Sy'56's 2024 NFL Rookie Evaluations Organized and a Bonus

robbieballs2003 : 4/3/2024 10:05 pm
First off, a huge thank you, again, to Sy'56 for his contributions and permission for this spreadsheet/webpage.

Normally I wait until after all of Sy's threads before posting this. I don't want to steal away from his threads. However, I talked with Eric and we'll try it now. I know posters are always asking for this as Sy is still putting out his threads. We figured we'll try it this way this year.

I have taken all of his information that he has posted to BBI and combined it all into a spreadsheet/webpage.

I have created tabs for:

-Grading Scale: Sy's grading scale with a link to Ourlads

-Rows (Grade): Lists all players in a grid/row based on position/grade to help get a better understanding of where the strength lies in this draft. This also totals up the number of players with 1st round grades, 2nd round grades, etc. Players will be crossed out in real-time (hopefully).

-Rows (Team): Lists all players in a grid/row based on position/team to help get a better understanding of how teams are distributing their picks. This is also a great way to compare and analyze the players drafted from one team to another, particularly within the same division.

-Teams Summary: This organizes all the picks in the draft by each team just based on the round the players were drafted.

-Best Remaining: A list of the top-rated players available during the draft by grade with Sy's evaluations.

-Best Remaining (No Notes): This is the same as the Best Remaining tab but minus the evaluations for a quicker, easier glance at the players.

-Drafted: A list of all players that were drafted by pick (ascending)

-Latest Picks: A list of all players drafted by pick (descending)

-All: A list of all players with Sy's evaluations (drafted players will have a strikethrough)

-All (No Notes): The same as the All tab minus the evaluations for a quicker, easier glance at the players. (drafted players will have a strikethrough)

-Measurables: This is an imported list of players from Pro-Football-Reference that lists players' names, positions, schools, heights, weights, 40 times, verticals, number of bench presses, broad jumps, 3-cone times, and shuttle times. This year I think it just lists the combine results, not the pro-day results but I could be wrong.

-There are tabs per position group: All positions will have all players that were graded (drafted players will have a strikethrough)

-There are tabs per team: This will list all players drafted by that particular team

Some additional notes:

I published the spreadsheet on Google. Google Sheets limits the number of people on the spreadsheet to 100 people. This allows for an unlimited number of people to see it. It updates about every 5 minutes. You may have to hit refresh on the page to make sure it is as up-to-date as possible. But when you click on the link or refresh the page it takes like 10 seconds to load the page.

I may need someone to help update this spreadsheet during the draft. I am not sure of my availability this year. Thanks for all that offer.

What I ask of each of you:

If you are going to use the historical spreadsheet, please look through the tabs at the bottom. If you click on one and see someone else using it (a cell somewhere will have a colored border around it), then move on to another tab. Remember, if you make a change, it will change it for every user. The way around this is to create multiple tabs so users can have their own space. Please be mindful of the other users.

On the checkboxes, please just click on it to either add the checkmark or remove it. Do not hit delete as that will delete the checkbox. I have gone over this in my head a few times as part of the brainstorming. Checkboxes are easier but dropdowns are more effective. I would have used a dropdown but they take up more space and aren't as user-friendly as a checkbox. I don't want to have to maintain these pages, so please leave them as they are. If you make a mistake, just hit the undo button to bring it to what it was. Thank you.

Some downsides of this:

It loads a little slow. It may take around 20 seconds to make the changes you want but when I first created it, it was taking about 5 minutes so I think I have it where I want it. Also, this is for one tab. I have not tested it out with multiple tabs yet, which means it could be slower.

I don't have all the data I would like as it is already too slow. In the future, I am hoping to be able to add some more statistical data to it but we will see. Time is a big issue as well.

It’s stuff like this that makes this site
colin : 4/4/2024 6:13 pm : link
So cool to be a part of. Interesting reading the historical ratings. I want to be clear, I have nothing but respect and gratitude for Sy and everything he contributes to this site, I’ve learned a ton from him, and I’m not delusional enough to think I could do his job, but those 2017 and 2018 QB draft classes seemed to give everyone fits.

