McLean having a heck of a night too

Without looking it up I was surprised his era was so high, did I miss a start where he got rocked? I thought he was pitching well so far.

Awful outing last time out. 6 er

Nolan McLean with quite the bounce back performance so far. It’s the top of the 5th 5.0 innings 2 hits 0 runs 1 walk 6 k’s (1 HBP), 66 pitches through 5. He’s new to starting but I hope they let him go back out there for the 6th
Random thought today - should Mets have done Soto trade
Eric on Li : 4/23/2024 8:12 pm : link
I was an emphatic yes at the time and think I still am. I don’t remember what the exact comparable package was but probably something like:

Christian jones was probably the drew Thorpe.
Mets don’t really have a king - I think that piece would have been subbed to Gilbert.
Megill + drew smith + some other cringey arms they liked (butto?)

A lot for a rental but damn imagine Soto instead of marte hitting 2 or 3?

Christian Scott final line 6.1 innings 1 hit 2 runs 1 walk 8 k’s. Scott, McLean and Wenninger with outstanding outings tonight…

Unless I’m mistaken, @Jack_Wenninger becomes the *4th* @mets minor league pitcher to record double digit strikeouts in 2024… it’s not even May #Mets
Despite some injuries
bhill410 : 4/23/2024 9:15 pm : link
And some underwhelming starts here and there, the minors seem to have such a better vibe than this time last year when everyone was essentially playing poorly. Probably reflective of the increase in depth.

1 out, first and third and the Giants are bringing in their closer. He shouldn't be available for tomorrow so it would be extra sweet if they can tag him for a few runs here and tie the game/win!

Hey man. I've been pretty sick with pneumonia. Was too tired to do anything yesterday. Maybe today. Besides, the Mets have stunk up the joint the last three games. Would be nice of them to end this road trip today on a positive note before heading home tomorrow during their off day.

Barring injury we'll see him far sooner than that. If he's not here by the end of June I'd be surprised and that's being somewhat conservative

We thought position players would be strength this year but it's the opposite so far.

Also looks like we have a 50-60 pitch limit on the SPs at least for Brooklyn and St Lucie. Tidwell 62 last outing so maybe Bing as well. Scott 80 pitches last night. We'll see if that increases as year moves on.

They are really going to keep Houser in the rotation and keep wasting Scott's innings in AAA?

If they finish 84-78 and miss the playoffs by two games, remember these games where Houser or Luccchesi get completely shelled.

if he's giving up HR's early in AAA games he will get killed in the big leauges. Let him work through that first.
Scott
GF1080 : 4/24/2024 12:30 pm : link
Has a 4.76 FIP. His Numbers are a bit whacky all over the place. The amount of HRs, 100% LOB rate, low BABIP, etc.

curious with Scott's HR issue. A lot of them seem to be solo HRs. I wonder if it is just a result of being a bit too aggressive around the strike zone when he's not in trouble or something. I'd be interested in more information on that issue.

maybe getting soto paid gets him back on track, but i think it's a real question whether or not boras will ever bounce back from this debacle.

JDM ends up taking a paycut off big year.
Montgomery fires him.
Snell hurt now.
Bellinger & Chapman got less than expected and who knows if they play well enough to even opt out.

if I were Alonso, I'd be seriously considering my representation heading into next year.

like Yamamoto/Ohtani, Soto will have a bidding war no matter who reps him. Will Alonso? Will he have a hot market like Nimmo or end up like the list above and Conforto?

Scout told DiComo he felt Scott's in-the zone command could still use some work.

DanMetroMan : 4/24/2024 3:31 pm : link
"well known" I'm a huge Scott fan but looking deeper into his 2024 numbers you see reasons to understand why the Mets aren't ready to call him up. .152 BABIP, 100% LOB and of course the 6 homers allowed. It's no crime for him to not be a finished product, he's a converted RPer who was drafted after throwing *121* total career innings over 3 seasons with the Gators and had less than 100 professional innings coming into last season.

You would think this would mean keeping Stewart.

"Martinez, 36, won’t be a literal everyday player, at least not immediately. His monthlong ramp-up lasted that long because of a bout of lower back tightness, a problem that has plagued him for years. He and the Mets agreed to a one-year, $12 million contract on March 21, a week before the season began.

Between Martinez’s physical condition and his personalized, abbreviated spring training, Mendoza doesn’t want to ask him for too much too soon.

“This is something that I’ll have a conversation with him [about], but out of the gate, I’m not going to run this guy and DH him every day,” Mendoza said. “He’s going to need some days. It’s one of those where I’ll sit down with him and put together a game plan here. It’s important. He’s too valuable for this team. We gotta take care of him.”"

seems like a very odd call up? is it due to an injury and he's next up?

currently slashing .203/.241/.392 at AAA wit ha 29% k-rate and 3.6% walk rate. 54 rc.

his k-rate was an issue last year too:

Nae's assessment of Pete Crow-Armstrong is very fair
PCA is an elite defender, but has some very apparent offensive flaws. In his stint in AAA, he showcased very poor swing decisions with a 6th Percentile O-Swing%. He also lacks power, sitting at league average 90th percentile EV

Thomas Nestico
@TJStats
Another add on, Pete-Crow Armstrong struggled with swings and misses the entire season.

