Wasn’t there some controversy with Leiter around how fast his pitches were reported at?

He had been lights out in AAA in limited action this year. Texas and him have to be pretty disappointed with how it went today.

Spin more than velocity. The Vanderbilt TrackMan was not calibrated properly (it's more than rumored that they did this on purpose) high picks = more recruits wanting to join your program

as much fun as the other nights for sure, but Hudepohl is interesting, Stuart should be a big leaguer (back end or multi-inning RP) he's a top 20ish prospect in the system, the Mets are high on Hall (he's struggled so far)

DanMetroMan : 4/18/2024 7:01 pm : link
Very solid outing for Tyler Stuart- 5 innings 6 hits 2 runs 2 walks 4 k’s, Jett Williams has already been hit by *2* pitches, Rhylan Thomas on base twice 2B, BB, Schwartz 1-2 3B

Brandon Sproat
The former Florida Gator was a longtime target of the Mets. They drafted Sproat in back to back years, finally signing him last summer in the second round. Sproat was the starter for High-A Brooklyn at Jersey Shore on April 16. The opposing Jersey Shore lineup features Top 100 prospect Justin Crawford and two other Phillies Top 10 prospects.

Quick aside: Jersey Shore is one of the better broadcasts in the High-A South Atlantic league. The announcers made a point to confirm the velocity in the scorebug is linked to Hawkeye.

Sproat went four innings and allowed just two well-hit balls all night. The righthander mixed two fastballs shapes in a four-seam and two-seam at 94-96 mph touching 99 mph at peak. The two-seam averaged 10 inches of IVB with 14 inches of horizontal break and looked like the better of the two shapes. Sproat commanded the two fastballs effectively and showed the ability to use them in tandem.

Sproat mixed a trio of breaking ball shapes throughout in a high-80s cutter, low-80s curveball and a mid-80s slurvy slider. The hard cutter was his primary secondary and he used it effectively as a change of pace off the fastballs. His curveball was a chase pitch, but Jersey Shore hitters weren’t fooled. It drove zero swings and misses across six pitches.

While Sproat’s stuff is solid, he struggled to find a putaway pitch. He generated nine swinging strikes and seven were against fastballs. His struggles to land the curveball this day likely contributed to some of that. He wasn’t really challenging hitters to chase it. Sproat did show the ability to attack both sides of the plate with his fastball. He was still effective with the pitch even after his velocity dropped down in the fourth inning.

Sproat gave up a home run to the first batter of the fourth after he hung a breaking ball over the middle of the plate. Outside of that, Sproat made few mistakes throughout the outing. He did make an errant throw to first on a pickoff move. Sproat showed the ability to consistently get into two-strike counts, hinting that when his curveball is on he’s capable of racking up the strikeouts. His pitchability showed throughout this outing. It was clear, though, his stuff starts to wane the second time through the order.

Christian Scott
Scott, the Mets’ No. 6 prospect, is generating a fair amount of buzz among Mets fans. He faced Charlotte, the White Sox Triple-A Affiliate, on Tuesday night, striking out seven batters while allowing two earned runs over 5.1 innings. The Knights’ home ballpark in downtown is one of the more beautiful backdrops of any park in baseball, but Charlotte is also incredibly home run happy. This park seemed like a fairly good test of Scott’s mettle. The automatic ball-strike system also called the game, making Scott’s margin for error smaller.

The first inning was tough. Scott struggled with fastball command, showing a control over command profile. He wasn’t missing the zone with the pitch, but wasn’t landing the pitch side-to-side or high enough for a chase swing above the zone (something he does well). He located a handful of fastballs well, particularly a high inside fastball to Colson Montgomery for a swinging strike three. However, he parked a few fastballs right down Main Street that Danny Mendick and Oscar Colas (two batters later) smashed for home runs.

Colson Montgomery is a top-10 prospect in baseball.

Christian Scott has struck him out swinging both times he's faced him tonight. pic.twitter.com/yoS9P2oa5B

— Syracuse Mets (@SyracuseMets) April 16, 2024
Scott settled in as he navigated the bottom of the Knights order and the second time through the lineup. Scott showed two slider shapes in a hard gyro slider at 86-87 mph and a sweeper at 82-84 mph. He started to really mix up his sequencing, starting six of the next 10 batters with a non-fastball. He retired 12 of the next 13 batters he faced, striking out six.