What I find most interesting - Sy seemed to love Mahomes, and had glowing things to say about both Allen and Lamar, but graded them all the lowest out of their respective classes amongst first round talent. And hindsight is 20/20, but at the time, all 3 were significantly more raw than their respective classmates, excluding maybe Darnold.

The common thread with all 3? They’re all extremely talented, specifically, arm talent, and ended up with top tier coaching. Being that Daboll is here now, it should strengthen the belief in taking a QB that he believes he can work with should be the #1 priority. It’s also why I think it’s Maye or bust for this staff.

Obviously this is conjecture on my part, but I have to believe the Giants have something in place with the Patriots and Cards for draft day; if the Commanders take Daniels, Giants have framework to get up to 3 for Maye, NE either moving to 6 and hoping JJM falls or jumping up to 4 to prevent the Vikes taking him, and holding onto an extra pick or 2 from the Giants. If Washington somehow takes JJM, Pats stay put and take Daniels, Giants hop to 4 for Maye. It gets interesting if Maye goes in one of those 3 picks though, which may mean getting a top WR and Penix v JJM. JJM just doesn’t seem to fit what Daboll has done with Allen, but I don’t know shit. I also question his arm strength/throwing motion, so maybe I just don’t like him as a prospect.

But robbie, thanks for putting this together, and Sy, thank you for all that you do for us readers of BBI. The last thing I’ll point out is this quote on Watson that made me laugh out loud:
Quote:
…I’ve since stepped away from that, as I don’t think he is a 1st round caliber guy. There are too many holes in his game, too many red flags. One thing you know you are getting here though…he’s as good a kid as you are going to find.

Oof, great scout, judge of character, however… hahaha. Sorry for the ribbing.

Definitely was just poking fun. And I’d bet there’s a bit of being moved away from his support system that adds to it too. Good natured kid gets a lot of success, money, and freedom, all at once = recipe for pushing limits. And with fame, those limits are much further than regular folks like me have.

For the last few years, I wasn't always around to update the sheet but had others volunteer their time to do it, even Dave, so they get credit too. This year I think I am good to have all the picks entered in real time. My kids have sports Thursday, Friday, and Saturday during the draft days but luckily they all end right before the start of the draft each day.
I'll update the DTs tonight.

I will be pissed if they pass on Odunze, if he were the last of the big 3 WRs standing. The latest rumors/asshat direction has them trading down in this scenario (only 3 QBs taken).

With the Seattle pick at #47, that is a valuable asset to use or trade.

If you go to the Rows tab, it is calculated. Yes, there are 41 first round graded players. I have to look at previous year but from my memory I don't remember any year having that high of a number.

It is tike consuming but I got it to a point where it takes me about 20 minutes to enter in each position group. The draft itself will be challenging on day 3 but other than that it isn't crazy. The hard part was initially creating it. It is all formulas. I didn't get a chance to update the historical page but hopefully sometime by the end of Tuesday.

I just updated the Historical Spreadsheet. Just a reminder below.

Thank you.

I totally appreciated your spread sheet this year. I especially liked and used the ROWS:(Grade) tab to follow the first 3 rounds. No feedback really as there were alot of buttons I could have pushed, but always came back to the Grade tab. I had to make some text size adjustments before printing for old man eyesight.

Thanks again because I can guess how much time this took to put together.

Oh, one feedback for next year, need an asterisk next to "30 visit" picks.
Thank you.

I don't know if I'll add a top 30 visit asterisk but I appreciate the feedback.

As far as the spreadsheet goes, I agree with the rows tab. That is the one I always use too. I use the other ones after the fact but that is the go to one.

I am going out to a 40th birthday party tonight so I am not sure if I will be able to finish before I leave. If not, I will get it done when I get home. Also, once that is done, I will also bring over the grades to the historical spreadsheet as well.
