Thank you Dan and Optimas. After NY Giants football this is the second best thing about this site!
Ditto to this. I grew up reading Baseball America before I hit puberty. With a demanding career, wife, and 4 daughters don't always keep up on it like I used to. Dan's info has been fantastic to follow.
BTW, I laughed at your username on a Mets thread. What else can you be at this point? Crushed and dejected?
affiliates not on the schedule this week but with the Mets this bad, I highly recommend keeping an eye on the free MILB.TV schedule. They are offering more games this season than ever before.
The info that Eric, GF, and yourself give are invaluable. It'd be better put to use somewhere where it's consolidated. As you said before, this year is about the kids anyway. This can help us to focus more on them. A six-month long thread wouldn't have worked; however, a monthly thread can. It's less likely to get lost in the wash, so to speak.

Dan's a gem. We're fortunate to have him. Let him cook.
buzz around this kid (at least from the Mets). We shall see, the transition from DSL to FCL isn't always so smooth but I'd file this kids name away. Link - ( New Window )

With the FCL season starting a month earlier I wonder if we'll find out which guys are stateside soon. Hoping Rosa, Gutierrez, Larez (if suspension over) are here.

Larez has more time to serve and now Baptist may also be suspended. The aforementioned Cesar Rivera will be in the FCL, Jose Chirinos posted on instagram he's in Florida, so presumably he will be as well. Gutierrez is supposedly repeating the DSL (not official). Rosa is in St. Lucie right now so he's 100% playing for the FCL team.
don't personally believe the Mets will trade Alonso. Rental players only bring back so much nowadays and the impact on the fan base/reaction would likely be weighed against the fact "worst case" they would get a pick for him if he left via FA (which I also don't expect to happen). I think they keep Alonso long term ala Nimmo. There is a valid argument for trading him, I just don't expect it.

Yes. I do believe it's part of the Alonso valuation including recent comments from Cohen.
@mets have $6,261,600 in IFA money for the upcoming IFA period that opens 1/15/2025 and runs through 12/15/2025. 14 teams have more, 11 teams have the same pool #Mets

Good stuff thanks. Guessing Yovanny Rodriguez will split time at C.

Agreed with this. And re the other comment of the Mets needing frontline pitching, yes they do. They aren't getting it for a deadline acquistion of Alonso, however.
as you know, they have 2 DSL teams so if Yovanny doesn't skip the DSL, they will likely just put Rodriguez/Gutierrez on 2 different teams. Gutierrez is glove first so if he's not a catcher he's probably not going to be a big leaguer. They have already placed a few players on DSL rosters already. I'm curious to see how Bohan Adderley does, big time pure athlete, the kind they haven't really had major success developing in recent years.
way I'd sign Alonso long-term with the team in this condition.
it makes zero sense.
the Mets are not a player away (or three players away).
And it's not that Alonso isn't a good player he is, but he's not what the Mets need to win. I don't even see him moving the needle which is probably why despite the power, he has relatively low fWAR every year (relative to what you'd expect for a consistent 40+ HR guy).
Alvarez is the only player I'd sign to a long-term contract not already on one.
He seems like future captain material. Just from the past year he seems like he can be a Pudge Rodriguez type.
unfortunately teams have wisened up when it comes to deadline deals. Teams aren't trading high end SP or high end SP prospects for rentals. Now of course, you can get lucky and trade for a "lesser" name and have the guy develop but the Beltran/Wheeler era is really a thing of the past.
i do think this core is very much auditioning for their futures here, and i dont think it's simply individual stats. it's playing the kind of fundamentally sound winning baseball stearns wants.
this core group has had 3 years of letdowns. if they dont show that they can play winning baseball here I think 1 or more may be the guys cohen eats money to move this summer if the right deals are out there. nimmo and lindor are under contract a long time so that may not be logistically feasible and you would think they fit what stearns wants but who knows. if things are bad enough he may want to start as fresh as possible.
worse today than the Megill, Severino, Lucchesi types? He's already 24 years old and Mets would save a year of service time in 9 days.
If it's going to be a transition year, then they probably shouldve be giving more playing time to guys like Scott and Vientos rather than washed up dudes like Stewart and Wendle IMO. Seems like this would've been a perfect opportunity to give Vientos some regular DH ABs before JDM was ready.

when pitchers come up is less urgent than position players. last year was his max innings thrown at 87. before that his max was 58. i would guess he's capped below 150 innings this year. there will be injuries or non-performers so he will have a spot whenever he's ready and there will probably be more than enough time left in the season to max out however many innings he has at big league level.
Innings limit should be interesting. He only has something like 50 career innings pitched over 3 NCAA seasons. I can’t see them allowing him to throw more than 80 or so innings but we shall see
for the praise guys. I'm just oddly obsessed with minutiae sometimes, it helps in cases like this, less so in other areas of life haha
I worked with a guy like that (a Brit named Kev). You remind me of him. Minutiae was his thing. He was the most helpful guy on our teaching staff IMO because of it.
like Daviel Hurtado will skip the DSL. The Mets signed him out of Cuba last season but he didn't pitch due to injury (never announced what), in fact both of their top IFA arms missed 2023 due to injury (Hurtado and Wilmer Lugo). Hurtado got a relatively large bonus for an IFA pitcher (640,000).
And they should also work hard to dump off McNeil and the expiring pitchers if they can hold up. I’d personally also trade Diaz this year or next. I think the economics and return improve next year though with a clear bill of health and good repertoire.
Fans aren’t coming to ballpark or buying Alonso jerseys if the Mets are a below average team next couple seasons. Cohen needs to let Stearns run this ship ruthlessly.
I understand that this rarely happens but the Mets would
be uniquely situated to trade Alonso at the deadline and then try and sign him back. It's highly unlikely Alonso extends with whatever team "rents" him given his agent and I'd find it highly unlikely that he'd rule out the Mets from bidding on him just because they traded him to a contender in a year when the team was bad. Alonso might even be appreciative of such a trade since it would take the qualifying offer out of the mix and probably help him a bit in FA.
The real issue would be the return. Even in a lost year, season ticket holders and attendance does matter. Someone needs to offer something that significantly better than a comp pick.

Yariel Rodríguez had a great debut in Triple-A Buffalo today:
Matt Rudick is going to be 26 in July and posted a 143 wRC+ with @RumblePoniesBB over 61 games prior to his shoulder injury. Hopefully, his time this season in AA is short lived #Mets

This will be a great way to keep track of how the kids are doing. May be the only joy we get this year.
It's all we've got to look forward to. I can't believe we've got to watch one of Zack Short, Joey Wendle, or Tyrone Taylor in the srting lineup for the foreseeable future.
Now that’s the entirety of the promoted DSL to FCL players. Unclear what this means for Jeremy Rodriguez who is currently at the facility. Either he’s shockingly skipping the FCL or he’s just not being included because he’s already stateside
Yovanny Rodriguez on Orange and Gutierrez on Blue. Yovanny could be a top 10 prospect in this system with a big year. Probably not that high but that kind of talent.

If Mets are doing awful close to trade deadline I’m thinking Stearns trades Pete
Not that I’m hoping but with Boras as agent he might be asking way to much
Plus we have a huge need for some front line pitching
Let me know your thoughts
Thx

I'd support this. Could always sign him back as a FA. I'm kind of with PJ on Alonso though. I'm not sure how well he is going to age.