There’s a difference between getting outs at Triple-A and success in the majors. Scott shows several good traits. He has a feel for a pair of breaking balls and a changeup. He isn’t afraid to mix up his sequencing. Scott will mix in right-right changeups and will show both slider shapes to lefthanded hitters in addition to the changeup.

Scott’s future performance is dictated by how well he locates his fastball up in the zone, and to both sides of the plate. When he lands his fastball early in counts, he has a variety of pitches to get hitters out. He’s an efficient strike-thrower with fastball velocity, some deceptive release traits from his low three quarters slot and feel for a trio of secondaries.

Jimmy Loper should be in Brooklyn. He’s 24 years old. 49.2 pro innings 64 k’s, sub-3 FIP… hate to potentially jinx the guy but *0* career HR’s allowed. Jose Ramirez is a potential future HOFer so I’m not making a direct comparison but Jesus Baez has some similarities 👀👀👀. 2 more times on base today, + his 4th steal, Houck 1-2 3B, 2 BB, error, Suero 1-4 . power rankings @mets
come in at #8

Bowden names his early candidates for comeback player of the year and Marte makes it
https://t.co/w4odm9JdLv

One note on Marte-Marte's wRC+ is up to 119 (not quite 2022 Marte 134, but far better than any reasonable person could have expected). Defensive numbers are crushing his fWAR (0.2 fWAR) tied with McNeil and Bader tied for 5th amongst @Mets
position players

Very slow start for Matt Rudick. Especially alarming is his 34% K%. Considering he only stuck out 15.8% in AA last season, one has to wonder if his shoulder is still bothering him or not yet 100%

Who doesn't like some too early for them to matter trends/numbers? Jose Peroza leads the system in wRC+ (176) Mark Vientos #2 (162) followed by Chris Suero (147)

Jack Wenninger li.kely isn't long for @stluciemets
. The 22 year old 2023 6th rd pick has stuck out 18 over 12 innings while posting a 2.92 FIP. Not a ton to be learned about Wenninger in the FSL. I imagine he (along with Morabito) are among the first to head to @BKCyclones

After another dominant outing, Mets RHP Jonah Tong moves into second spot among pitchers in Low-A, just behind Rays prospect Santiago Suarez. Under the hood, Tong’s four-seamer, slider, and curveball all grade out better than average on our internal Stuff+ model.

I should note that Tong is actually tied in second spot with Phillies RHP George Klassen, who put up another dominant start before being transferred to the Development List—a likely prelude to a promotion to High-A. Facing more college-pitcher-appropriate hitters will be a great test for Klassen, but his five-pitch mix all grade better than average by their metrics and not just based on his results. I expect his impressive start to continue once on the Jersey Shore (where I suspect the batters will be Down To Flail at his arsenal).

Megill threw a bullpen on 4/19 (I did indeed miss that). We should hear Senga throwing live BP soon (especially if he's indeed going to be back when he's eligible. Figure 4-5 rehab starts.

i would guess they put him in AAA rotation and he/scott are basically fighting to be next guy up when they need a starter.

pretty amazing we are almost 1 month in without senga and with an injury to megill, and the 5th/8th SP on the preseason depth chart are both still pitching well enough to hold their spots.

houser has had 2 bad ones in a row but they were atlanta and lad. i think he gets at least 1 or 2 more starts before he gets bounced.

for Walker, if one wants to be positive, it could be a sign they do indeed expect Raley back in 15 days and don't want to make a 40 man move with Lavender. Lavender has also struggled a bit with his command so it could be that as well.

Hot sheet

9. Blade Tidwell, RHP, Mets

Team: Double-A Binghamton (Eastern)
Age: 22

Why He’s Here: 1-1, 3.00, 9 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 4 BB, 13 SO, 0 HR

The Scoop: Tidwell played to his strengths in a pair of home appearances at Double-A versus Reading last week. In both he piggybacked with a rehabbing Max Kranick. Tidwell struck out 13 of 35 batters faced, walked four and didn’t allow a home run. In his first appearance last week, Tidwell generated 14 whiffs on his way to 10 strikeouts. He has consistently shown swing-and-miss stuff since the Mets drafted him out of Tennessee in the second round in 2022. (ME)

Writer last week said he had Tidwell as the Mets #2 SP prospect (he admittedly saw Sproat as a RP) said his stuff is “outstanding” in short stints but more “solid/good” when asked to throw X pitches. Projects both he and Tong as RP long term and potentially good ones.
