because he doesn't have a problem. I saw the headline on NJ.com but I don't have a subscription to their publication. I put the link in in case some of you have one. If this is what's still in his head, it probably won't end well for him. I know this first hand, as I've had to battle the same thing. I hope the best for him and his health.

maybe he is and does need to stop drinking completely, maybe he doesn't, but how does anyone here pretend to know?

I don't think anyone in here is pretending to know about his exact situation. What I can say, is that reasonable conclusions can be made from his publicized actions. Speaking from experience, the first issue is the denial of a problem. He said he drank the night before but admits he was out of control with his temper. I'm confident that the Yankees don't just give up on pitching talent like his without a documented history of his behavior. Remember, it took the Pirates most of the spring just to sign him to a very low risk contract.

I'm not saying he doesn't have a problem, but I am saying every time a person denies that they have a problem isn't "denial" they could legitimately not have an alcohol problem. And the baggage of domestic violence is and should be enough to give teams pause about signing the player without any alcohol issues and sometimes the team he is on when the incident occurs has to cut ties with the player for the good of both parties. I do believe in redemption, but sometimes it has to happen elsewhere - even for good pitchers.

Yes.

It's clear drinking is a problematic factor in his life, seems like the people here negating that idea don't know the nature of this beast firsthand.
My understanding is that a lot of people who go sober slip up at some point, so go easy on your friend if it ever happens (and I hope it doesn't).

with the first two posts. I helped a friend with their drinking problem a few years back and I would have been devastated if they had continued to drink after being fired for it.

Good call, tough love can push them further away and deeper into their hole

I was lucky, as my friend self-corrected and drastically reduced their drinking before the hole got that deep and their drinking started to affect their job performance.
I don't think they are in danger of a relapse as they have developed other coping mechanisms to deal with the world
