vs. Sitting on a bench for 2 years.
Most College Freshmen are not ready physically to play in high level college besides jumping to the NFL and with the money available in college why would you jump to the NFL to make less money?

these glorified gym teachers cant project college seniors who last played 90 days ago, you want to let them try their hands at 17 year olds?

Good luck.
It's a good question...

I saw Trevor Lawrence play in high school. And I have no doubt he would have been a lottery pick if he was eligible. He was just so physically gifted and mature.

So, it's probably debatable for certain positions over others.

To me, if a team wants to gamble on a player in his teens based on subjective criteria, why not? Everything about the draft is essentially subjective...