In all 3 levels he played in (AA, AAA, MLB) his Whiff% was greater than 30%.

makes sense. i dont hate it, maybe gives him a chance to break out of whatever funk it seems like he's in and likely knows it's just a cup of coffee. hopefully a learning experience he can bring down to AAA and use to develop. im sure the defense will be great if nothing else.
I understand that Scott has given up some dingers
Metnut : 4/24/2024 4:37 pm : link
but I really doubt anyone here really believes the Mets have 5 pitchers better than Christian Scott right now. He's an obvious great candidate to outperform his FIP (HRA rate can sometimes be fluky in short samples, while K/BB is much stickier faster) given that his XFIP is only 2.76 per fangraphs.

He has a 34:4 K/BB ratio so far this year. Really don't see a good argument to continue to start Houser over him. He turns 25 in a couple months. Enough already. Call him up.

The Mets themselves have said they don't think he's ready. They haven't developed a single SP even as good as Adrian Houser since who... Matz? So Gotta defer to Stearns who was with Milwaukee for Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, and out of the Hader, Devin Williams

Hefner
"“If he could add those [other] pitches, then he turns into a starter and potentially a frontline starter,” Mets pitching coach Jeremy Hefner said. “If he doesn’t, then he’s still a good Major League pitcher. That’s a credit to him and his work ethic and all the guys who have worked with him. His fastball’s special, and it’s a Major League fastball. So if he can generally command the other pitches and keep them off balance just enough, he’ll be in a good place.”

One is the fact that he isn’t a finished product; if there’s a knock on Scott, it’s that he’s been homer-prone this season, allowing five in three starts -- something his Triple-A manager attributes to the right-hander’s fly-ball tendencies and a bit of bad luck. A rival scout who recently saw Scott said that while his control is excellent, his in-zone command -- Scott’s ability to place pitches exactly where he wants within the strike zone -- could still use refinement.

Then there is the matter of workload. As a reliever at Florida, Scott never threw more than 54 innings in a college season. His career high as a professional was 87 2/3 last year. The Mets don’t have a hard ceiling for Scott this season, but they plan on monitoring him closely -- something more easily done in the Minor Leagues than the Majors.

Not
DanMetroMan : 4/24/2024 4:50 pm : link
really sure how relevant his age is to be honest. If he were 22 but started 3 years at say LSU and then was drafted last season and dominated, wouldn't this hypothetical pitcher likely be "more ready" than a guy who is 24 but with limited innings under his belt? His "advanced" age may limit how much additional velocity he could gain (likely none) but not sure how much it should matter when judging how "ready" he is. His BABIP is the lowest in the entire IL at .152 (only 12 other pitchers are even under .300), only 1 P has a higher HR/9 and his FIP is 18th in the league.

His innings cap is probably around 120 innings, so waiting a month or so and calling him up and having him potentially be available all season sounds better than the Miami plan where they sent down Perez (and now Meyer). Don't think Mets fans have the stomach (nor the bullpen capable of handling) too many 59 pitch outings (Jared Jones).

Scott
DanMetroMan : 4/24/2024 4:53 pm : link
remains a work in progress and that's okay. 2023 he pitched 6 innings or more innings 7 times/19 starts. He'll be here soon enough (likely by the time June has concluded).

Vargas ever come back? I missed the weekend box scores.

Metnut : 4/24/2024 5:02 pm : link
If anything it's an argument to call him up now right? Would you rather those limited innings be at AAA or for the Mets where he can actually help? The AAA innings count toward the limit anyway.

Sure, we can just defer to Stearns but then that would shut down all discussion here.

Even if he's not a "finished product" surely he can keep on developing at the MLB level? Don't most SPs have to do that anyway? Seems like it's just delaying the inevitable keeping him at AAA. An organization's best coaches are on the MLB team, so I find it a stretch to suggest that somehow he's going to get worse coaching with the Mets and working directly with Hefner.

BTW, Houser's XFIP is 5.95 and he's striking out less than 5.6 per 9 and his BB/9 is over 6. Awful. The wild card race is going to be extremely tight and that's not gonna cut it. I'm pretty confident Scott would be better right now.

Anyways, Dan you're a great Mets poster on this site and I'm grateful for all you do here throughout the years. Please please don't take these posts as me coming at you, it's just airing my thoughts and venting a bit. I do see where you're coming from on the other side (posting the Hefner quotes) even if I don't agree. I'll let you have the last word on this if you want. LGM.
